Marjorie Taylor Greene Builds Enormous War Chest

April 7, 2021 at 9:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) “raised over $3.2 million in the first three months of this year,” Politico reports.

“That eye-popping haul came from over 100,000 individual donors, for an average donation of $32. Greene did not self-fund this quarter… That is a staggering sum of money for a House member, especially for a freshman who is more than a year out from her next election.”

“For context, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), then a freshman, raked in $728,000 in the first quarter of 2019.”

The downside for Democrats of removing Greene from her committee assignments is that she’s got nothing else to do but raise money.

Trump Endorses Mo Brooks for Senate

April 7, 2021 at 9:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former President Donald Trump is endorsing Rep. Mo Brooks in the Alabama Senate race, a nod that could dramatically reshape next year’s GOP primary for the state’s open seat,” Politico reports.

“In a state where Trump received more than 60 percent of the vote, his endorsement was widely sought after. Brooks and his rival, businesswoman Lynda Blanchard, had aggressively lobbied for the former president’s backing.”

Why Don’t Republicans Attack Kamala Harris?

April 7, 2021 at 7:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “But the first woman to be vice president, the first Asian American vice president, the first Black vice president … if someone had told you two years ago that any of those would be the case, wouldn’t you have expected a lot of ugly reactions? Or at the very least, a solid focus by Fox News and other Republican-aligned media outlets on how terrible she was, even if they avoided saying anything explicitly bigoted?”

“Yet Republicans seem far more interested in demonizing Coca-Cola and Major League Baseball these days than they are in bashing the vice president. They didn’t even bother to make the case that she was under-qualified during the campaign, even though she was only in her fourth year in the Senate. Surely that would’ve been an easy line of attack. Surely, you’d think, the audience for Republican-aligned media would be interested?”

Mike Pence Gears Up for 2024

April 7, 2021 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Mike Pence launched Advancing American Freedom, a policy and advocacy organization “to promote the pro-freedom policies of the last four years,” Axios reports.

The organization has an advisory board of prominent Republicans, presumably ones who don’t want to hang him.

Boehner Says Trump Incited ‘That Bloody Insurrection’

April 7, 2021 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) continued his attacks on the Republican Party in a New York Times book excerpt, accusing former President Trump of inciting “that bloody insurrection for nothing more than selfish reasons.”

Writes Boehner: “I’ll admit I wasn’t prepared for what came after the election — Trump refusing to accept the results and stoking the flames of conspiracy that turned into violence in the seat of our democracy, the building over which I once presided.”

He added: “Watching it was scary, and sad. It should have been a wake-up call for a return to Republican sanity… Whatever they end up doing, or not doing, none of it will compare to one of the lowest points of American democracy that we lived through in January 2021.”

Kamala Harris Finally Moves In

April 7, 2021 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Number One Observatory Circle is finally ready for its newest resident. After months spent living in temporary quarters at Blair House, Vice President Kamala Harris moved into her 33-room official residence on Tuesday evening following the completion of renovations.”

Biden’s Plan to Cement a Governing Majority

April 7, 2021 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Joe Biden’s sprawling infrastructure plan doesn’t just attempt to turn decades-old progressive policy pursuits into law. Aides and operatives inside and out of the White House are coming to view it as an ambitious political play to cement, and even expand, the coalition of voters that delivered Democrats to power in November,” Politico reports.

State Department Backs Away from Olympic Boycott

April 7, 2021 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNBC: “The State Department denied Tuesday evening that it was considering a joint boycott alongside allies of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing.”

There’s currently very little upside, political or diplomatic, to boycotting the Olympics.

Democrats’ Control of the House Is Increasingly Fragile

April 7, 2021 at 6:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Magazine: “There are now five vacancies in the U.S. House of Representatives… So the 222-213 margin by which Democrats originally held the House after the 2020 elections is currently at 218-212, pending special elections in May (Louisiana and Texas), June (New Mexico), and November (Ohio), with Florida’s date not yet established. The Texas and New Mexico districts are somewhat competitive but lean Republican and Democratic, respectively. The rest are not competitive.”

“Assuming the May special elections go as expected and cancel one another out, between now and June, Pelosi can afford to lose only two Democratic votes and still enact legislation.”

If there’s anyone who can keep a slim Democratic majority unified it’s Nancy Pelosi.

Middle East Peace Will Have to Wait

April 7, 2021 at 6:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Unlike Barack Obama and Donald Trump, Biden hasn’t named a special envoy to focus on the Israeli-Palestinian portfolio. Unlike Bill Clinton, Biden has no plans for any sort of peace conference, or even a peace process, anytime soon. Biden’s closest antecedent may be George W. Bush, who initially resisted engaging with the issue — but eventually found he couldn’t ignore it.”

“Aside from taking a few small steps to reorient the U.S. position away from the heavily pro-Israel tilt it took under Trump — including restoring some modest aid to the Palestinians — Biden and his team are signaling that the conflict is simply not a priority.”

North Korea Claims It Has Stopped the Coronavirus

April 7, 2021 at 6:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

North Korea continues to claim a perfect record in keeping out the coronavirus in its latest report to the World Health Organization, the AP reports.

Senate Democrats Could Move 6 Bills Using Reconciliation

April 7, 2021 at 6:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough’s preliminary decision on using budget reconciliation opens the door to potentially giving Democrats the chance to move a total of six pieces of legislation with just 51 votes before the end of this Congress, CNN reports.

But MacDonough has not made her final rulings and Senate Democrats are still undecided on whether they’ll use the new flexibility.

Wall Street Journal: “But even if Democrats can employ the process more frequently, measures passed through reconciliation will still need to comply with a number of Senate rules, including that they have a direct impact on the budget.”

Feinstein Backs Bypassing Filibuster for Voting Rights

April 7, 2021 at 6:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A senior staffer to Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) told the Los Angeles Times the senator would support circumventing the long-standing filibuster rule to enact a voting rights bill with only 50 votes in the Senate.

Feinstein state director Jim Lazarus said she “believes that the leadership of the Senate will come up with a path that allows this bill to go forward” with 50 Democratic votes and she “will make this the No. 1 bill that has to get through over the next month or two.”

Trump Plummets on List of Billionaires

April 7, 2021 at 5:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former President Donald Trump dropped 298 spots in Forbes’ Billionaires list — from the 1,001st spot in 2020 to the 1,299th place in the publication’s annual list.

Trump is worth $2.4 billion by Forbes‘ estimates.

Share of Democrats in U.S. Spikes After Biden Win

April 7, 2021 at 5:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Gallup poll found that 49% of respondents consider themselves Democrats or leaning that way, while 40% consider themselves Republicans or lean that way — the largest gap in almost a decade.

Gallup said the jump comes mostly from Republicans leaving the party at the end of President Donald Trump’s tenure. Only 25% of U.S. adults firmly identify with the Republicans, down from 29% late last year.

Matt Gaetz Sought Blanket Pardon From Trump

April 6, 2021 at 10:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

During the final weeks of President Donald Trump’s administration, Rep. Matt Gaetz asked the White House for a blanket presidential pardon — a request that was ultimately not granted, the New York Times reports.

“Gaetz did not tell White House aides that he was under investigation for potential sex trafficking violations when he made the request. But top White House lawyers and officials viewed the request for a pre-emptive pardon as a nonstarter that would set a bad precedent.”

It’s totally normal to seek a blanket pardon if you haven’t done anything wrong.

States Want Some Pandemic Rules Made Permanent

April 6, 2021 at 7:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “Lawmakers in Texas and at least 19 other states that let bars and restaurants sell to-go cocktails during the pandemic are moving to make those allowances permanent. Many states that made it easier for healthcare providers to work across state lines are considering bills to indefinitely ease interstate licensing rules. Lawmakers in Washington are pushing for Medicare to extend its policy of reimbursing for certain telehealth visits. States also are trying to lock in pandemic rules that spawned new online services, from document notarization to marijuana sales.”

Atlanta Mayor Issues Order Against New Voting Law

April 6, 2021 at 6:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms (D) issued an Administrative Order directing the City’s Chief Equity Officer to implement a series of actions to diminish what her office called “new voting restrictions” imposed by the new Georgia voting law, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.

“Her office stated these actions will ensure every Atlanta resident can exercise their right to vote.”

“The order will enact efforts to develop a plan within the city’s authority to expand opportunity and access to the ballot box.”
