In the first week of his criminal trial, Donald Trump raised about $5.6 million online by warning his small dollar-donors that the “Deep State” was out to lock him up, The Bulwark reports.
Quote of the Day
“When you’ve been here as long as I have, you’ve had a few big moments. I don’t think I’ve ever had a bigger one than this in terms of the level of importance to our own country and to our place in the world.”
— Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), quoted by Politico, on Congress approving new aid to Ukraine.
Narrow House Majorities Are Here to Stay
Politico: “The number of truly competitive seats numbers is roughly 30, split about evenly between Democratic and Republican-held districts.”
Why Biden Isn’t Fretting Campus Turmoil
Playbook: “More broadly, the Biden political brain trust just isn’t stressing out about what’s roiling the groves of academe — viewing it as an obsession of a subset of the electorate and a phenomenon that’s drawn a disproportionate amount of media coverage to its actual political relevance.”
As one campaign official who works on youth engagement put it: “It’s not going to be for the vast majority of young voters the thing that’s going to determine whether they vote or how they vote.”
For instance, a new Harvard Youth poll found only 2% of respondents cited the “Israel/Palestine conflict” as their top concern.
Biden Makes It Easier for Flyers to Get Refunds
Politico: “Under the new rule, airlines can’t simply give the passengers a voucher for a future flight. The Transportation Department also issued a rule Wednesday intended to force airlines and third-party ticket bookers to disclose add-on fees for items such as checked bags.”
“It’s a significant advance for the administration’s tough-cop approach to the airline industry.”
Pentagon Readies New Aid for Ukraine
Reuters: “The aid package includes vehicles, Stinger air defense munitions, additional ammunition for high-mobility artillery rocket systems, 155 millimeter artillery ammunition, TOW and Javelin anti-tank munitions and other weapons that can immediately be put to use on the battlefield.”
Biden Gets Major Union Endorsement
“Joe Biden will land a major union endorsement Wednesday from North America’s Building Trades Unions, whose leaders say the president has his infrastructure bill largely to thank for it,” CNN reports.
“In making one of their earliest ever presidential endorsements, NABTU leaders are kickstarting an eight-figure organizing program to try to deliver their 250,000 members in the battlegrounds of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin for Biden.”
Secretive Conservative Donors Draw Up 2024 Plans
“Donald Trump spent last week stuck in New York City for the beginning of his hush money trial. But on Wednesday, between days in court, Trump made time to call into a secretive donor meeting back at his Mar-a-Lago club in Palm Beach, Florida,“ NBC News reports.
“The event was hosted by the Rockbridge Network, an under-the-radar, new-age conservative group that sees itself as the leading edge of a changing Republican Party — and is putting tens of millions of dollars into building a fresh infrastructure to support it.”
Tennessee House Passes Bill to Arm Teachers
“Tennessee House Republicans on Tuesday passed legislation to allow some trained teachers and school staff to carry handguns despite pleas from Democrats, students and gun-reform advocates to defeat the bill,” the Tennessean reports.
“The bill is all but guaranteed to become law within weeks, as Gov. Bill Lee can either sign it into law or allow it to become law without his signature. Lee has never vetoed a bill.”
Summer Lee Wins Democratic House Primary
“Rep. Summer Lee (D-PA), a first-term progressive Democrat, won her primary contest in western Pennsylvania on Tuesday, fending off a moderate challenger in a race that centered on her stance on the war in Gaza,” the New York Times reports.
“The primary, in Pennsylvania’s 12th District, presented one of this year’s first down-ballot tests of whether left-wing incumbents would be hurt by their opposition to Israel’s military campaign.”
NOTUS: Other progressives may use Summer Lee’s playbook.
Foreign Aid Passes In Bipartisan Senate Vote
The U.S. Senate overwhelmingly passed a $95 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, 79 to 18, sending it to President Biden’s desk, the New York Times reports.
“The vote reflected resounding bipartisan support for the measure, which passed the House on Saturday by lopsided margins after a tortured journey on Capitol Hill, where it was nearly derailed by right-wing resistance.”
“And it capped an extraordinary political saga that raised questions about whether the United States would continue to play a leading role in upholding the international order and projecting its values globally.”
Trump Says Roe’s Demise ‘Working Out Very Well’
“Donald Trump took his boast about overturning Roe v. Wade to a critical swing state Tuesday, even as he was stuck in court in New York City,” Los Angeles Magazine reports.
Said Trump: “When you look at it and you look at what’s happening all over the country now, states are voting. Ohio just voted. All different by the way. It’s tailor made, and it’s really working out well for people and they’re very, very happy.”
FBI Director Rejects Trump’s Vow to Probe Rivals
Reacting for the first time to Donald Trump’s vow to order the Justice Department to investigate his political opponents, FBI Director Christopher Wray said he would not allow his agents to conduct any investigation that doesn’t comply with “our rules, our procedures, our best practices, our core values,” NBC News reports.

Trump Fumes In Court as Biden Campaigns
Politico: “If the opening week of Trump’s hush-money trial laid bare the courtroom’s constraints on Trump, no single 24-hour stretch demonstrated the extreme asymmetry of the unfolding campaign more than Tuesday. There was Biden making campaign stops with fawning supporters of abortion rights in Tampa, Florida, while Trump was sitting in a “freezing” Manhattan courtroom, with barely any supporters in sight.”
Said Trump: “He’s out campaigning, and I’m here in the courtroom, sitting here, sitting up as straight as I can all day long.”
He added: “It’s a very unfair situation. We’re locked up in a courtroom, and this guy’s out there campaigning, if you call it campaigning.”

Former Rep. George Santos (R-NY) announced that he was suspending his independent House bid, just over a month after entering the race, The Hill reports.
Conservatives Continue Threats to Remove Mike Johnson
“Conservative rebels looking to oust Speaker Mike Johnson are continuing their threats despite former President Donald Trump’s words of support Monday,” Politico reports.
Said Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA): “It’s baffling hearing the establishment complain that it’s too much drama, too hard, and too risky to go through another Speaker race. Complete surrender is not acceptable and will not be tolerated.”
Said Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY): “We don’t expect to get everything, but we also won’t tolerate complete and total surrender.”
McConnell Blames Carlson, Trump for Ukraine Aid Delay
“Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell on Tuesday celebrated the impending passage of $60 billion in U.S. aid to Ukraine ahead of a final vote, while lamenting the fact that it took months to secure enough Republican support to land it,” NBC News reports.
Said McConnell: “The demonization of Ukraine began by Tucker Carlson, who in my opinion ended up where he should have been all along, which is interviewing Vladimir Putin. And so he had an enormous audience, which convinced a lot of rank and file Republicans that maybe this was a mistake.”
He added: “I think the former president had sort of mixed views… which requires you to deal with Democrats, and then a number of our members thought it wasn’t good enough. And then our nominee for president didn’t seem to want us to do anything at all. That took months to work our way through it.”
