Why Trump Backed Down on Foreign Student Visas

April 26, 2025 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“It took more than 100 lawsuits and 50 restraining orders from dozens of federal judges. But after 20 days of court losses, the Trump administration capitulated, reversing a decision that threatened the legal status of thousands of foreign students in the United States,” Politico reports.

“The Trump administration’s abrupt move tacitly acknowledged what judges in two dozen states had been saying since early April: Terminating university students’ immigration records from a federal database — a step which appeared to jeopardize their legal authorization to remain in the country — was almost certainly illegal. And it was implemented so ham-handedly that judges felt compelled to intervene.”

April 26, 2025 at 10:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, facing criticism of his stewardship at the Pentagon and beset by staff turnover, added a member of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to his circle of close advisers,” Bloomberg reports.

RFK Jr. Isn’t Staying In His Lane

April 26, 2025 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is fast becoming the most prominent face of the Trump administration’s domestic agenda, taking on a portfolio well beyond the role of a traditional Health secretary. And the White House is thrilled,” Politico reports.

“Senior aides believe Kennedy’s ‘Make America Healthy Again’ loyalists helped deliver the popular vote for President Donald Trump last November — and that keeping them in the GOP tent will be crucial to ensuring the party holds onto power come the midterms.”

Vatican Caves and Gives Trump Front-Row Seat

April 26, 2025 at 7:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump, wearing a blue suit in a sea of black, was seated in a prized front-row seat for the funeral of Pope Francis,” the Daily Beast reports.

“The seating location will likely be a source of great satisfaction for the famously thin-skinned president, who mercilessly mocked Joe Biden after he was seated in the 14th row at Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022.”

Cabinet Portrays a President That’s Always Winning

April 26, 2025 at 7:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “President Trump faces growing obstacles to his agenda from the courts, investors and world leaders. But on social media, his top officials are using their influence to tell Americans a different story, one in which Trump is securing victory after victory on his main goals. The strategy gives his cabinet the most robust public presence of any in recent memory.”

“Like figures in an action movie, they are constantly on-screen and in motion, using social-media platforms and friendly news outlets not only to amplify Trump’s political messages but also to create a more intimate connection with supporters. In the process, they share glimpses into the daily life of government officials whose predecessors most often remained remote and largely unknown.”

Yale Classmates Warn Scott Bessent

April 26, 2025 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A group of Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s classmates at Yale University urged him in a new letter to reconsider his role “in facilitating the Trump administration’s intended transformation” of the United States “into an authoritarian state,” CNBC reports.

Responded Bessent: “It is equal parts odd and sad that a group of people, most of whom I have never met, feel they have standing in my life choices due to a tenuous overlap from 40 years ago.”

He added: “How very brave of these people to wage their campaign from behind a keyboard rather than to engage in the real-life political process. They should look inward, exercise some agency, and come out from behind their desks—like I did—to get involved in the 2028 electoral cycle.”

Trump Calls for Russia-Ukraine Summit

April 26, 2025 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said on Truth Social that after a “good day in talks and meetings with Russia and Ukraine” they “are very close to a deal, and the two sides should now meet, at very high levels, to ‘finish it off.'”

He added: “Most of the major points are agreed to.”

New York Times: “President Trump met privately with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine on Saturday in Rome, the White House said, on the sidelines of the funeral service for Pope Francis.”

Video Casts Doubt on Ed Martin’s Apology

April 26, 2025 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Interim D.C. U.S. attorney Ed Martin apologized this week for praising a pardoned Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot defendant who supported Nazi ideology and photographed himself posing as Adolf Hitler, saying he didn’t know about the man’s extremist statements,” the Washington Post reports.

“But in videos and podcasts, Martin has defended the man since at least 2023, calling him a friend who was ‘slurred and smeared’ by antisemitism allegations.”

Federal Prosecutor Queries Leading Medical Journal

April 25, 2025 at 9:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal prosecutor in Washington has contacted The New England Journal of Medicine, considered the world’s most prestigious medical journal, with questions that suggested without evidence that it was biased against certain views and influenced by external pressures,” the New York Times reports.

“At least three other journals have received similar letters from Edward Martin Jr., a Republican activist serving as interim U.S. attorney in Washington. Mr. Martin has been criticized for using his office to target opponents of the administration.”

Two Year Old U.S. Citizen Deported

April 25, 2025 at 9:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge in Louisiana said he suspected the Trump administration had deported a 2-year-old U.S. citizen to Honduras earlier Friday despite a lawsuit intended to block the child’s removal,” the New York Times reports.

The ‘Never Surrender’ President Retreats

April 25, 2025 at 9:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Molly Ball: “Taken together, the reversals were a startling pattern for a president who prides himself on never backing down, potentially denting his political brand as an unflinching fighter. As the 100-day mark of Trump’s tumultuous second term draws near, the climbdowns were a signal that his ebbing popularity may be forcing him to moderate some of his lofty goals.”

“White House officials disputed the idea that Trump had reversed himself. Any reduction in the China tariffs would only come as part of a deal and wouldn’t be a unilateral move, an official argued, while Trump’s pressure on Powell never took the form of an explicit vow to fire him. The threat to walk away from the Ukraine talks was clearly a negotiating tactic, the official said, while DOGE’s work has had a meaningful impact and will continue with or without Musk’s involvement.”

Apple to Shift U.S.-Sold iPhone Assembly to India

April 25, 2025 at 8:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Apple plans to shift the assembly of all U.S.-sold iPhones to India as soon as next year, as President Donald Trump’s trade war forces the tech giant to pivot away from China,” the Financial Times reports.

Well, it looks like none of those jobs are coming to the U.S.

Susan Rice Says Pete Hegseth Is ‘Dumb as a Rock’

April 25, 2025 at 7:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former National Security Adviser Susan Rice bucked Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s intelligence following weeks of scrutiny over leaks at the Pentagon amid massive spending reductions at the Department of Defense, The Hill reports.

Said Rice: “Well, if you’re a white male Christian cisgender macho MAGA man, you can be as dumb as a rock and be deemed qualified to serve as secretary of Defense. That’s apparently what we’ve learned from this episode.”

April 25, 2025 at 7:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mills has not yet made a decision but could choose to launch a Senate bid as late as the end of this year and still have time to challenge the GOP incumbent.”
