Politico: “Donation pages for WinRed — the GOP’s online fundraising tool — that included the word ‘impeach’ or ‘impeachment’ raised 300 percent more than pages that did not.”

Doug Jones Will Vote to Convict Trump

February 5, 2020 at 11:03 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Doug Jones (D-AL), in a tough race for re-election, will vote to convict President Trump on both articles of impeachment.

Trump’s Best Week as President

February 5, 2020 at 11:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Josh Kraushaar: “The chaos of the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday night obscured an alarming reality for Democrats: President Trump now looks like a narrow favorite to win a second term in office.”

“The latest wave of national polls show Trump hitting or nearing all-time highs in his job-approval rating—even after weeks of impeachment proceedings. Gallup’s latest tracking survey showed his job-approval rating at 49 percent, tantalizingly close to an outright majority of the country. The president is delivering his State of the Union address amid a strong economy and growing consumer confidence. Nearly two-thirds of the country approve of his economic stewardship—the highest rating on this score in nearly two decades. Republicans look energized and united behind the president.”

“Meanwhile, Democrats face growing factional warfare between their progressive and pragmatic wings.”

Quote of the Day

February 5, 2020 at 10:41 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“He shredded the truth so I shredded his speech.”

— Speaker Nancy Pelosi, quoted by The Hill, in a meeting with House Democrats.

It’s Just Wednesday

February 5, 2020 at 10:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Here’s what we’ve seen so far this week:

  • The Iowa caucuses were a complete fiasco with the full results still not complete more than 36 hours later.
  • President Trump gave one of the most divisive State of the Union addresses in history, beginning with a refusal to shake Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s hand and ending with Pelosi ripping up his speech.
  • The Senate will later today vote to acquit President Trump on impeachment charges, even though a majority of Americans think he should be removed from office.

It’s safe to say it’s going to be an insane year in politics.

Romney Watch

February 5, 2020 at 10:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Every Republican U.S. senator has now announced that they will vote against convicting President Trump, except for Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), who has not revealed his intentions either way, the Deseret News reports.

Romney is expected to give a floor speech just before the Senate reconvenes as a court.

And there are a few Democrats — Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia, Doug Jones of Alabama and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona — who hadn’t revealed their decisions either.

The final impeachment vote is expected around 4 p.m. ET.

Biden’s Campaign Is On Life Support

February 5, 2020 at 8:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sean Trende: “We shouldn’t mince words here: Biden had an awful night. Yes, Iowa is a heavily white state, and it is a caucus rather than a primary, so it didn’t play to his strengths. Nevertheless, Biden is a former vice president to a very popular ex-president. He has universal name recognition and the implicit backing of large swaths of the Democratic establishment.”

“Yes, he can still recover in South Carolina, although that is looking much less probable than it did Monday morning. If his African-American support remains solid, he will perform well in the South. But his weakness among Northern whites is a red flag for states where he will need to win — and where he can’t rely on African-American support to push him over the top. If he’s coming in fourth place in Iowa, delegate-rich states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio are likely to be challenging for him as well.”

“Looming over all of this is the question of money. All of the candidates spent heavily on Iowa, and Biden needs to replenish his coffers. Will donors stick with him through New Hampshire? Almost certainly. But how many underperformances can he turn in before they abandon him?”

Bloomberg Starts Drawing Big Crowds

February 5, 2020 at 8:07 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “In a sign of Mr. Bloomberg’s growing strength, he staged a rally in Philadelphia—about a mile from Mr. Biden’s campaign headquarters—that drew more than 2,000 people.”
