Officials Cringe as Trump Spills Classified Details

October 28, 2019 at 7:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “A ‘beautiful’ and ‘talented’ dog got injured. A robot had been on standby to aid in the hunt for al-Baghdadi if needed. U.S. Special Operations Forces arrived in eight helicopters and were on the ground for about two hours. They entered al-Baghdadi’s compound within seconds by blowing holes in the side of the wall. They chased al-Baghdadi into a web of underground tunnels — many of them dead ends — that they already knew existed. Before the U.S. forces left for the 70-minute, ‘very low and very, very fast’ helicopter ride back along the same route from which they arrived, they captured some of al-Baghdadi’s henchmen and seized ‘highly sensitive material and information’ outlining the origin of ISIS and plans for future plots.”

“A few of those colorful details were wrong. Many of the rest were either highly classified or tactically sensitive, and their disclosure by the president made intelligence and military officials cringe, according to current and former U.S. officials.”

Florida GOP Cancels Its Biggest Fundraiser

October 28, 2019 at 7:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Republican Party of Florida on Tuesday postponed its biggest annual fundraiser, a move that some officials blamed on lackluster interest from donors,” Politico reports.

“Planners were having difficulty selling table sponsorships to the Statesman’s Dinner, and money that Gov. Ron DeSantis pledged to raise for the event has yet to arrive. Event planners also couldn’t land a keynote speaker for the dinner, which was scheduled for Nov. 9 in Orlando.”

North Carolina Judges Order New Election Maps

October 28, 2019 at 7:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“North Carolina’s 2020 congressional elections must happen under new maps, a panel of judges ruled Monday evening, saying that the current Republican-drawn maps are unfair to many voters,” the Raleigh News and Observer reports.

“The legislature must now redraw the state’s 13 U.S. House districts. The judge — two Democrats and one Republican from different parts of North Carolina — wrote that the maps show signs of ‘extreme partisan gerrymandering’ which ‘is contrary to the fundamental right of North Carolina citizens to have elections conducted freely and honestly to ascertain, fairly and truthfully, the will of the people.'”

“Monday’s ruling, a preliminary injunction, said the state may not hold any elections for Congress using the current maps passed in 2016.”

October 28, 2019 at 7:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The country’s top military officer said on Monday that he does not know where President Trump got his information that Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the Islamic State leader, died ‘screaming, crying and whimpering,'” the New York Times reports.

“Gen. Mark Milley, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters at a Pentagon news conference that he does not have similar information, but said Mr. Trump may have gotten his details from a conversation with military personnel on the ground who were involved in the raid.”

Said Milley: “I know the president had planned to talk down to the unit and unit members. But I don’t know what the source of that was. I assume it was talking directly to unit and unit members.”

October 28, 2019 at 7:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“General Motors, Fiat Chrysler, Toyota and other auto giants said they were intervening on the side of the Trump administration on Monday in an escalating battle with California over fuel economy standards for automobiles,” the New York Times reports.

Tight Race for Louisiana Governor

October 28, 2019 at 5:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new JMC Analytics and Polling survey in Louisiana shows Gov. Jon Bel Edwards (D) leading Eddie Rispone (R) in the race for governor, 48% to 46% with 6% undecided.

Said pollster John Couvillon: “Given that the undecided percentage is down to 6% — 4% if ‘leaners’ are excluded — this is now an election where turnout matters a lot more than persuasion, particularly with early voting less than a week away.”

Collins Won’t Sign Resolution Condemning Impeachment

October 28, 2019 at 4:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME) “will not co-sponsor a Senate resolution that calls on Democrats to hold a vote to formalize their impeachment probe,” Politico reports.

“The measure, introduced by Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) last week, has support from 50 of the 53 Senate Republicans. It also asks that the House provide President Trump ‘due process’ and give House Republicans subpoena power.”

October 28, 2019 at 3:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Boris Johnson has lost his third bid for a general election, after Labour abstained and he failed to reach the two-thirds majority of MPs he needed for a poll,” The Guardian reports.

“The prime minister is now expected to back a Liberal Democrat plan to change the law in order to secure an early election, although the parties do not yet agree on a date.”

Public Impeachment Hearings Will Start Soon

October 28, 2019 at 3:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi put out a “Dear Colleague” letter outlining House Democrats’ next steps in the impeachment inquiry, including public hearings.

The White House has argued the inquiry was not valid without a vote and therefore did not have to comply with subpoenas. Although Pelosi writes that argument has no merit, Democrats will take a vote on Thursday that will formalize procedures for the next phase of the impeachment inquiry.

October 28, 2019 at 3:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The 2017 episode, never previously reported, came as the newly inaugurated U.S. president prepared to meet for the first time with Erdogan.”

White House Told in May of Concerns About Giuliani

October 28, 2019 at 2:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House was alerted as early as mid-May — earlier than previously known — that a budding pressure campaign by Rudy Giuliani and one of President Donald Trump’s ambassadors was rattling the new Ukrainian president,” NBC News reports.

“Alarm bells went off at the National Security Council when the White House’s top Europe official was told that Giuliani was pushing the incoming Ukrainian administration to shake up the leadership of state-owned energy giant Naftogaz… The official, Fiona Hill, learned then about the involvement of Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, two Giuliani associates who were helping with the Naftogaz pressure and also with trying to find dirt on Joe Biden’s son.”

“The revelation significantly moves up the timeline of when the White House learned that Trump’s allies had engaged with the incoming Ukrainian administration and were acting in ways that unnerved the Ukrainians — even before President Volodymyr Zelenskiy had been sworn in. Biden had entered the presidential race barely three weeks earlier.”

Ukrainian Oligarch Seethed About ‘Overlord’ Biden

October 28, 2019 at 2:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “Indicted Ukrainian gas oligarch Dmytro Firtash spent more than $1 million hiring key figures in Republican efforts to investigate the Biden family.”

“But the two men have a history. Two Ukrainian gas industry experts say the gas-market reforms pushed by Biden and others in 2014 and 2015 hit Firtash in the wallet, and badly. One knowledgeable outside observer estimated that the 2014 and 2015 gas reforms and legislation cost him hundreds of millions of dollars.”

Biden Gives His Best Interview Yet

October 28, 2019 at 2:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jennifer Rubin: “Joe Biden has had some ragged moments in the debate and offered some meandering sentences with enough hairpin turns to rattle the most confident staffers. However, in a 60 Minutes interview that aired Sunday night, he turned in his most impressive and presidential TV performance to date.”

Another House Republican Calls It Quits

October 28, 2019 at 1:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Greg Walden (R-OR), the top Republican on the powerful House Energy and Commerce Committee, will retire at the end of this Congress, Politico reports.

“The Oregon congressman is the 17 th House Republican to announce their retirement this cycle, a sign of how difficult it will be for the GOP to win back the majority in what’s already shaping up as a tough 2020 election.”

Dissent Erupts at Facebook Over Political Ads

October 28, 2019 at 1:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The letter was aimed at Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s chief executive, and his top lieutenants. It decried the social network’s recent decision to let politicians post any claims they wanted — even false ones — in ads on the site. It asked Facebook’s leaders to rethink the stance.”

“The message was written by Facebook’s own employees. For the past two weeks, the text has been publicly visible on Facebook Workplace, a software program that the Silicon Valley company uses to communicate internally. More than 250 employees have signed the letter.”
