Trump Suggests Whistleblower Committed Treason

September 26, 2019 at 1:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump expressed disgust with the explosive whistleblower complaint, slamming the intelligence officer and those White House aides who helped him or her as “almost a spy” and suggested it was treason, the Los Angeles Times reports.

Said Trump: “I want to know who’s the person who gave the whistle-blower the information because that’s close to a spy. You know what we used to do in the old days when we were smart with spies and treason, right? We used to handle it a little differently than we do now.”

Key Takeaways from the House Intelligence Hearing

September 26, 2019 at 12:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

For those who didn’t watch the three hour House intelligence committee hearing:

  1. Democrats harshly criticized acting DNI Joseph Maguire for his handling of the whistleblower complaint. While Maquire said he had genuine concerns over White House claims of executive privilege, Democrats said he broke the law by not bringing the complaint directly to congressional intelligence committees.
  2. Republicans spent little time defending Trump’s actions described in the whistleblower’s complaint. Instead, they pulled out their Russia investigation playbook and repeatedly called the controversy a “hoax” created by Democrats and the media.
  3. Democrats focused mainly on why they did not receive the complaint rather than its actual substance. It was a missed opportunity since the complaint is extraordinary.
  4. Maguire agreed the whistleblower did the right thing by filing a complaint and promised to allow him or her to testify before Congress with full legal protections.

This is just the beginning of a very interesting few months.

Trump’s Other Ukraine Problem

September 26, 2019 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Buried in the controversy over President Trump’s phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was an effort by the Ukrainian leader at currying favor with Trump through his business,” the Washington Post reports.

Said Zelensky: “Actually, last time I traveled to the United States, I stayed in New York near Central Park, and I stayed at the Trump Tower.”

“Zelensky’s comments mark the first known example of an interaction Democrats and government ethics experts warned about when Trump took office: that foreign leaders would try to influence Trump by spending money at his properties and telling him about it.”

GOP Governor Backs Impeachment Inquiry

September 26, 2019 at 12:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vermont Gov. Phil Scott (R) “has become the first Republican chief executive to support impeachment proceedings against President Trump,” the AP reports.

Giuliani Denies Charges In Whistleblower Complaint

September 26, 2019 at 12:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani told CNN he has “no knowledge of any of that crap” in the newly-released complaint from an American intelligence community whistleblower.

Asked about details from the complaint that multiple US officials were “deeply concerned” about his activities speaking with Ukrainian officials and nationals, Giuliani called the charge “total nonsense.”

Giuliani also claimed he had a “nice little trail” of text message conversations to prove his story.

Democratic Fundraising Spikes This Week

September 26, 2019 at 12:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The online ticker for ActBlue, the company that processes most online Democratic donations, showed that Tuesday was one of the bigger fund-raising days in recent months that was not linked to a Democratic debate or a monthly deadline. The site showed $4.6 million in donations on Tuesday, after $4.2 million on Monday.”

Lewandowski May Lead White House Impeachment Team

September 26, 2019 at 11:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Corey Lewandowski has had conversations with White House officials in recent days about potentially taking a position inside the administration to help Trump confront a looming impeachment fight, CNN reports.

“The discussions, including a Thursday afternoon meeting at the White House, reflect the growing recognition among Trump’s allies and advisers that he is without a clear strategy for managing the crisis, which exploded in stunning fashion this week.”

Coats Claims He Was Unaware of Whistleblower

September 26, 2019 at 11:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told the Indianapolis Star that he didn’t know about the whistleblower complaint saying President Trump made inappropriate demands of the Ukraine president.

Said Coats: “Nothing came to me. I left on Aug. 15… The very next day that was presented to Joe. I feel so bad for Joe. He is caught in a squeeze here and the lawyers are divided. So they are trying to work all that out. That’s about all I can say about that.”

Key Takeaway from the Whistleblower Complaint

When the readout of President Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president was finally released yesterday, it was jaw dropping. It was such a damning portrayal of the president’s actions that it was hard to understand why the White House finally relented and released it.

As many have commented, the readout showed Trump acting like a Mafia boss shaking someone down for a “favor.”

House Intelligence Committee chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) tweeted:

The transcript of the call reads like a classic mob shakedown: — We do a lot for Ukraine — There’s not much reciprocity — I have a favor to ask — Investigate my opponent — My people will be in touch — Nice country you got there. It would be a shame if something happened to her.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin apparently “vociferously argued” against releasing the readout of the phone call, while others convinced Trump that the document somehow vindicated him.

Now that the seven-page whistleblower’s complaint is declassified, it’s clear the White House is bitterly divided. Many around Trump are clearly unnerved by his actions — and talking about it — while others are apparently assisting in a concerted effort to cover up the president’s activities.

The whistleblower added that “more than half a dozen U.S. officials have informed me of various facts related to this effort.” All of these people are all potential witnesses in the House impeachment inquiry.

One thing is clear: Trump no longer knows who he can trust in the White House.

Trump In Denial About His Predicament

September 26, 2019 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Questionable rapid-pace decisions spurred by President Trump himself have left some allies wondering if there’s a cogent strategy in place to counter Democrats in the wake of the fast-moving impeachment inquiry,” CNN reports.

“Some people close to him believe the President is in denial about the gravity of his predicament.”

The Washington Post reports that at least two Cabinet officials advised against release the readout of Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president: Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who “vociferously argued against it.”

Maguire Walks a Tightrope

September 26, 2019 at 10:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Clare Malone: “A thing that we are seeing with the Maguire testimony is the tightrope walking he does to make sure he stays on the president’s good side in order to maintain his confidence — something Maguire explicitly says is necessary in order for him to maintain influence re: intelligence activities. We’re seeing the lengths that Maguire went to in order to make sure that he wasn’t getting on the wrong side of the White House.”

“Maguire continues to say that this complaint is ‘unprecedented,’ but I also wonder how he would act in the same situation with a president of a different personality. Would he have been less careful/parsing about his decision to submit a report to Congress? It’s an unknowable thing, but so much of this revolves around Trump’s personality and well-documented capriciousness, I think.”

Maguire Admits Whistleblower Did the Right Thing

September 26, 2019 at 10:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire is trying to avoid being political in this morning’s House Intelligence Committee hearing.

When asked by Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) whether he thought the whistleblower was a “political hack,” as President Trump asserted, Maguire said the person was “acting in good faith” and eventually told Schiff: “I think the whistleblower did the right thing.”

What an Inappropriate ‘Quid Pro Quo’ Looks Like

September 26, 2019 at 10:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was asked by the Boston Globe to describe what he thinks would be “an inappropriate quid pro quo scenario” in relation to President Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president.

Said Graham: “‘Uh, hey pal, you know, you need to like, go after the Bidens or I ain’t gonna give you any money.’ He’d be really, like, thuggish about it.”

House Intelligence Hearing on the Whistleblower

September 26, 2019 at 8:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joseph Maguire, the acting Director of National Intelligence, will testify in front of the House Intelligence Committee at 9 a.m. ET.

The whistleblower complaint has now been made public.

Playbook: “The Democrats’ goal is to understand what the White House and DOJ did to block Congress from getting the whistleblower’s complaint and IG report, and why. Was there a cover-up? Who ordered what, when, why and through what channels?”

The three major broadcast networks have switched to live coverage of the hearing, demonstrating the historic nature of this event.

Whistleblower Report Made Public

September 26, 2019 at 8:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The House Intelligence Committee on Wednesday released the whistleblower complaint at the heart of a controversy over President Trump’s efforts to have the government of Ukraine investigate Joe Biden and his son.

The complaint cites President Trump’s call with Ukraine’s president, efforts to hide the call records inside the White House, concerns about Rudy Giuliani from many U.S. officials and an abrupt stoppage of foreign aid, among other things.

Verbatim Transcript of Call Moved to Separate Network

September 26, 2019 at 8:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Just Security: “According to a person familiar with the content of the complaint who spoke to Just Security, when the call was over, senior White House officials pulled the verbatim transcript out of the system that it is traditionally stored on and moved it into a separate system reserved for extremely sensitive/highly compartmented programs.”

“This person said that the call between the two leaders had nothing to do with highly classified programs. But, by moving it into this separate system, the White House could control who could see the transcript: only a very small group of people.”

How Trump Planned to Turn Biden Into Clinton

September 26, 2019 at 8:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios shows how President Trump is reviving his 2016 playbook, “trying to sully or smear the Biden family reputation, like he did with the Clintons during his last campaign.”

There are six-parts to the playbook:

  • Argue that your opponent is guilty of something as bad or worse than the accusations against you.
  • Create constant fog, amplified by Twitter. Allege the media is guilty, too.
  • Convince party leaders and Fox News to fall instantly in line, focused solely on your opponent’s supposed transgressions.
  • Demand documents and testimony, fostering an “everyone’s dirty and hiding something” atmosphere.
  • Stymie anyone on your side who’s thinking of dissenting by torching them on Twitter, like he did to Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT).
  • Bet that your own standing, while getting no better, gets no worse.

Trump Clings to CrowdStrike Conspiracy Theory

September 26, 2019 at 8:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “President Trump’s apparent embrace of bizarre conspiracy theories involving the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike in his phone call with Ukraine’s president is a striking illustration of his doubts about the U.S. intelligence agencies’ unanimous conclusion that Russia hacked Democratic servers in the 2016 presidential election.”

“While it is Trump’s efforts on that call to enlist a foreign government to dig up dirt on his political rival Joe Biden that have Democratic lawmakers launching impeachment proceedings, the fact that Trump is still suggesting there’s some sort of frame job in election interference has officials and cybersecurity experts just as irate.”
