Polling Shows Republicans Turning On Trump

September 24, 2026 · 11:00 am ET · Leave a Comment

“In late 2008, at the height of the Great Recession and amid two wars in the Middle East, President George W. Bush posted a historic-low approval rating of just 22 percent. Donald Trump may be coming for that crown — and with some voters, he’s more unpopular than ever,” Rolling Stone reports.

“A series of recent polls shows that while Trump’s overall approval rating is still hovering a little above 30 percent, some of the details behind the numbers are particularly devastating for an incumbent president seeking to guide his party through a contentious set of midterm elections.”

“A poll from CNN released this week, for instance, shows that Trump’s approval among independents is an anemic 25 percent. The network highlighted that his net approval among independents has shifted 86 points in the wrong direction since before the 2024 election. Trump’s popularity is also cratering within his own party. A recent UMass/Amherst poll found that his approval among Republicans has dropped 14 points since March, and that one in six people who voted for him would not vote for him again. Unfortunately for Republicans, Trump insisted “I’m on the ballot!” while speaking at the party’s midterm convention earlier this month.”

Semafor: Some Republicans push to prioritize Husted data center bill.

New York Magazine: “The timeline for early voting varies by state and, in some places, by locality. Six states (Idaho, Minnesota, Mississippi, South Dakota, Vermont, and Virginia) have already entered the window where in-person early voting is authorized. The length of these windows varies, as the Center for Election Research and Innovation explains: Early in-person voting locations are open in 2 states until October 27; until the day before Election Day in 14 states; and up to and including Election Day in as many as 8 states.”

“Angie Nixon, the Democratic nominee for a U.S. Senate seat in Florida, has resolved a trespassing case over her sit-in this year outside the office of Gov. Ron DeSantis (R),” the Washington Post reports.

“After Nixon remained outside the office for several hours, she was arrested and charged with trespassing and resisting an officer without violence. She was set for trial in Tallahassee this week and faced up to two years in prison.”

“But Nixon said Wednesday that she had resolved the case and will pay $250 and complete 15 hours of community service, all of which will be conducted outside her campaign. She did not plead guilty and maintains that she did nothing wrong.”

“President Xi Jinping has a loaded itinerary for the first full day of his trip to the U.S. – a journey made nearly a decade after the Chinese leader’s previous visit – including formal talks with U.S. President Donald Trump, who travelled to Beijing in May,” the South China Morning Post reports.

“According to a schedule released by the Trump administration, the day will begin with an arrival ceremony at the White House. As the two leaders hold an official dialogue, U.S. first lady Melania Trump will accompany her Chinese counterpart, Peng Liyuan, to the National Museum of Asian Art. The couples will reunite for a state dinner in the evening.”

“The blunt tool of banning diesel exports definitely doesn’t work. That same refinery that produces diesel also produces gasoline and jet fuel, so if you can’t export the diesel that comes out of our refineries, you run out of places to store it, and you have to reduce U.S. refining, which would put upward pressure on gasoline prices and jet-fuel prices.”

— Energy Secretary Chris Wright, quoted by The Economist, as the White House is reportedly mulling a ban on diesel exports.

“Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-AL) claimed the airline industry is full of members of the ‘furry’ subculture in a bizarre speech from the Senate floor connecting transgenderism to mental illness,” the New York Post reports.

Said Tuberville: “Gender confusion is an extremely serious mental problem that our society better start addressing. Unfortunately, these gender-confused individuals aren’t just harming themselves; they’re also turning into violent people and hurting other people.”

No President Has Gone Into an Election This Unpopular

G. Elliot Morris: “Our historical polling averages show the president’s updated rating is worse than George W. Bush’s second-term approval rating on the eve of the 2006 midterm that cost Republicans both chambers of Congress.”

“And public mood is approaching where it was toward Richard Nixon during Watergate, in the months before he resigned in disgrace.”

Voters Grow More Concerned About Capitalism

September 24, 2026 · 9:14 am ET · Leave a Comment

“Voter concerns about capitalism are rising amid the populist streak gripping American politics,” according to a new national NBC News survey.

“But voters remain wary of socialism and the Democratic Socialists of America, even as some DSA-aligned candidates have notched high-profile primary wins this year.”

“Positive views of capitalism have dropped since 2018. And for the first time in nearly a decade of NBC News polling, registered voters under 30 years old have more positive views of socialism than capitalism.”

Trump Elevates Tech Titans at U.S.-China Summit

“When Donald Trump meets with Xi Jinping today, he’s not just rolling out a lavish White House welcome — he’s bringing wealthy guests,” Bloomberg reports.

“In the latest example of how Trump has given high-powered executives prime seats at the table (figuratively and literally), tonight’s state dinner is slated to include a who’s-who of the tech world: Elon Musk, Jensen Huang, Tim Cook, Mark Zuckerberg, Sam Altman, Jeff Bezos, and Michael Dell, among others.”

“Trump has almost treated them like an extension of his administration — using their presences to convey power, prestige, and his priorities.”

“President Trump and China’s Xi Jinping are meeting in Washington for their second summit of the year, and expectations are low,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Both sides have played down the odds of ‘deliverables’—diplo-speak for concrete outcomes—signaling they care more about a smooth meeting than the deep differences between the world’s two largest economies.”

New York Times: As Trump hosts Xi at summit, pomp may paper over U.S.-China tensions.

Trump Is a Massive Drag on Republicans

September 24, 2026 · 8:48 am ET · Leave a Comment

Dan Pfeiffer: “It’s hard to overstate how unpopular Trump is. His approval rating is at an all-time low, and his disapproval is at an all-time high.”

“On top of losing the public, Trump is unlikely to have the turnout machine he’s relied on in the past. On Election Day in 2018, 2020, and 2024, Trump’s strong approval among Republicans was near 70%. Today, it’s under 50%.”

“Trump’s approval rating with independents is also putrid. In 2018, it was in the low-to-mid forties. In the most recent NYT poll, only 27% of independents approve of Trump.”

“Put another way, an NBC poll found that only 30% of voters say a Trump endorsement would make them more likely to vote for a candidate; 52% said it would make them less likely.”
