White House Studying Cost of Greenland Takeover

April 2, 2025 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House is preparing an estimate of what it would cost the federal government to control Greenland as a territory, the most concrete effort yet to turn President Donald Trump’s desire to acquire the Danish island into actionable policy,” the Washington Post reports.

“While Trump’s demands elicited international outrage and a rebuke from Denmark, White House officials have in recent weeks taken steps to determine the financial ramifications of Greenland becoming a U.S. territory, including the cost of providing government services for its 58,000 residents.”

Booker’s Epic Speech Puts Democrats Back in the Spotlight

April 2, 2025 at 6:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Cory Booker’s (D-NJ) record marathon speech on the Senate floor won the floundering Democratic Party something it has desperately needed in the Trump era: attention and the applause of its base,” Axios reports.

“Booker’s stemwinder was the rare incidence of Democrats stealing the spotlight from Trump, who has commanded nearly every news cycle since returning to office.”

Quote of the Day

April 2, 2025 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I want to emphasize what Cory Booker did over the last 24 hours may have changed the course of political history. I watched a lot of it. I listened to words. I listened to phrases. How he presents himself did criticize Donald Trump. Of course he did. But he struck the kind of tone that grassroots Democrats are looking for. He gave them a reason to fight. He gave them a reason to stand up and say, this is my country too. Of course, every Republican watching will say, this is nonsense.  But he is not speaking just to Republicans, he’s speaking to Americans, and what I saw over the last 25 hours absolutely blew me away. And just as you sometimes make projections or predictions, I’m gonna do one right here. That speech puts Cory Booker as one of the leaders for the Democratic Party for 2028.”

— GOP pollster Frank Luntz, on NewsNation.

All About Elon

April 2, 2025 at 6:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “In truth, Dems had been desperate to make yesterday’s elections all about Musk, who has several significant drawbacks in his unlikely new role as GOP election figurehead. They include dismal personal poll ratings, unfathomable wealth and a tendency to talk about Social Security as if he’d quite like to give it the chainsaw treatment.”

“But Musk played right into Dems’ hands — plowing not just millions of dollars into the race in Wisconsin, but huge amounts of personal and political capital, making himself the most visible GOP campaigner on the election trail.”

Bongino Tells FBI Employees He’s Not Partisan

April 2, 2025 at 6:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Bongino, the FBI’s deputy director, who rose to popularity as a conservative podcaster bashing Democrats and praising President Trump, sought to reassure the bureau’s employees that he would not act as a “partisan political figure,” the New York Times reports.

Wisconsin Court Race Cost More Than U.K. Election

April 2, 2025 at 5:55 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Don Moynihan: “Money is a an aggressive growing tumor at the heart of American democracy. The 2023 Wisconsin state supreme court race cost $56 million, a national record at the time. The 2025 version blasted that out of the water, and could end up costing almost twice that much.”

“To give a sense of out-of-kilter we are, a single state court race saw significantly more spending than the entire United Kingdom national election.”

Elon Musk Is Becoming a Big Vulnerability for Trump

April 2, 2025 at 5:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Blueprint poll finds Donald Trump’s net job approval rating is -6, while Elon Musk’s is -16.

Key takeaway: Musk’s favorability score has steadily declined since the election and half of voters say he’s not competent to manage a government agency.

Few Think ‘Liberation Day’ Will Bring Clarity

April 2, 2025 at 5:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The new consensus among business owners and economists is that President Trump’s colossal trade announcement Wednesday is just the start, not the end, of global economic uncertainty,” Axios reports.

“Many once hoped the much-hyped reciprocal tariff announcement would settle worldwide economic confusion.”

“Now the fear is that recent weeks’ trade drama — tariff flip-flops and policy hanging in the balance — will stick around for the next four years.”

Elon Musk Was the Big Loser

April 2, 2025 at 5:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Nobody expended more political capital in the Wisconsin Supreme Court contest than Mr. Musk, with the possible exception of the candidates. He invested at least $25 million to elect Judge Schimel, posted about it seemingly nonstop on his social media platform, gave money to voters who signed a petition or posted photos in front of polling places and came to the state for a rally where he handed out a pair of $1 million checks.”

“And in the end, Judge Schimel lost by just a little bit less than the last conservative candidate for the court, who was all but abandoned by Republican donors two years ago.”

CNN: “Musk’s high-profile gamble – and loss – in Wisconsin raises questions about the effectiveness of his money and brand moving forward as he works to help Republicans next year attempt to buck the trend of the president’s party losing ground in the midterms.”

Planned Parenthood Is Trump’s Latest Target

April 2, 2025 at 5:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Planned Parenthood is closing clinics and facing more financial strains as Republican control of Washington opens new avenues for weakening the abortion provider,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“The organization will go before the Supreme Court on Wednesday for a case that will help determine whether states can kick healthcare providers that offer abortions out of their Medicaid programs, a move that would further imperil the organization’s presence in conservative states.”

U.S. Attorney Looks to Undermine Biden Pardons

April 2, 2025 at 5:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ed Martin, the ardent Trump loyalist serving as interim U.S. attorney in Washington, is pursuing an inquiry into whether former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was competent to pardon his family members and others during his final days in office,” the New York Times reports.

“The inquiry, which includes previously unreported letters to Mr. Biden’s family and former White House staff members, uses the levers of federal law enforcement to try to harass Mr. Biden’s family and allies and undermine his decisions as president, while scoring political points with President Trump.”

Auto Sales Surged in Anticipation of Trump’s Tariffs

April 2, 2025 at 5:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The auto industry witnessed a different kind of March madness last month as buyers flocked to dealerships to lock in deals before President Trump’s auto tariffs lift prices by thousands of dollars,“ the New York Times reports.

Conservatives Raise Alarm Over Deportation Tactics

April 2, 2025 at 5:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Influential figures on the right have largely cheered on the opening months of the Trump presidency,” the New York Times reports.

“But as the administration has rushed to carry out deportations as quickly as possible, making mistakes and raising concerns about due process along the way, the unified front in favor of President Trump’s immigration purge is beginning to crack.”

Susan Crawford Wins Wisconsin Supreme Court Seat

April 1, 2025 at 9:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Susan Crawford defeated Brad Schimel in the Wisconsin Supreme Court election, preserving liberals’ 4-3 majority, according to projections from Decision Desk HQ and the Cook Political Report.

NBC News: “The outcome is a setback for President Trump and his billionaire adviser, Elon Musk. Trump endorsed Schimel in the final stretch of the race, while Musk injected himself into the center of it, spending huge sums of money, visiting Wisconsin days out from Election Day and frequently posting about the race on his X feed.”

New York Times: “For Democrats, the result is a jolt of momentum… Her win showed that, at least in one instance, Mr. Musk’s seemingly endless reserves of political cash had energized more Democrats than Republicans.”
