Don’t Trust the Trumpsplainers
David Frum: “The past few weeks have felt like a Cold War thriller in which an enemy agent somehow infiltrates the top of the United States government. Soldiers fighting for democracy have been abandoned to die in the field. The U.S. president vows to annex Canada, Greenland, and the Panama Canal. Long-established alliances are suddenly teetering. Economic bungling has pushed the country toward recession. The only beneficiaries of this bizarre series of MAGA outrages have been America’s geopolitical enemies.”
“Those of us who have reported for any length of time on the pro-Trump movement are called upon again and again to explain what is happening and why. We attend conferences, join television programs, and meet foreign reporters. And when we do, we find ourselves confronted with what I call the opioid dispenser.”
“The opioid dispenser might be a politician, a business leader, or an academic. Whatever their basis of authority, the opioid dispenser offers a message of reassurance.”
Jeanne Shaheen Won’t Run Again in 2026
Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) “will not run for re-election in 2026, bringing an end to a long and singular political career and further complicating Democrats’ efforts to regain a majority in the Senate,” the New York Times reports.
“Her decision not to seek a fourth term will immediately set off a high-stakes race in a state whose voters are famously fickle. Last fall, New Hampshire voters supported former Vice President Kamala Harris for president and elected Democrats to Congress, but they also voted for a Republican governor and expanded Republican majorities in the state legislature.”

Rep. Max Miller (R-OH) was “privately infuriated” when Donald Trump accused Haitian immigrants of eating pets during the 2024 presidential campaign, The Guardian reports.
In a conversation with a fellow Jewish Republican, Miller likened the attacks on Haitians to the “targeting of Jews.”
Greenlanders Back Party That Pushed Hard Against Trump
“Greenlanders voted for a party that has never held power but which took a strong stance against President Trump’s bid to control the mineral-rich island in the final weeks of the campaign, which became dominated by the U.S. leader’s covetous comments,” the Wall Street Journal reports.
“Voters unseated the incumbent prime minister to elect the center-right Demokraatit party that also campaigned heavily on domestic issues such as education, healthcare and jobs, a sign that many Greenlanders, perhaps weary of international attention, decided to turn inward.”
Associated Press: Greenland’s election winners push back against Trump’s wish to take control of the island.
Vote to Block Transgender Bill Could Hurt Ossoff
A new Cygnal poll shows Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA) is deadlocked 44% to 44% against a generic Republican challenger, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
But the numbers shift 52% to 38% in favor of the GOP when voters are told Ossoff “voted to allow men to play in women’s sports if they claim to identify as a woman, taking away opportunities from our girls.”
Republicans Unsettled by Pentagon Spokesperson
“Kingsley Wilson’s appointment as deputy press secretary for the Pentagon has caused consternation among pro-Israel Republicans on Capitol Hill given her long record espousing antisemitic conspiracy theories,” Jewish Insider reports.

“Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin said on Monday he canceled 400 environmental justice and diversity, equity and inclusion grants totaling $1.7 billion in the Trump administration’s latest crackdown on DEI initiatives,” Reuters reports.
Three Things That Usually Happen in the Midterms
Larry Sabato’s Cyrstal Ball notes there are at least three fairly consistent things that we see in midterms compared to presidential elections:
- The turnout of eligible voters in midterms is consistently lower than the turnout in the most recent presidential election.
- Midterm electorates are typically older, whiter, and more educated than presidential electorates.
- The non-presidential party usually wins a higher share of the two-party House vote in the midterm than that party did in the preceding presidential election.
Inflation Comes In Lower Than Forecast
“U.S. consumer prices rose at the slowest pace in four months in February, offering some reprieve after months of stalling inflation progress,” Bloomberg reports.
CNBC: “The consumer price index, a wide-ranging measure of costs across the U.S. economy, ticked up a seasonally adjusted 0.2% for the month, putting the annual inflation rate at 2.8%.”

Hearing Derailed After Lawmaker Misgenders Colleague
“A House subcommittee hearing went off the rails Tuesday when Rep. Keith Self (R-TX) misgendered Sarah McBride (D-DE), the first openly transgender person elected to Congress, and abruptly adjourned the session after a colleague confronted him,” the Washington Post reports.
“Speaking at a hearing on arms control, international security and U.S. assistance to Europe, Self, the Republican chair of the subcommittee on Europe, addressed McBride, a transgender woman, as ‘the representative from Delaware, Mr. McBride.'”
McBride replied to him: “Thank you, Madam Chair.”
Republicans Divided Over Relitigating January 6 Probe
“Republicans are at a standstill over their investigation relitigating the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, with House Speaker Mike Johnson and the Republican leading the effort disagreeing on how to move forward,” CNN reports.
“Johnson wants Republicans to stop investigating the former January 6 committee, including former GOP Rep. Liz Cheney, and narrow its focus, according to three sources familiar with the negotiations. But GOP Rep. Barry Loudermilk, who has been tapped to helm the probe, would prefer a broader mandate, a position backed by some officials at the White House.”
Don Jr. Backs Byron Donalds for Florida Governor
“Donald Trump Jr. is endorsing Rep. Byron Donalds for Florida governor, following in his father’s footsteps and cementing Donalds as the frontrunner over possible contender Casey DeSantis, the state’s first lady,” Axios reports.
“The move by Trump Jr. — a key player in MAGA media — comes after a presidential race in which Donalds was a constant pro-Trump presence on the campaign trail.”
How Do You Like the Trade War Now?
From the Wall Street Journal editorial board:
“The trouble with trade wars is that once they begin they can quickly escalate and get out of control. All the more so when politicians are nearing an election campaign, as Canada now is. Or when Mr. Trump behaves as if his manhood is implicated because a foreign nation won’t take his nasty border taxes lying down.”
“We said from the beginning that this North American trade war is the dumbest in history, and we were being kind.”
Americans Negative on Trump’s Handling of Economy
