Ex-Ambassador Says Trump Pushed Her Out

October 11, 2019 at 12:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine whose abrupt ouster in May has become a topic of interest for House impeachment investigators said Friday that her departure came as a direct result of pressure President Trump placed on the State Department to remove her,” the Washington Post reports.

The New York Times says Yovanovitch “delivered a scathing indictment of his administration’s conduct of foreign policy, warning that private influence and personal gain have usurped diplomats’ judgment, threatening to undermine the nation’s interests and drive talented professionals out of public service.”

“Ms. Yovanovitch’s searing account, delivered at the risk of losing her job, could lend new momentum to the impeachment inquiry that imperils Mr. Trump.”

Trump Just Wants to Talk About TV Shows

October 11, 2019 at 11:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “When Trump goes off script, he usually starts talking about the one subject that compels his interest and occupies most of his waking hours: television. At this moment in the rally, Trump started riffing on a series of pillow ads he has frequently seen…”

“This was a completely typical moment in a Trump rally. The president is attempting to manipulate the darkest impulses in the American soul, goading his followers with an authoritarian vision of themselves as a populist uprising against a sinister international conspiracy. But the leader of the movement is simply too bored to stay on topic, and continually changes the channel on his own speech. You can almost see the president relaxing in his Barcalounger, clicking the remote control.”

“Trump failed as a businessman, but then succeeded playing one on television. During the Obama era, he hit upon a new market in right-wing paranoia, sensing the racial anxieties of aging white America being underserved by a Republican leadership that wanted to talk about budget deficits. He was drawn unexpectedly into the presidency as he chased this audience. And yet he has made it obvious, especially in Minneapolis, that his goal all along was to be talked about favorably on television.”

Trump Obfuscates and Misleads to Make His Case

October 11, 2019 at 11:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s propensity to mislead, misconstrue and obfuscate is escalating as he confronts the threat of becoming just the third president in U.S. history to be impeached,” the Washington Post reports.

“For days, Trump and his allies have repeatedly charged that the whistleblower — whose complaint about Trump’s call with the president of Ukraine set off the current impeachment inquiry — made up a ‘false story,’ even though many of the claims have been shown to be accurate. The president has insisted that his top Democratic and Republican critics on Capitol Hill should be impeached for their efforts against him, despite a centuries-old precedent that prevents such an action.”

“And, White House lawyers this week sent congressional leaders an eight-page letter vowing not to cooperate with the House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry that was laden with imprecise or misleading interpretations of congressional oversight powers and the chamber’s constitutional right to impeach, according to legal experts.”

Greg Sargent: At rally, Trump tells five big lies in three minutes.

The BBC caught scam call center workers on hidden cameras as they laughed at the people they were tricking. One worker bragged about making $250k from victims. The disturbing truth? Scammers don’t pick phone numbers at random. They buy your data from brokers.

Once your data is out there, it’s not just calls. It’s phishing, impersonation, and identity theft. What Happened to ‘No Collusion’?

October 11, 2019 at 10:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Bulwark: “Team Trump’s ‘no collusion’ tune has gone silent in the latest round of foreign election interference scandals. The evidence is clear from Trump’s own words that he sought to motivate Ukraine to manufacture dirt on Joe Biden and his son by opening a criminal investigation in Ukraine that—to date—has no basis in fact. The silence suggests that Team Trump knows the ‘no collusion’ cry won’t work this time.”

Trump Loses Appeal of House Subpoena for Tax Returns

October 11, 2019 at 10:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal appeals court on Friday rejected President Trump’s bid to block a House committee subpoena for his income tax returns, CNBC reports.

Trump could seek to challenge this decision by asking the full set of judges in the 2nd Circuit to re-hear the case.

Or he could ask the U.S. Supreme Court to take his appeal.

Bonus Quote of the Day

October 11, 2019 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Try to impeach him, just try it. There will be a spasm of violence and insurrection in this country like you’ve never seen. Both sides are heavily armed. A politician who votes for it will be endangering their own life.”

— Trump confidant Roger Stone, quoted by Yahoo News.

Sondland’s Testimony May Open Door

October 11, 2019 at 9:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Lawfare executive editor Susan Hennessey says it’s significant that Ambassador Gordon Sondland has agreed to testify next week over State Department objections: “This will give cover to career officials to do the same, even if Pompeo tries to stop them.”

Pentagon Deemed Withholding of Ukraine Aid Illegal

October 11, 2019 at 9:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Yahoo News: “The Pentagon was confused. Hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to Ukraine had been appropriated in late 2018 by Congress, intended to help fend off aggression by neighboring Russia. But well into 2019, as summer was edging toward autumn, the funds had still not moved.”

“Department of Defense officials began to worry that the funds would never make it to Ukraine, since the appropriations would expire with the end of the fiscal year on Sept. 30. They even began to prepare a legal challenge to the freezing of the funds, leading to an unprecedented fight within the Trump administration.”

Larry Hogan Now Backs Impeachment Inquiry

October 11, 2019 at 9:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R) publicly expressed support for the impeachment inquiry of President Donald Trump, joining a small but growing number of Republicans breaking from the party’s mostly unwavering support of the president,” Politico reports.

Said Hogan: “I think we do need an inquiry because we have to get to the bottom of it. I’m not ready to say I support impeachment and the removal of the president, but I do think we should have an impeachment inquiry.”

The Spiro Agnew Option

October 11, 2019 at 9:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

Despite the torrent of bad political news hitting the White House, it’s still hard to imagine President Trump being removed from office after the House votes to impeach him. Assuming all 47 Democratic senators vote to convict in a Senate trial, there just aren’t 20 Republican senators willing to stand up to him to get to the 67 votes needed.

The Wall Street Journal looks at the 19 bellwether counties that have sided with the ultimate winner in every presidential election since 1980.

Wisconsin, a top 2020 battleground, has the most of any state with four.

Quote of the Day

“Yeah, I disagree with what he’s doing now, I wish it wasn’t happening, but I still fully support it.”

— Rep. Mark Green (R-TN), on NPR, talking about President Trump and his pullout of troops from Syria.

It’s Trump vs. Constitution

October 11, 2019 at 8:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has spent his time in office trying to bend the conventions of the American presidency to his will. Now he appears to be trying to override a core principle of democracy: that no one is above the law,” the AP reports.

“Faced with an impeachment inquiry, Trump has openly defied the core constructs of the Constitution. He chafes at the idea of co-equal branches of government and rejects the House’s right to investigate him.”

“He has deployed a convoluted logic in which he has declared that the courts can’t investigate him because as president he cannot be charged with a crime but also that Congress cannot impeach him because its inquiry is politically illegitimate.”

Biden Warns Rivals Off Attacks on His Family

October 11, 2019 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden has a warning for his Democratic rivals as they prepare for the fourth televised debate next week: Stay away from the issue of Ukraine and Hunter Biden,” Bloomberg reports.

“The 12 candidates participating in Tuesday’s debate in Westerville, Ohio, are honing their answers to questions about the U.S. House impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, which centers on the president’s request to the leader of Ukraine to investigate unfounded allegations about Biden and his son’s work there.”

McSally Allies Seek Help as Democrats Pummel Senator

October 11, 2019 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Martha McSally had incurred weeks of unchecked attacks from Democratic groups, and the Arizona Republican’s allies are pleading for help,” the Washington Examiner reports.

“Since early September, Advancing Arizona has targeted McSally with a barrage of advertising as part of a $1.4 million television buy from the so-called dark money group that runs through late November. Need to Impeach, a super PAC, is chipping in an additional $134,000 in cable and digital attacks as Democrats in the House of Representatives accelerate an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.”
