What Happened to Rudy Giuliani?

October 7, 2019 at 1:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ken Frydman, a former press secretary for Rudy Giuliani, writes in the New York Times: “After his mayoralty ended in 2002, Rudy went to work for what seemed like every rich bad guy and tinpot dictator who called. (So going to work for Mr. Trump made sense.) He charged $100,000 for self-aggrandizing speeches about his heroic leadership after Sept. 11. He became a multimillionaire.”

“In perfect political symmetry, Rudy Giuliani now does Donald Trump’s dirty work: Vainly trying to cover up the Ukrainian cover-up and attacking a Democratic presidential front-runner, Joe Biden, and his son, Hunter.”

“Watching and reading Rudy’s ferocious lying for Mr. Trump, whether on Fox or CNN, forced me to re-examine his last 25 years, especially the profiteering from Sept. 11. But Ukraine was the coup de grâce. We who admired him for so long expected much more from Rudy Giuliani and his legacy.”

‘In My Great and Unmatched Wisdom’

October 7, 2019 at 1:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After receiving considerable push back from Republicans in his decision to abandon Kurdish fighters in Syria, President Trump issued this warning:

“As I have stated strongly before, and just to reiterate, if Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!). They must, with Europe and others, watch over the captured ISIS fighters and families.”

He continued: “The U.S. has done far more than anyone could have ever expected, including the capture of 100% of the ISIS Caliphate. It is time now for others in the region, some of great wealth, to protect their own territory. THE USA IS GREAT!”

Trump’s Defiance of Oversight Threatens Constitution

October 7, 2019 at 1:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats are expected to interview other critical witnesses this week as they try to build a case for impeaching Trump over his alleged willingness to seek the help of a foreign leader for his own political gain,” the Washington Post reports.

“But these rare triumphs are seen as fleeting even by Democrats and serve as a stark reminder of how much the administration has run roughshod over Congress, prompting concerns among constitutional experts and lawmakers that Trump’s hostile stance toward congressional oversight is undermining the separation of powers in a way that could have long-term implications for democracy.”

House Subpoenas Pentagon, White House Budget Office

October 7, 2019 at 1:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats on Monday issued subpoenas to the Pentagon and the White House budget office as part of their impeachment inquiry, requesting documents related to U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to withhold military assistance for Ukraine,” the New York Times reports.

How Will Impeachment End?

October 7, 2019 at 12:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Matthew Yglesias: “We, of course, don’t know what’s going to happen.”

“But what we can tell you is that there are roughly nine scenarios of varying degrees of plausibility that are legally and constitutionally possible. Some of these involve Trump being impeached and some involve him leaving office and possibly, but not necessarily, both of those things. Some involve Nancy Pelosi, Mike Pompeo, or Steve Mnuchin becoming president. In theory, Trump could even be booted from office and then run again for reelection in 2020.”

Warren and Biden Lead the Democratic Field

October 7, 2019 at 11:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new IBD/TIPP poll finds Elizabeth Warren leading the Democratic pack with 27%, followed by Joe Biden at 26%, Bernie Sanders at 10% and Pete Buttigieg at 7%.

No other Democrat registered more than 3% in the survey.

Warren Looks to Build Appeal In GOP Strongholds

October 7, 2019 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “The Massachusetts senator has proven she’s popular in Democratic strongholds, perhaps most memorably when she filled New York’s Washington Square Park last month. But as she’s rising in the polls and sitting on a fresh pile of campaign cash, Warren is also frequently hitting places where she might be less welcome. That includes Nevada’s capital, a conservative area with a proud cowboy streak that’s a seven-hour drive from the glitz of Democrat-friendly Las Vegas.”

“These trips test whether the progressive message that has fueled Warren’s rise can resonate in all regions. It’s an important hurdle for Warren to clear to prove that, if she were to become the Democratic nominee, she could win back voters in areas that sided with President Donald Trump in 2016.”

“Her trip last week to Carson City gave reason for optimism. Warren drew more than 1,000 people on a Wednesday night.”

Trump Loses ‘Fox & Friends’ on Syria Pullout

October 7, 2019 at 11:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Fox & Friends host Brian Kilmeade blasted President Trump’s decision to withdraw troops from Syria.

Said Kimeade: “What kind of message is that to the next ally that wants to side with us? All we did is arm them, and they did all the work. And now we say ‘good luck. Good luck surviving.'”

He added: “What a disaster.”

October 7, 2019 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley blasted President Trump’s decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Syria and allow Turkey to carry out an operation in the region.

Said Haley: “We must always have the backs of our allies, if we expect them to have our back. The Kurds were instrumental in our successful fight against ISIS in Syria. Leaving them to die is a big mistake.”

October 7, 2019 at 10:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Energy Secretary Rick Perry said he had no plans to resign now or next month, denying a report that he was expected to announce his resignation in November, Reuters reports.

Said Perry: “No. I’m here, I’m serving.”

He added: “They’ve been writing the story for at least nine months now. One of these days they will probably get it right, but it’s not today, it’s not tomorrow, it’s not next month.”

Quote of the Day

October 7, 2019 at 9:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Nobody wants to be the zebra that strays from the pack and gets gobbled up by the lion. They have to hold hands and jump simultaneously.”

— A former senior Trump administration official, quoted by the Washington Post, on the unwillingness of Senate Republicans to criticize President Trump.

Barr Chases Conspiracy Theories

October 7, 2019 at 9:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Attorney General Bill Barr has taken an intense interest in a mysterious European professor whose conversation with an adviser to Trump’s 2016 campaign helped launch the FBI’s Russia investigation and who has since become the focal point of an unproven conservative theory, the Washington Post reports.

“Those involved in the FBI investigation said they are mystified by the attorney general’s activities and interest in the professor, Joseph Mifsud, and they suspect that Barr might be using Justice Department resources to validate conjecture that Mifsud was deployed against a Trump adviser by Western intelligence to manufacture a basis to investigate the campaign.”

Said on person involved in the Russia probe: “It just seems like they’re doing everything they can to delegitimize the origins of that investigation.”

Graham Rips Trump’s Decision to Pull Troops from Syria

October 7, 2019 at 9:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is enraged over President Trump’s decision to abandon U.S. allies in northern Syria and took the rare step of challenging the president on Twitter and in a phone call to Fox News, calling it a “disaster in the making.”

Said Graham: “If I’m an Isis fighter, I’ve got a second lease on life. So to those who think ISIS has been defeated, you will soon see.”
