Trump Looks to McConnell to Keep GOP Together

October 9, 2019 at 8:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Even as the White House appears to settle on the legal tactics to stave off Democrats’ impeachment demands, uncertainty and unease over Trump’s messaging approach remains high among his Republican allies, who see the ever-growing inquiry consuming the White House,” CNN reports.

“Trump has offered scant indication he is turning his focus to governing… Instead, the President has spent hours tweeting about the impeachment and lighting up the phone lines of his allies on Capitol Hill — including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, to whom he’s stressed the importance of Republican unity.”

“In private, Trump is increasingly leaning on the Republican leader in the Senate. In a return to the President’s panicked behavior during the height of the Mueller investigation, Trump is calling McConnell as often as three times a day.”

Pence to Release Transcripts of Ukraine Calls

October 9, 2019 at 8:53 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Vice President Mike Pence said he is working with the White House counsel’s office to release transcripts of his own calls with Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy,” the AP reports.

“Pence said records of his two phone conversations would help exonerate President Trump of any wrongdoing.”

Pence also said he “never discussed the issue of the Bidens” with Zelenskiy.

Trump Thinks He Can Flip Minnesota

October 9, 2019 at 7:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Trump barely set foot in the state during his 2016 campaign, and his field organization on the ground was nonexistent: The lone Trump campaign staff member working the state was moved to Colorado before Election Day. But Mr. Trump lost Minnesota to his former rival Hillary Clinton by 1.5 percentage points, or less than 45,000 votes.”

“This time, the Trump campaign is determined not to let Minnesota go without trying. So on Thursday night, Mr. Trump will arrive in Minneapolis, one of the most Democratic congressional districts in the country, for his first political rally since House Democrats began an impeachment investigation that threatens to engulf his presidency.”

The consensus Electoral Vote Map shows Minnesota still leans blue.

Why Are Republicans So Unmoved by Trump’s Actions?

October 9, 2019 at 7:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ruth Marcus: “Fifteen current Republican senators served in the House or Senate during the Clinton impeachment. All but one of those — Sen. Susan Collins of Maine — voted either to impeach Clinton or to convict him and remove him from office. I’d challenge any of them to explain why they deemed Clinton’s behavior so bad and are so unmoved by Trump’s.”

“Polling suggests the American people are not distracted by this noise and grasp the gravity of Trump’s conduct. Perhaps their leaders will read and follow.”

Trump Pushed to Drop Charges Against Giuliani Client

October 9, 2019 at 6:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump pressed then-Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to help persuade the Justice Department to drop a criminal case against an Iranian-Turkish gold trader who was a client of Rudy Giuliani,” Bloomberg reports.

“Tillerson refused, arguing it would constitute interference in an ongoing investigation of the trader, Reza Zarrab, according to the people. They said other participants in the Oval Office were shocked by the request.”

Democrats Feel They Have Enough to Impeach Trump

October 9, 2019 at 6:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats are increasingly confident they have all the evidence they need to impeach President Trump for obstructing their investigations,” Politico reports.

“But they’re not prepared to impeach Trump on obstruction of Congress alone. As they contemplate their impeachment strategy, Democrats say they prefer any obstruction charge to play a supporting, rather than starring, role in their efforts.”

Majority Want Trump Impeached and Removed

October 9, 2019 at 6:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Fox News poll finds 51% of voters want President Trump impeached and removed from office, while another 4% want him impeached but not removed, and 40% oppose impeachment altogether.

“Since July, support for impeachment increased among voters of all stripes: up 11 points among Democrats, 5 points among Republicans, and 3 among independents. Support also went up among some of Trump’s key constituencies, including white evangelical Christians (+5 points), white men without a college degree (+8), and rural whites (+10).”

The Swing Senators on Impeachment

October 9, 2019 at 6:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Kane: “Instead of the already vulnerable Republicans, Democrats should focus on a clutch of roughly 10 incumbents with several similar character traits: senior statesmen within their caucus who have either announced their plans to retire or have signaled they are likely to not run for reelection. These GOP senators are at the point in their careers where history’s judgment might mean more to them than the views of today’s conservative activists.”

“Some Democrats have taken note of this group, including Republicans such as Sens. Lamar Alexander (Tenn.), Richard Burr (N.C.) and Johnny Isakson (Ga.), because their remarks so far on Trump and Ukraine have been very brief or just nonexistent.”

Said Sen. Chris Coons (D-DE): “I am not optimistic so far, but there is lots of silence. It has been unusually quiet. I think most of them are holding their breath.”

Warren Smear Shows How Facts Can Be Distorted

October 9, 2019 at 6:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Margaret Sullivan looks at the story that challenged Elizabeth Warren’s claim that she was fired as a teacher for being pregnant and concludes, “A news report can be narrowly factual, and still plenty unfair.”

“There is no big controversy here. No apparent lie and no ‘character issue’ that should unduly concern the voting public. If there is a scandal here, it’s how — in the bad-faith media world — narrowly presented facts without sufficient context can do unfair harm.”

“They can and will be weaponized, falsely regurgitated and twisted beyond recognition.”

House Democrats Plan New Wave of Subpoenas

October 9, 2019 at 5:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Democrats are preparing a flurry of subpoenas in the face of the Trump administration’s stonewalling of their impeachment investigation, amid a new debate within their caucus over holding a vote to formally authorize the inquiry in order to call the White House’s bluff,” CNN reports.

“In the face of the blistering White House letter refusing to cooperate with their probe, Democrats expect they are likely done with any voluntary interviews for most witnesses… And Democrats are now threatening subpoenas to associates of Rudy Giuliani and considering them for current State Department officials, including former US Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch.”

Whistleblower Worked With a 2020 Democrat

October 9, 2019 at 4:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The whistleblower who filed a complaint about President Trump’s July phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is a registered Democrat who had a “prior working relationship with a current 2020 Democratic presidential contender,” a source familiar with the matter tells CBS News.

The nature of the “prior working relationship” remains unclear.

Trump Says ISIS Fighters Will Likely Flee to Europe

October 9, 2019 at 4:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

When asked if he was concerned that Islamic State fighters would be able to escape because of Turkey’s military operation in Syria, Trump predicted that the militants would not travel to the United States, CBS News reports.

Said Trump: “They’re going to be escaping to Europe.”

His comment was apparently meant to reassure Americans.

Sanders Said He ‘Misspoke’ About Slowing Down

October 9, 2019 at 4:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bernie Sanders “tamped down on speculation that he would slow his presidential campaign after he suffered a heart attack last week, saying he plans to compete as vigorously as ever for the 2020 Democratic nomination,” NBC News reports.

Said Sanders: “I misspoke the other day, I said a word I should not have said and media drives me a little bit nuts to make a big deal about it. We’re going to get back into the groove of a very vigorous campaign, I love doing rallies and I love doing town meetings.”

He added: “I want to start off slower and build up and build up and build up.”

Giuliani Says Biden Will Be Called to Testify

October 9, 2019 at 4:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani said he believes Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham (R-SC) will call Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden to testify before his panel about corruption in Ukraine, The Hill reports.

Graham told reporters weeks ago that he had no intention of bringing the Bidens in, but Giuliani said he believed that position had changed amid an escalating Democratic impeachment effort.

Matt Drudge Sours on Trump

October 9, 2019 at 3:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “Not only is Drudge’s website aggressively covering the impeachment news, it is doing so by featuring commentary from some of the president’s fiercest critics or the harshest criticism of him.”

The Full Whistleblower Memo

October 9, 2019 at 3:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS News has the full contents of what appears to be a memo written by the whistleblower one day after President Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in July.

“The official asserted that the President used the call to persuade Ukrainian authorities to investigate his political rivals, chiefly former Vice President Biden and his son, Hunter. The official stated that there was already a conversation underway with White House lawyers about how to handle the discussion because, in the official’s view, the President had clearly committed a criminal act by urging a foreign power to investigate a U.S. person for the purposes of advancing his own reelection bid in 2020.”

Turkey Claims Trump Knew of Military Operation

October 9, 2019 at 3:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A senior adviser to the Turkish president told CNN that President Trump knew in advance “precisely” the scope of the military operation in northern Syria.

Intelligence Analyst Indicted for Leaking Secrets

October 9, 2019 at 2:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Department of Justice on Wednesday announced an indictment of Henry Kyle Frese, a Defense Intelligence Agency analyst prosecutors say allegedly leaked classified information to two journalists,” ABC News reports.

“According to a court filing in the Eastern District of Virginia, between 2018 and 2019 Frese allegedly provided ‘top secret’ intelligence reports regarding ‘a foreign country’s weapons systems’ to a journalist he lived with and who prosecutors say he was involved with romantically.”
