Inside Obama’s Role in Wrapping Up the Primary

April 14, 2020 at 9:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Mr. Obama has been considerably more engaged in the campaign’s denouement than has been previously revealed.”

“And for months, he kept in close contact with senior party officials, in hopes of preventing a repeat of the protracted and nasty 2016 primary race.”

“Then, in the weeks after it became clear that Mr. Biden was the party’s near-certain nominee, Mr. Obama — telling a friend he needed to ‘accelerate the endgame’ — had at least four long conversations with his former vice president’s remaining rival, Senator Bernie Sanders. Mr. Obama’s efforts to ease the senator out of the race played a significant role in his decision to end his bid and, on Monday, endorse Mr. Biden.”

Relief Package Overwhelmingly Benefits Millionaires

April 14, 2020 at 8:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than 80 percent of the benefits of a tax change tucked into the coronavirus relief package passed by Congress last month will go to those who earn more than $1 million annually,” the Washington Post reports.

“The provision, inserted into the law by Senate Republicans, temporarily suspends a limitation on how much owners of businesses formed as ‘pass-through’ entities can deduct in taxes from losses on other business income. The limitation was created as part of the 2017 Republican tax law to offset other tax cuts to firms in that legislation.”

April 14, 2020 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Chris Cuomo used his SiriusXM show yesterday to vent about his role as CNN anchor, the New York Post reports.

Said Cuomo: “I don’t like what I do professionally… I don’t think it’s worth my time.”

Cuomo said he missed the freedom to tell his critics to “go to hell,” adding: “That matters to me more than making millions of dollars a year… because I’ve saved my money and I don’t need it anymore.”

April 14, 2020 at 8:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Black Running Mate Would Boost Enthusiasm for Biden

April 14, 2020 at 8:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new poll conducted for Black PAC finds black voters in battleground states would be more enthusiastic about voting for Joe Biden in November if he chose an African-American woman as a running mate.

“Biden is already highly popular with black voters… But 55% of African-American voters said they would be more excited to turn out or vote for Biden if he picked a black woman to join his ticket, the poll showed. Another 27% said the pick made no difference because they’d stick with Biden.”

Cable Warned of Safety Problems at Wuhan Lab

April 14, 2020 at 8:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Josh Rogin obtained a U.S. State Department cable from January 2018 that complains about safety and management weaknesses at a Chinese lab, and specifically flagged concerns that its work on bat coronaviruses could be a threat to public health.

“The cables have fueled discussions inside the U.S. government about whether this or another Wuhan lab was the source of the virus — even though conclusive proof has yet to emerge.”

Biden Has Multiple Paths to Victory

April 14, 2020 at 8:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden’s resurgence to become the Democrats’ presumptive nominee is opening new paths to defeat President Trump, swing-state polls show,” Axios reports.

“If Biden can keep his current leads over Trump in general-election matchups, it could create opportunities for pickups of three big states — Florida, Arizona and North Carolina.”

“That’s without hurting Dems’ chances to take back Michigan, Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, the key wins that sent Trump to the White House in 2016.”

Key 2020 States Reel Under Twin Blows of Virus, Job Loss

April 14, 2020 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “The booming economy Trump hoped to ride to a second term is collapsing – with some forecasting a national unemployment rate as high as 30% – and the trifecta of states that delivered him the presidency will likely bear the brunt.”

“Michigan, which Trump won in 2016 by 10,704 votes, now ranks just behind New York and New Jersey in the number of coronavirus deaths, with 1,479 fatalities as of Monday. Pennsylvania, which has the fourth-largest number of coronavirus cases, ranked first in the nation in percentage of new unemployment claims in the last two weeks of March. He carried the Keystone State by 44,292 votes in 2016.”

“And Wisconsin Democrats won’t soon forget that Republicans in the State Legislature overruled the governor to force the state’s primary to go forward with in-person voting last week, prompting troubling scenes of mask-clad voters gathering to cast their ballots.”

Also important: “The economic damage is falling hardest on a key part of the Trump coalition — blue-collar workers.”

Democrats Not In Disarray

April 14, 2020 at 7:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “It may have taken a once-in-a-century pandemic, but the Democrats are not in disarray.”

“After presidential primary races in 2008 and 2016 that stretched across all 50 states, the 2020 contest ended on an altogether tidy note on Monday as Senator Bernie Sanders appeared on a live stream with Joseph R. Biden Jr. and told him: ‘We need you in the White House.'”

“The endorsement was quick in the making, full-throated in nature and offered a vivid illustration of how differently this election is unfolding from the often bitter last two Democratic nominating contests.”

Cities Brace for Budget Shortfalls

April 14, 2020 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than 2,100 U.S. cities are anticipating major budget shortfalls this year and many are planning to slash programs and cut staff in response, illustrating the widespread financial havoc threatened by the coronavirus pandemic,” the Washington Post reports.

“The bleak outlook — shared by local governments representing roughly 93 million people nationwide — led some top mayors and other leaders to call for greater federal aid to protect cities now forced to choose between balancing their cash-strapped ledgers and sustaining the public services that residents need most.”

Biden Widens Lead In Arizona

April 14, 2020 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new OH Predictive Insights poll in Arizona finds Joe Biden leading President Trump, 52% to 43%.

“However, Biden’s lead in these polls may not be as solid as it first appears. There are signs that Trump’s base may be much more energized than the former vice president’s. Seven in 10 voters who said they preferred Trump in a head-to-head matchup with Biden said they were ‘Extremely enthusiastic’ about voting in the upcoming election, compared to only 3 in 5 Biden supporters.”

Biden Breaks Guidelines In Running Mate Search

April 14, 2020 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “The selection of a vice presidential running mate has been one of the most clandestine operations in modern American politics. Then along came Joe Biden.”

“The apparent Democratic presidential nominee has made many of the moves others in his position have avoided in the past. He has: narrowed the field substantially in a nationally televised debate by pledging to pick a woman running mate; talked about the process in great detail at his now-virtual fundraisers; interviewed one likely candidate on his own podcast; and routinely offers typically candid updates in TV interviews.”

April 14, 2020 at 6:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Manafort, is seeking early release from prison due to the threat the coronavirus poses to his health, Politico reports.

“Manafort lawyer Kevin Downing made the request to the federal Bureau of Prisons on Monday, asking that the 71-year-old lobbyist and political consultant be transferred to home confinement to serve the remainder of his seven-and-a-half year sentence for a series of convictions on charges of tax evasion, failing to report foreign bank accounts, witness tampering and engaging in unregistered lobbying for foreign interests.”

Pelosi Seizes the Bully Pulpit

April 14, 2020 at 6:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“As President Trump beams into American homes with his daily coronavirus briefings, Speaker Nancy Pelosi has decided the best way to counter him is to be everywhere — even if that means doing so from her San Francisco kitchen,” Politico reports.

“Almost daily, Pelosi pops up on one network or another — even cycling through the late-night talk show junket — dropping in for interviews from a computer propped up on a dining room table that sits just off her West Coast kitchen.”

“For Pelosi, leading the counterprogramming is the most effective antidote to Trump’s nearly daily briefings. Since first joining the news conferences a month ago, Trump has been repeatedly criticized for peppering his appearances with falsehoods during the briefings, which often stretch beyond two hours.”

Administration Seeks Delay In Census Deadlines

April 14, 2020 at 6:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The Trump administration is moving to delay some deadlines for the 2020 census due to coronavirus, including delivering data to states for congressional redistricting. The Census Bureau is requesting Congress allow a 120-day delay on some data-reporting deadlines, according to a joint statement Monday by Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and Census Bureau Director Steven Dillingham. The delay would accommodate social distancing guidelines for workers to prevent the spread of the disease.”
