Line of Succession Not Clear In Britain

April 6, 2020 at 3:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg: “While the U.S. constitution provides for the vice president to take over if the president becomes incapacitated (nine American ‘veeps’ have succeeded mid-term presidents), Britain’s government has no such constitutional set-up. Not since Nick Clegg was given the unusual role of deputy prime minister in the 2010 Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition has the U.K. even had an official number two.”

“The very idea of ‘cabinet government’ establishes the prime minister as first among equals, and Johnson — often via his most senior adviser Dominic Cummings — has extended this principle much further than others as he’s centralized control of his administration. But as the Queen’s most senior government adviser, he serves only so long as his cabinet supports him, one reason for the constant rumors of plotting during his predecessor Theresa May’s unsteady time. Different cabinet officials stand in for the prime minister during weekly parliamentary questions if he’s unavailable; during this crisis, several including Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove and Health Secretary Matt Hancock have done the daily press briefings.”

Trump Gives New Material for Attack Ads Every Day

April 6, 2020 at 2:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “As Democrats escalate their general-election campaign against the president, they have targeted his failure to act urgently to deflect the damage the coronavirus is wreaking over lives and the economy, as he brushed aside intelligence briefings and warnings from health officials while holding fundraisers and gathering thousands of his followers at rallies.”

“Their greatest ammunition? Trump’s own comments, aired daily in the marathon coronavirus briefings where he commands center stage.”

The Politics Industry

April 6, 2020 at 2:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This looks really interesting: The Politics Industry: How Political Innovation Can Break Partisan Gridlock and Save Our Democracy by Katherine M. Gehl and Michael E. Porter.

“They ingeniously apply the tools of business analysis — and Porter’s distinctive Five Forces framework — to show how the political system functions just as every other competitive industry does. Even more importantly, they argue that the political system can be changed, just as industries can be changed, by adopting a new and different strategy, a clear set of choices of things to do — and not do — in four key areas: the election process, the legislative ‘machinery,’ the role of money, and the opening up of competition. The authors focus only on those solutions that are powerful and capable of having a significant impact, as well as achievable within a short period.”

Trump’s Approval Bump Ended Ahead of Schedule

April 6, 2020 at 2:04 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Harry Enten: “Trump clearly experienced a bump in his popularity (i.e. a rally around the flag effect) thanks to his response to the coronavirus pandemic… The latest data, however, suggests that Trump’s rise may have stopped, which isn’t shocking based on the history of rally around the flag events.”

“If it is, in fact, the case that Trump’s bump has hit a wall, it would have occurred a little bit before I might have expected. I went back and examined eight different rally around the flag events from six presidents since the beginning of World War II.”

“The median event saw the president’s bounce peak a little bit more than a month after his approval rating began to rise. Trump’s would have peaked only about two weeks into it.”

Wisconsin Governor Suspends In-Person Voting

April 6, 2020 at 1:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers (D) issued an executive order Monday suspending in-person voting in Tuesday’s elections, citing the intensifying health threat of the coronavirus pandemic,” the Washington Post reports.

“The abrupt move came after the GOP-controlled state legislature refused to postpone the vote during a special session Evers called on Saturday.”

“Evers’s order Monday postpones in-person voting and the receipt deadline for mail-in ballots to June 9.”

The AP reports it’s “a move that will almost certainly prompt a court challenge and inject new uncertainty about whether the election will move forward.”

‘Fox News with Even Less Shame’

April 6, 2020 at 1:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

John Oliver spent 18 minutes eviscerating OAN, President Trump’s new favorite media outlet.

Said Oliver: “The whole selling point for OAN is that they are Fox News with even less shame and even fewer scruples.”

He added: “I know that it is easy to dismiss OAN as just a stupid, little-watched, borderline self-parody. The problem is, if we’re learning one thing right now, it’s that toxic things that start small can get big fast, and it’s dangerous to ignore them.”

Wisconsin Mayors Urge Postponement of Primary

April 6, 2020 at 1:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mayors from some of the most populous cities in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee and Madison, are calling on the state’s top health official to shut down in-person voting at Tuesday’s primary, as a legal battle over absentee voting in the state reaches the Supreme Court,” Politico reports.

From the letter: “We implore you to implement all emergency measures necessary to control the spread of COVID-19, a communicable disease. Specifically, we need you to step up and stop the State of Wisconsin from putting hundreds of thousands of citizens at risk by requiring them to vote at the polls while this ugly pandemic spreads.”

Nathanial Rakich: Yes, Wisconsin still plans to hold its primary on Tuesday.

April 6, 2020 at 11:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The intelligence community inspector general whom President Trump fired late Friday night has called on whistle-blowers to overcome any fears and come forward with information about waste and illegality in the government despite the administration’s reprisals,” the New York Times reports.

Said Michael Atkinson: “The American people deserve an honest and effective government. They are counting on you to use authorized channels to bravely speak up — there is no disgrace for doing so.”

He added: “Please do not allow recent events to silence your voices.”

Trump Lashes Out at Newspapers

April 6, 2020 at 11:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump railed against the New York Times and Washington Post after both publications criticized his handling of the coronavirus pandemic:

Advertising in the Failing New York Times is WAY down. Washington Post is not much better. I can’t say whether this is because they are Fake News sources of information, to a level that few can understand, or the Virus is just plain beating them up. Fake News is bad for America!

Advertising is down for all publications due to the recent collapse in economic activity.

The government’s broader ambition is that basic income becomes an instrument “that stays forever, that becomes a structural instrument, a permanent instrument.”

In the mail: You Never Forget Your First: A Biography of George Washington by Alexis Coe.

“After an unlikely victory in the Revolutionary War cast him as the nation’s hero, he was desperate to retire, but the founders pressured him into the presidency–twice. When he retired years later, no one talked him out of it. He left the highest office heartbroken over the partisan nightmare his backstabbing cabinet had created.”
