Off the Rails

October 3, 2019 at 12:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Aaron Blake: “The idea that President Trump has finally gone over the edge is an overwrought journalistic genre. Oftentimes, people simply forget all that has come before when they declare him to be particularly unwieldy or off the rails at a particular moment. And his opponents are far too anxious to find examples of Trump finally reaching a threshold that suggests he has completely thrown caution to the wind and may be just giving up.”

“All of that said, it has been some week for Trump — even by his standards.”

Quote of the Day

October 3, 2019 at 12:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“No, no war room… Russia was much more complicated and after two and half years and after they spent $42 million, there was no collusion, no obstruction, they got nothing, so I think we’re going to keep doing it the way we’re doing it.”

— President Trump, in an interview with the New York Post, on how he’ll defend himself against impeachment proceedings.

High Crimes on the White House Lawn

October 3, 2019 at 11:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Chait: “Donald Trump is being impeached for using his office to pressure foreign countries to investigate his political rivals. It is not clear Trump understands that, because he simply continues committing this offense in broad daylight.”

“In remarks to reporters today, Trump was asked what he wants Ukraine to do about the Bidens. He replied, ‘If they were honest about it, they would start a major investigation into the Bidens.’ While elaborating on his answer, he added that he would also suggest China launch an investigation of the Biden family.”

“Of course, the idea that any American citizens should be subject to the Chinese justice system is absurd. The only possible way Trump could desire such an investigation would be if he believes China would fix the outcome in order to win his favor.”

The IRS just announced new tax brackets for 2026, sparking a rush of Americans updating their financial details online. Scammers are watching too—ready to pounce on exposed personal data.

Evangelist Says Impeachment Will Cause Unraveling

October 3, 2019 at 11:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Evangelist Franklin Graham told Religion News Service that impeaching President Trump could cause the nation to “unravel.”

Said Graham: “Our country could begin to unravel if an elected president is thrown out of office because of lies and the media. It could be a devastating thing. We’re in very dangerous territory. I would encourage all the politicians to look very carefully at where we are and first of all make sure that truth is told.”

Duncan Hunter Way Behind In California’s 50th

October 3, 2019 at 11:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new SurveyUSA poll in California’s 50th congressional district shows indicted Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) facing an uphill climb to re-election, trailing three candidates.

Ammar Campa-Najjar (D), who narrowly lost to Hunter a year ago, leads with 31%, followed by Carl DeMaio (R) at 20%, Darrell Issa (R) at 16% and Hunter at 11%.

The top two finishers, regardless of party affiliation, will advance to the general election next November.

Trump Wants China to Investigate Biden

October 3, 2019 at 10:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told reporters that China should launch an investigation into Joe and Hunter Biden, though he noted that hasn’t yet asked Chinese President Xi Jinping to do so, Axios reports.

The statement came as Trump was asked once again what he hoped Ukraine President Zelensky would do about the Bidens when they spoke on their now infamous phone call in July.

Said Trump: “Well I would think if they were honest about it, they would start a major investigation into the Bidens. It’s a very simple answer. They should investigate the Bidens. How does a company newly formed and all these companies — by the way, likewise, China should start an investigation into the Bidens. Because what happened in China is just about as bad as what happened with Ukraine.”

He continued: “So I would say that President Zelensky, if it were me, I would recommend that they start an investigation into the Bidens. Because nobody has any doubt that they weren’t crooked. That was a crooked deal 100%.”

Climate Denial Thrives In D.C. Echo Chambers

October 3, 2019 at 10:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new study shows the tendency for Washington policymakers to not accept mainstream climate science is growing inside echo chambers and under President Trump.

Axios: “The research adds some quantitative heft to the notion that Trump, who regularly dismisses and mocks climate change, is having a tangible impact among America’s most influential policy experts working inside the beltway of Washington, D.C.”

“Echo chambers — the concept that people share views only with those with similar views — have formed relatively quickly among policy leaders around misinformation of climate science under the Trump administration.”

A new Public Policy Institute of California poll finds Elizabeth Warren leading with 23%, followed by Joe Biden at 22%, Bernie Sanders at 21%, Kamala Harris at 8% and Pete Buttigieg at 6%.

No other candidate is preferred by more than 3%.

Key finding: Among voters with a candidate preference, 53% would consider supporting another candidate.

Trump Is Going to Burn Down Everything

October 3, 2019 at 9:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rick Wilson: “In private, Republicans are in the deepest despair of the Trump era. They’ve got that hang-dog, dick-in-the-dirt fatalism of men destined to die in a meaningless battle in a pointless war. They’ve abandoned all pretense of recapturing the House, their political fortunes in the states are crashing and burning, and the stock-market bubble they kept up as a shield against the downsides of Trump—’but muh 401(k)!’—is popping.”

“You want to know why so few Republicans have held town-hall meetings since early 2017? Because Trump is the cancer they deny is consuming them from the inside out. They see the political grave markers of 42 of their GOP House colleagues—and several hundred down-ballot Republicans—booted from office since 2017 and know that outside of the deepest red enclaves, they’re salesmen for a brand no one is buying.”

“I have some bad news, Republicans. It never gets better. There is no daylight at the end of this tunnel. Trump is a suicide bomber, and you’ve strapped yourselves to him so tightly that when he explodes, you’re going out to meet the 72 porn stars of the Trumpian afterlife with him. (Spoiler alert: They all look like Ivanka.)”

Pelosi Says 2nd Term Could Cause ‘Irreparable Damage’

October 3, 2019 at 9:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi insisted congressional Democrats were obligated to push forward with their impeachment inquiry regardless of its political ramifications for the 2020 election — but also warned that a second term of Donald Trump’s presidency would wreak “irreparable damage” upon the country, Politico reports.

Said Pelosi: “I will say this: Having said all of that, separate from that, the re-election of Donald Trump would do irreparable damage to the United States. We have some serious repair and healing to do in our country for what he’s done so far. I’m not sure that two terms — it might be irreparable.”

Trump Wanted Border Guards to Have Bayonets

October 3, 2019 at 9:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump told aides last year he wanted U.S. forces with bayonets to block people from crossing into the United States across the Mexico border, one of several proposals he floated at moments of peak frustration with his inability to contain a migration surge,” the Washington Post reports.

Did Bernie Sanders Have a Heart Attack?

October 3, 2019 at 9:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Slate: “Based on the information his campaign has released, this scenario seems to be what happened to Bernie Sanders on Tuesday evening. Without a close look at Sanders’ medical chart, it’s impossible to make a definitive diagnosis, and I have not reviewed the details of his case other than what has been reported to the media by his campaign. But even the scant information we have—that he had stents inserted overnight following an acute cardiac episode—is enough to be able to say: This was very likely a heart attack.”

“I asked the Sanders’ campaign directly if they could confirm that this was or was not a heart attack. They declined to comment on the record. On Wednesday evening, the Wall Street Journal ran a story that originally stated a spokesperson for Sanders said the senator ‘didn’t suffer a heart attack,’ but that story was later updated to remove that assertion.”

First Read: “As long as he’s a presidential candidate, at age 78, the campaign owes the public more answers about his health situation.”

Unfit for Office

October 3, 2019 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

George Conway: “You don’t need to be a weatherman to know which way the wind blows, and you don’t need to be a mental-health professional to see that something’s very seriously off with Trump—particularly after nearly three years of watching his erratic and abnormal behavior in the White House. Questions about Trump’s psychological stability have mounted throughout his presidency. But those questions have been coming even more frequently amid a recent escalation in Trump’s bizarre behavior, as the pressures of his upcoming reelection campaign, a possibly deteriorating economy, and now a full-blown impeachment inquiry have mounted. And the questioners have included those who have worked most closely with him.”

“No president in recent memory—and likely no president ever—has prompted more discussion about his mental stability and connection with reality.”

“The president isn’t simply volatile and erratic, however—he’s also incapable of consistently telling the truth. Those who work closely with him, and who aren’t in denial, must deal with Trump’s lying about serious matters virtually every day.”
