Gabbard Clears Key Senate Hurdle

February 11, 2025 at 6:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senators voted to advance Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination to serve as director of national intelligence in a party-line vote Monday evening, setting the stage for a final confirmation vote later this week,” Politico reports.

“Having secured the support of 52 Senate Republicans, Gabbard, one of President Donald Trump’s most controversial Cabinet nominees, is on track to be confirmed as the nation’s top intelligence official in the coming days. Forty six Democrats in the chamber voted against Gabbard. Two senators were absent from the vote.”

Shutdown Fight Could Play Right Into Trump’s Hands

February 11, 2025 at 6:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rachel Bade: “The logic is straightforward enough: Republicans, after all, will need Democratic votes to keep the government open, given the Senate’s 60-vote threshold and House conservatives’ aversion to supporting any funding bill. Why not play a little hardball, the thinking goes, and try to get Trump and Musk to back off?”

“But having covered more than a few of these shutdown fights, I can say confidently that this isn’t the leverage point Democrats and much of Washington seem to think it is. Not only is this a battle Democrats probably can’t win, it’s one that could play right into Trump and Musk’s hands.”

No Vetting Could Allow Funds to Reach Terror Groups

February 11, 2025 at 6:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration’s dismantling of the US Agency for International Development and its sweeping freeze on foreign assistance has made it more difficult to track potential misuse of US taxpayer-funded humanitarian assistance, meaning it could end up unintentionally going to terrorist groups, according to a new report from the agency’s independent watchdog,” CNN reports.

“The USAID inspector general’s office’s conclusion appears to undermine President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s arguments that their moves to abolish the agency will curtail fraud and waste.”

Trump Dismantles the Public Integrity Guardrails

February 11, 2025 at 6:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the first three weeks of his administration, President Donald Trump has moved with brazen haste to dismantle the federal government’s public integrity guardrails that he frequently tested during his first term but now seems intent on removing entirely,” the AP reports.

“In a span of hours on Monday, word came that he had forced out leaders of offices responsible for government ethics and whistleblower complaints. And in a boon to corporations, he ordered a pause to enforcement of a decades-old law that prohibits American companies from bribing foreign governments to win business. All of that came on top of the earlier late-night purge of more than a dozen inspectors general who are tasked with rooting out waste, fraud and abuse at government agencies.”

“It’s all being done with a stop-me-if-you-dare defiance by a president who the first time around felt hemmed in by watchdogs, lawyers and judges tasked with affirming good government and fair play. Now, he seems determined to break those constraints once and for all in a historically unprecedented flex of executive power.”

Nancy Mace Takes to House Floor With Charges of Rape

February 10, 2025 at 10:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), “who in recent weeks has floated a run for governor, on Monday night accused her former fiancé and three other men of having drugged and raped her and other women, and of filming and taking lewd photographs of women and underage girls without their consent,” the New York Times reports.

“In a stunningly graphic speech on the House floor that had little precedent, Ms. Mace said the men, whom she named and displayed photographs of on a placard where lawmakers more typically display charts and graphs on policy issues, were involved in the ‘premeditated, calculated exploitation of innocent women and girls in my district.’”

Said Mace: “You’ve booked yourself a one-way ticket to hell. It is nonstop. There are no connections. So I and all of your victims can watch you rot into eternity.”

Trump Threatens to Cut Aid to Jordan and Egypt

February 10, 2025 at 8:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said on Monday that he could cut aid to Jordan and Egypt if they refused his demand to permanently take in most Palestinians from Gaza, substantially increasing the pressure on key allies in the region to back his audacious proposal to relocate the entire population of the territory in order to redevelop it,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “If they don’t agree, I would conceivably withhold aid.”

“Both Jordan and Egypt have rejected any suggestion that Palestinians be relocated to their countries.”

February 10, 2025 at 7:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department on Monday told federal prosecutors in New York to drop corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted in September and accused of being under illegal foreign influence and accepting bribes through campaign donations and luxury travel perks,” the Washington Post reports.

Senate Ready to Leap Frog House on Reconciliation

February 10, 2025 at 6:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pressure is building against Speaker Mike Johnson, as he scrambles to deliver on President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda, with the GOP-controlled Senate and conservative House Republican hardliners both pressing for their own proposals,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Despite pleas from Johnson, Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is preparing to mark up a budget resolution on Wednesday that includes more than $300 billion in new funding for the Pentagon and border security, as well as energy policy changes. The new funding would be offset with spending cuts elsewhere.”

“Graham’s plan, which is blessed by Senate Majority Leader John Thune, would mean a two-step reconciliation process.”

Said Graham, on X: “My dear friend Speaker Johnson is right. Like President Trump, I prefer ‘one big beautiful bill’ … That is my preference, but reality is something altogether different.”

Trump Announces Fresh Round of Tariffs

February 10, 2025 at 6:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump signed executive orders on Monday imposing 25-percent tariffs on imported steel and aluminum, the latest salvo in his ongoing effort to overhaul the U.S. trading relationship with the rest of the world,” the Washington Post reports.

“The president’s actions are designed to promote greater domestic steel industry production and employment. But they will increase costs for manufacturers that use the industrial metals to produce goods such as automobiles and appliances. Those higher costs are at odds with Trump’s repeated campaign promises to bring down the cost of living.”

February 10, 2025 at 5:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that if all hostages in Gaza are not released by 12 p.m. on Saturday, the ceasefire should be canceled and “let all hell break loose,” Axios reports.

Musk’s Net Worth Falls Below $400 Billion

February 10, 2025 at 5:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Elon Musk’s net worth fell below $400 billion for the first time in two months, dragged down by a double-digit slide in Tesla Inc.’s share price,” Bloomberg reports.

“The automaker’s stock has fallen 27% after hitting an all-time high in mid-December on hopes that Musk’s proximity to President Donald Trump would boost the company’s fortunes. Tesla shares and options make up more than 60% of Musk’s wealth, which peaked at $486.4 billion on Dec. 17 in the wake of Trump’s election.”

Trump to Order Crackdown on D.C. Crime

February 10, 2025 at 5:38 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump is expected to issue an executive order commanding federal agencies to pursue tougher penalties for both violent and petty crimes, clear homeless camps, and clean graffiti in the District of Columbia,” the Washington Post reports.

“The directives targeting a city Trump has often vilified could come in an executive order as early as this week and emphasize public safety and beautification of Washington.”

Trump Declines to Endorse Vance as His 2028 Successor

February 10, 2025 at 5:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told Fox News that it’s “too early” to endorse Vice President J.D. Vance as his Republican successor.

Said Trump: “No, but he’s very capable. I think you have a lot of very capable people… So far, I think he’s doing a fantastic job. It’s too early, we’re just starting.”

Republicans Privately Express Concern Over Elon Musk

February 10, 2025 at 5:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Bulwark: “A review of letters sent by Republican members of Congress to their constituents shows many lawmakers expressing caution, even concern, about the role Musk is playing.”

“Some members have pledged to voters that they will serve as a guardrail for DOGE. Others have expressed apprehension over the conflicts of interest that naturally result from the richest man on the planet—and a major government contractor—having such immense sway over federal spending. Even more have acknowledged fears that Musk may gain access to voters’ sensitive personal information.”

FBI Finds Secret JFK Assassination Records

February 10, 2025 at 5:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The FBI just discovered about 2,400 records tied to President Kennedy’s assassination that were never provided to a board tasked with reviewing and disclosing the documents,” Axios reports.

“The still-secret records are contained in 14,000 pages of documents the FBI found in a review triggered by President Trump’s Jan. 23 executive order demanding the release of all JFK assassination records.”

“The discovery — 61 years after Kennedy was killed in Dallas — follows decades of government reluctance to release all documents related to the assassination, which fueled a mountain of conspiracy theories.“

Trump Keeps Floating a Possible Third Term

February 10, 2025 at 4:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Just eight days after he won a second term, Mr. Trump — whose supporters attacked the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, in an effort to prevent Joe Biden’s victory from being certified — mused about whether he could have a third presidential term, which is barred by the Constitution.”

“Since then, he has floated the idea frequently. In public, he couches the notion of staying in office beyond two terms as a humorous aside. In private, Mr. Trump has told advisers that it is just one of his myriad diversions to grab attention and aggravate Democrats.”
