Auto Workers Strike Against GM

September 16, 2019 at 6:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than 49,000 members of the United Auto Workers walked off General Motors factory floors or set up picket lines early Monday as contract talks with the company deteriorated into a strike,” the AP reports.

“Workers shut down 33 manufacturing plants in nine states across the U.S., as well as 22 parts distribution warehouses. It wasn’t clear how long the walkout would last, with the union saying GM has budged little in months of talks while GM said it made substantial offers including higher wages and factory investments.”

Netanyahu Vows to Annex West Bank

September 16, 2019 at 6:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Monday to annex ‘all the settlements’ in the West Bank, including an enclave deep in the heart of the largest Palestinian city, in a last-ditch move that appeared aimed at shoring up nationalist support the day before a do-over election,” the AP reports.

“Locked in a razor tight race and with legal woes hanging over him, Netanyahu is fighting for his political survival. In the final weeks of his campaign he has been doling out hard-line promises meant to draw more voters to his Likud party and re-elect him in Tuesday’s unprecedented repeat vote.”

Democrats Take Hard Line On Background Checks

September 16, 2019 at 6:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer warned President Donald Trump on Sunday that any firearm legislation that falls short of universal background checks for gun sales ‘will not get the job done,’ complicating delicate negotiations between the president and a group of senators,” Politico reports.

“Trump has been discussing potential legislation with senators in both parties that would expand background checks but would not go as far as House-passed legislation that would apply them to all gun sales with limited exceptions. Trump issued a veto threat on the House’s background-checks bill earlier this year, and few Republicans in Congress support it.”

“But in a conversation with Trump on Sunday morning, the House speaker and Senate minority leader indicated to Trump that they were taking a much harder line than rank-and-file senators involved in the talks.”

Trump Says U.S. ‘Locked and Loaded’ After Attack

September 15, 2019 at 10:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted that the U.S. has “reason to believe that we know” who is responsible for an attack on a Saudi Arabian oil field and the country is “locked and loaded depending on verification” following the crippling strike, CNN reports.

Said Trump: “Saudi Arabia oil supply was attacked. There is reason to believe that we know the culprit, are locked and loaded depending on verification, but are waiting to hear from the Kingdom as to who they believe was the cause of this attack, and under what terms we would proceed!”

Not Too Late for Kamala Harris

September 15, 2019 at 10:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Leonhardt: “As the savvy political analyst Sean Trende wrote last week, she is the most natural politician in the field, and people are now underrating her chances. Last week, she had a good debate, from her opening statement directed at Trump to her stirring words about the dire peril of climate change — and our ability to overcome it.”

“The first primaries, remember, are still months away, and many people are only now starting to follow the race. Notably, a recent national poll found that fewer Democratic voters have formed an opinion about Harris than about her main rivals. The history of presidential campaigns offers the same lesson: When The New York Times ran a front-page story about the ‘mounting alarm’ among Obama’s supporters over his underdog campaign against Hillary Clinton, it was late October 2007.”

“Harris remains an important candidate because the Democratic field remains flawed. And if you see Trump as a threat to America’s interests — which he is — you should at this point be rooting for as many strong potential nominees as possible.”

Trump Campaign Thinks It Can Flip New Mexico

September 15, 2019 at 8:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At a Trump rally back in February in El Paso, Texas, the campaign saw an unexpected pattern in the attendee data — a large crowd of New Mexicans crossed the state line to be there,” Axios reports.

“Since then, New Mexico has become an unlikely target for the 2020 Trump campaign. It’s the state with the highest percentage of Hispanics and Latinos (about 1 in 2 residents), and it’s gone with Democrats in 6 of the last 7 general elections.”

New Mexico is not currently a Toss Up on the Electoral Vote Map.

Pelosi Will Target Mitch McConnell Next

September 15, 2019 at 8:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi will escalate her caucus’ anti-Mitch McConnell messaging this fall, testing a theory that this can be more effective than just continuing the party’s anti-Trump rhetoric,” Axios reports.

“Democrats are still divided over how much to focus on President Trump ahead of the 2020 elections — and they’re aware that “Trump fatigue” could mean that their attacks will bring diminishing returns.”

“Pelosi has relentlessly reminded her House colleagues that Democrats regained the majority in 2018 by focusing on the issues, not by bashing Trump.”

Sanders Shakes Up New Hampshire Campaign

September 15, 2019 at 8:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bernie Sanders “has replaced the New Hampshire state director of his presidential campaign after growing indignation from his fiercest supporters that their concerns about losing the first-in-the-nation primary states were being ignored,” Politico reports.

“More than 50 members from Sanders’ state steering committee applauded on Sunday afternoon when they heard that Joe Caiazzo had been reassigned to Massachusetts.”

Cheney Says World Is Safer Under Trump

September 15, 2019 at 12:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) said the world is “safer” and more stable because of President Trump’s foreign policy decisions, The Hill reports.

Said Cheney: “No question, the world is safer.l

She added: “We’re in a situation where American leadership has come back,” arguing that under former President Obama the military “did not get the resources it needed.”

Most Americans Want Action on Climate Change

September 15, 2019 at 11:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CBS News poll finds a majority of Americans think action needs to be taken right now to address climate change.

“Most consider it at least to be a serious problem — including more than a quarter who say it is a crisis. Seven in 10 think human activity contributes a lot or some to climate change, and most feel they have a personal responsibility to do something about it, although many say they cannot afford to.”

Trump Says Kavanaugh Should Sue for ‘Liable’

September 15, 2019 at 11:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump once again came to the defense of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “Brett Kavanaugh should start suing people for liable, or the Justice Department should come to his rescue.”

Approximately an hour after the original tweet, he sent out a new tweet with the correct spelling of the word “libel.”

Texas Lawmaker Pulls Endorsement from Castro

September 15, 2019 at 11:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Vicente Gonzalez (D-TX) “flipped his support from Julián Castro to Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, saying now is the time to narrow the 2020 field and unite as Democrats,” CNN reports.

“The switch of support comes days after Castro sharply criticized Biden — with an apparent jab at the former vice president’s memory — in a contentious moment dubbed ‘personal’ and ‘not cool’ by other candidates, but Gonzalez said that debate moment was not the reason behind his decision.”

Cameron Says Johnson Never Believed In Brexit

September 15, 2019 at 7:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“David Cameron has accused Boris Johnson of not believing in Brexit but backing it anyway during the referendum campaign on Britain’s EU membership to advance his political career,” Politico reports.

“In an extract from his forthcoming memoir, published in the Sunday Times, the former British prime minister ripped into the political motives of Johnson and Michael Gove, another leading Brexit campaigner who is now a Cabinet minister.”

New Sexual Misconduct Claim Against Kavanaugh

September 15, 2019 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two New York Times reporters say they’ve uncovered a previously unreported account of sexual misconduct allegedly carried out by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh when he was a student at Yale,” the HuffPost reports.

“In an op-ed for the Times, Robin Pogrebin and Kate Kelly said they learned of the alleged misconduct during a 10-month investigation of Kavanaugh’s life at prep-school and Yale, including the assault accusations, for their upcoming book, The Education of Brett Kavanaugh: An Investigation.”

“Max Stier, Kavanaugh’s classmate at Yale, told the reporters that he once saw Kavanaugh with his pants down while his friends pushed his penis into the hands of a female student during a dorm party.”

Trump Is Seriously, Frighteningly Unstable

September 15, 2019 at 7:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Robert Reich: “I think we have to face the truth that no one seems to want to admit. This is no longer a case of excessive narcissism or grandiosity. We’re not simply dealing with an unusually large ego.”

“The president of the United States is seriously, frighteningly, dangerously unstable. And he’s getting worse by the day.”

“Such a person in the Oval Office can do serious damage.”

“What to do? We can vote him out of office in 14 months’ time. But he could end the world in seven and a half seconds.”

Holder Predicted Trump Will Be Prosecuted

September 14, 2019 at 5:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Attorney General Eric Holder predicted President Trump “may be prosecuted after his presidency if he doesn’t first face impeachment proceedings while in office — but warned of the possible risks to the nation,” CNN reports.

Said Holder: “It would seem to me that the next attorney general, the next president is going to have to make a determination.”

He added: “Yes, I think there is a potential cost to the nation by putting on trial a former president, and that ought to at least be a part of the calculus that goes into the determination that has to be made by the next attorney general.”
