Autopsy Found Broken Bones In Epstein’s Neck

August 14, 2019 at 11:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An autopsy found that financier Jeffrey Epstein sustained multiple breaks in his neck bones, according to two people familiar with the findings, deepening the mystery about the circumstances around his death,” the Washington Post reports.

“Among the bones broken in Epstein’s neck was the hyoid bone, which in men is near the Adam’s apple. Such breaks can occur in those who hang themselves, particularly if they are older… But they are more common in victims of homicide by strangulation.”

“The details add to the bizarre circumstances surrounding Epstein’s death, which have launched a wave of questions and conspiracy theories about how he could have died in federal custody. Even President Trump has egged on speculation, without evidence, that Epstein — whose alleged victims say they were pushed to have sex with his powerful and celebrity friends — might have been killed to keep him from spilling the secrets of others.”

Trump’s Gun Control Discussions Still Theoretical

August 14, 2019 at 10:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “What President Trump has not done yet is the kind of arm-twisting of Republican senators wary of gun control legislation that will be necessary to force a bill through Congress, according to interviews with White House officials and congressional aides. He has shown no interest so far in a major address to ensure that public opinion is behind such a move. And he and his aides have yet to settle on what he will actually propose.”

“But they have commissioned a poll through his campaign to assess where his supporters are on different gun control measures, and they will have the results by September, when the Senate returns from summer recess, according to three people briefed on the plans.”

“Until that happens, the discussion inside the White House about what, if anything, to do about new gun measures — and Senator Mitch McConnell, the majority leader, has warned that it will have to be the president who calls Republicans to action — is largely theoretical.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

August 14, 2019 at 10:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“He’s mentally declining. He’s losing his step here in terms of how he’s thinking about human beings, and he’s creating a corrosive, socially dividing cancer in the country that’s not worth the economics.”

— Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci, quoted by the Washington Post, on President Trump.

Big Majority Supports Gun Background Checks

August 14, 2019 at 6:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the wake of two mass shootings, overwhelming and bipartisan majorities of voters favor background checks on gun buyers and taking guns from people who are a danger to themselves or others,” according to the latest Fox News Poll.

“Two-thirds also support a ban on ‘assault weapons,’ although that majority is largely driven by Democrats.”

Meanwhile, President Trump’s job ratings are increasingly negative in the shooting aftermath, as 59% say Trump is “tearing the country apart,” compared to 31% who feel he’s “drawing the country together.”

Trump Won’t Back Hong Kong Protesters

August 14, 2019 at 5:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s top aides are urging him to back Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protesters, but the president isn’t interested, Politico reports.

“As the protests have intensified over the past month, the president has remained determined to keep China’s human rights abuses from complicating his trade negotiations, going so far as to make a unilateral concession to Xi in the run-up to the G-20 Summit in June.”

Pelosi Warns on U.S.-British Trade Pact

August 14, 2019 at 5:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Speaker Nancy Pelosi warned that there is no chance the U.S. Congress would approve a planned U.S.-British trade deal if Britain’s exit from the European Union undermines the landmark 1998 Good Friday peace agreement for Northern Ireland,” Reuters reports.

“The Good Friday agreement, which helped end three decades of violence in Northern Ireland, dismantled all physical border infrastructure between EU member Ireland and Northern Ireland, a province of Britain, guaranteeing that people and goods on either side can move freely.”

Trump Blames Fed for Slowing Economy

August 14, 2019 at 4:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump blamed the Federal Reserve for mounting fears about a slowing U.S. economy as he defended his administration’s trade war with China, CNBC reports.

In a pair of tweets, the president argued the central bank and its “clueless” Chair Jay Powell have dragged on the U.S. economy. He also blamed the Fed for the yield on the 2-year U.S. Treasury moving higher than the yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury — an indicator of a possible recession that contributed to major U.S. stock indexes dropping about 3% on Wednesday.

Tweeted Trump: “CRAZY INVERTED YIELD CURVE! We should easily be reaping big Rewards & Gains, but the Fed is holding us back. We will Win!”

Trump also claimed “we are winning, big time” in his administration’s trade conflict with China but that “our problem is with the Fed.”

Trump Keeps Insisting China Is Paying Tariffs

August 14, 2019 at 3:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jim Tankersley: “President Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports are forcing Americans to pay more for everyday products. Many economists have shown this. If you look at the appropriate inflation data, like the rising price of imported home furnishings, you can see the effect for yourself.”

“Mr. Trump still does not see it — he continues to claim, incorrectly, that China alone is bearing the costs of his trade war with Beijing. But he admitted at least the possibility that he could be wrong about that on Tuesday, conceding that Americans could start paying more for many products if his latest round of tariffs went through as planned.”

Trump Struggles With an Asia in Crisis

August 14, 2019 at 3:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“For two and a half years, President Trump has said he is finally doing in Asia what he asserts his predecessor, Barack Obama, failed to achieve with a strategic pivot: strengthen American influence and rally partners to push back against China,” the New York Times reports.

“But as violence escalates and old animosities are rekindled across Asia, Washington has chosen inaction, and governments are ignoring the Trump administration’s mild admonitions and calls for calm. Whether it is the internal battles in India and Hong Kong or the rivalry between two American allies, Japan and South Korea, Mr. Trump and his advisers are staying on the sidelines.”

“The inability or unwillingness of Washington to help defuse the flash points is one of the clearest signs yet of the erosion of American power and global influence under Mr. Trump, who has stuck to his ‘America First’ idea of disengagement, analysts say.”

Pelosi Calls McConnell ‘Moscow Mitch’

August 14, 2019 at 3:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) “Moscow Mitch” while attacking him for blocking House Democrats’ legislation, including election security measures, The Hill reports.

Said Pelosi: “We all want to invest in building our democracy and saving it from any enemies, foreign and domestic We’ve sent our legislation to the Senate. Moscow Mitch says that he is the Grim Reaper. Imagine describing yourself as the Grim Reaper, that he’s going to bury all this legislation. Well, we have news for him. All this legislation is alive and well in the general public.”

Bennet Says Brother Was ‘Unenthusiastic’ About Bid

August 14, 2019 at 3:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Michael Bennet (D-CO) feels “terrible” his brother James, the editorial page editor of the New York Times, recused himself from the paper’s opinion coverage of the 2020 election because of Bennet’s run for president, BuzzFeed News reports.

Bennet said he talked with his brother about it for months before announcing his candidacy: “He was unenthusiastic about the prospect of my running.”

Team Trump Mangles Message to Iran

August 14, 2019 at 2:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration keeps sending conflicting and contradictory messages to Iran about its terms for new negotiations, multiple U.S and European officials tell the Daily Beast. And the ensuing chaos has vexed the president, complicated diplomatic efforts for American allies abroad, and utterly baffled policymakers at home.”

“For several months, the United States has been actively attempting to pass messages, via allies, to the Iranians in an effort to move closer to beginning formal diplomatic talks with Tehran. However, diverging opinions within the Trump administration are foiling the nascent diplomatic process.”

Haberman Had to Pay Back Her Book Advance

August 14, 2019 at 2:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A much-anticipated book on the Trump White House by Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush “is no longer happening,” according to BuzzFeed News.

“Thrush was kicked off the project by the publisher after being accused of sexual misconduct… And he got to keep the portion of the book advance he had received because Random House dropped him from the project.”

“Haberman, however, paid a price. According to two sources familiar with the situation, after a period of limbo and attempts to salvage the project, she decided not to do the book after losing her writing partner — and then had to give her share of the advance back to the publisher.”

King Says Humanity Exists Because of Rape and Incest

August 14, 2019 at 2:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) said that humanity might not exist if not for rape and incest throughout human history, the Des Moines Register reports.

Said King: “What if we went back through all the family trees and just pulled out anyone who was a product of rape or incest? Would there be any population of the world left if we did that? Considering all the wars and all the rapes and pillages that happened throughout all these different nations, I know that I can’t say that I was not a part of a product of that.”

He the defended conception that happened in bad circumstances: “It’s not the baby’s fault for the sin of the father, or of the mother.”
