Biden Looks to Expand Staff

March 5, 2020 at 9:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden, emboldened by his unexpectedly strong Super Tuesday performance and flush with cash, is moving to hire new aides who he hopes can quickly help him secure the Democratic presidential nomination and then guide him through the general election,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Biden is looking to broaden his communications and political teams and reorder some of the senior-most roles in the operation, according to multiple people familiar with the campaign’s outreach.”

“Most significantly, Mr. Biden’s advisers are in discussions with Jennifer O’Malley Dillon, who last year managed Beto O’Rourke’s presidential bid, to take a senior role alongside Anita Dunn, the chief strategist.”

Judge Demands Unredacted Mueller Report

March 5, 2020 at 5:35 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge on Thursday ordered the Department of Justice to hand over to him a copy of the unredacted Mueller report and accused Attorney General William Barr of misrepresenting its findings in the days before it was submitted to Congress last year,” The Hill reports.

New York Times: “The judge ordered the Justice Department to privately show him the portions of the report that were censored in the public version so he could independently verify the justifications.”

Wrote Judge Reggie Walton: “It would be disingenuous for the court to conclude that the redactions of the Mueller Report pursuant to the FOIA are not tainted by Attorney General Barr’s actions and representations.”

March 5, 2020 at 5:21 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dave Levinthal: “The wealthiest presidential candidate in history skated through his short and wild campaign without ever publicly revealing his assets — as federal law mandates.”

Clinton Says Warren’s Campaign Hurt By Sexism

March 5, 2020 at 4:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Hillary Clinton reflected on Elizabeth Warren’s campaign in a Vanity Fair interview admitting that “she has been an incredible candidate” — who, like Amy Klobuchar and Kamala Harris, was subjected to the realities of misogyny in politics.

Said Clinton: “I think we made some progress, but there still was a lot of the unconscious bias and the gendered language that has been used around the women candidates. I think it affected all of the women that ran.”

March 5, 2020 at 4:16 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Reuters/Ipsos poll finds Joe Biden leading Bernie Sanders in the Democratic presidential primary race by ten points, 55% to 45%.

March 5, 2020 at 3:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Bloomberg to Form Super PAC to Defeat Trump

March 5, 2020 at 2:56 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Michael Bloomberg has decided to form a new independent expenditure campaign that will absorb hundreds of his presidential campaign staff in six swing states to work to elect the Democratic nominee this fall,” the Washington Post reports.

“The new group, with a name that is still undisclosed because its trademark application is in process, would also be a vehicle for Bloomberg to spend money on advertising to attack President Trump and support the Democratic nominee.”

The battleground states: Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Arizona, Florida and North Carolina. The consensus electoral map shows all of these states as Toss Ups, with the exception of Michigan which leans blue.

Biden Victories Unleash Money

March 5, 2020 at 2:18 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Support for Biden from the Democratic establishment abruptly materialized Wednesday as influential donors lined up behind the former vice president following his romp through 10 of the 14 contests… In Los Angeles, a pricey Biden event suddenly sold out on Tuesday night. In Florida, a prominent fundraiser received an outpouring of phone calls from donors who now want to help Biden clinch the Democratic nomination.”

“Others who hadn’t been in touch with the campaign were nonetheless laying the groundwork for big-dollar events. Bryan Rafanelli, a major Democratic donor in Boston who was one of Pete Buttigieg’s top fundraisers, was flooded with requests to host a gathering after announcing his support for Biden on social media… Democratic megadonor Susie Tompkins Buell, who also backed Buttigieg before he dropped out, said in a text message that she now supports Biden and is open to hosting an event.”

Romney Says Hunter Biden Probe ‘Appears Political’

March 5, 2020 at 1:24 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT) said that a GOP investigation into Hunter Biden and Ukrainian gas company Burisma “appears political,” The Hill reports.

Said Romney: “There’s no question but that the appearance of looking into Burisma and Hunter Biden appears political, and I think people are tired of these kind of political investigations.”

Netanyahu Comes Up Short Again

March 5, 2020 at 1:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“With all votes counted, Israel’s election results indicate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud is the largest party – but the right-wing bloc has failed to secure a 61-seat majority to form a government. Benny Gantz’s Kahol Lavan party trails behind the Likud by several seats,” Haaretz reports.

The result marks no end in sight for political deadlock.

Meanwhile, the Jerusalem Post reports Netanyahu suffered another blow “when Yisrael Beytenu leader Avigdor Liberman endorsed Blue and White leader Benny Gantz’s efforts to pass a law that would prevent an indicted MK from forming a government.”

Sanders Cancels Rally In Mississippi

March 5, 2020 at 1:06 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sen. Bernie Sanders has canceled a planned rally in Jackson, Mississippi, and will instead travel to Michigan on Friday, a striking indication that his presidential campaign is shifting its focus to the Midwest and largely ceding another Southern state to Joe Biden,” the New York Times reports.

“The change in plans suggests that Mr. Sanders will not challenge Mr. Biden for the support of black voters in the South — a vital base in the Democratic Party — and is instead going all-in on the Midwest as he tries to compete for the overlapping slice of the electorate made up of working-class voters.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

March 5, 2020 at 12:49 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“One of the hardest parts of this is… all those little girls who are going to have to wait four more years. That’s gonna be hard.”

— Sen. Elizabeth Warren, announcing she is suspending her presidential campaign.

Warren Won’t Endorse Today

March 5, 2020 at 12:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who suspended her presidential campaign earlier today, told reporters she would not endorse another candidate yet.

Joe Biden praised her in a tweet: “Senator Warren is the fiercest of fighters for middle class families. Her work in Washington, in Massachusetts, and on the campaign trail has made a real difference in people’s lives. We needed her voice in this race, and we need her continued work in the Senate.”

Bernie Sanders added his praise: “Elizabeth Warren has taken on the most powerful corporate interests because she cares about those who have been left behind. Without her, the progressive movement would not be nearly as strong as it is today. I know that she’ll stay in this fight and we are grateful that she will.”

An Economic Shock Akin to a World War

March 5, 2020 at 11:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ambrose Evans-Pritchard: “We may now be an even more dangerous monetary world. The Fed is closer to policy exhaustion without having achieved anything. It has just two or three cuts left before it hits the floor, given that negative rates in the US are ruled out by the structure of the money market industry.”

“In fairness, the Powell Fed was damned if it did, and damned if it didn’t. The coronavirus amounts to an economic ‘sudden stop’ across the northern hemisphere, likely to hit regions making up 70% of global GDP by mid-March.”

“It is an exogenous shock akin to the outbreak of world war —  a ‘once in 100 years catastrophic event’ in the words of Ray Dalio from the giant hedge fund Bridgewater — and it is colliding with global debt ratios at an all-time high of 322pc of GDP, and doing so at a vulnerable point in the business cycle.”
