Trump Finally Has an Adversary that Can Fight Back

January 10, 2019 at 10:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Molly Ball: “A new year has dawned in Washington, and this is what it looks like: a partial government shutdown in its third week; a new Congress sworn in only to sit on its hands; an emboldened House Speaker Nancy Pelosi refusing to cede an inch; and an angry President Trump abandoning negotiations to take to television and make the case for crisis measures.”

“But step back from the sordid details, and you could hardly get a more accurate tableau of America’s new political reality: a nonfunctioning federal government whose leaders, each insisting the stakes are too high to budge, have retreated to their corners. At the center of the drama are the two towering figures whose clash will define the next biennium: Trump and Pelosi, the yang and yin of a divided America, two powerful leaders with their credibility on the line, both convinced they hold the winning hand.”

“Neither can afford to lose…. Trump, true to his tendencies, acts on impulse, prevaricates, shreds norms and takes unilateral actions of questionable legality. He stumbles into authoritarianism, not out of calculation but out of machismo. Meanwhile, the Speaker, true to her tendencies, unites her wayward party behind a carefully chosen, logical course of action, but her best-laid plans may still be no match for an extraordinary moment. Ultimately, it is fitting that Trump, avatar of chaos, should face off against Pelosi, master of rules. And there’s no end in sight for the clash of these two titanic figures.”

Trump’s Border Wall Could Cost Him In 2020

January 10, 2019 at 10:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “Politically, the showdown over the shutdown demonstrates how much more Trump prioritizes energizing and mobilizing his passionate base, often with messages that appeal to anxiety about demographic and cultural change, over broadening his support toward anything that approaches a majority of the country. It sends the same message about his priorities in executing his office. Trump makes no pretense of governing as president of the entire nation. Instead, he governs as the champion of his slice of America against all the forces in the country his supporters dislike or distrust—an instinct he displayed again this week with his latest threats to cut off disaster-relief funding for California.”

“For a president to consistently steer his governing agenda and political messaging toward a demonstrable minority of the country is, to put it mildly, a novel strategy.”

Trump Says He’s Likely to Declare Emergency on Border

January 10, 2019 at 10:10 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said he “was likely to declare a national emergency to secure funds for his long-sought wall along the U.S. southern border if he cannot reach an agreement with Democrats in Congress to provide the money,” Reuters reports.

“If Trump were to declare an emergency in an effort to redirect funds Congress has approved for other purposes, it likely would lead to quick challenges in the courts.”

How Trump Plans to Meddle In the Democratic Primaries

January 10, 2019 at 10:02 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

BuzzFeed News: “The pair of outside groups tied closely to President Donald Trump has retained the top Republican opposition group in an effort to smother Democrats seeking to challenge him — and perhaps even help pick his 2020 challenger.”

“The early move is part of Trump and his allies’ plan to dominate the Democratic presidential primary and push to have the nominating contest play out on their terms, especially since Trump himself has been uncharacteristically quiet in the new year about top Democratic White House hopefuls, preoccupied with the partial government shutdown and his push for a border wall.”

Quote of the Day

January 10, 2019 at 9:59 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White nationalist, white supremacist, Western civilization — how did that language become offensive?”

— Rep. Steve King (R-IA), quoted by the New York Times.

The Shutdown Is About Pain, Not Gain

January 10, 2019 at 9:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “With the partial government shutdown now nearly assured to be the longest in modern political history, we’re still at a standstill. But rather than finding a way to compromise their way out of the mess, it’s starting to look like both sides are simply calculating how much more pain they can withstand.”

“But if the question is who can withstand more pain when it comes to political pressure and public opinion, all the signs we’ve seen (polling on the shutdown/wall, the midterm scoreboard, Trump approval), point to Democrats having the upper hand.”

‘Electoral Coup’ Charged In Congo Election

January 10, 2019 at 9:21 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Felix Tshisekedi has won DR Congo’s presidential election, the BBC reports.

“The announcement, made overnight, sparked accusations of an ‘electoral coup’ from runner-up Martin Fayulu.”

“If confirmed, Mr Tshisekedi will be the first opposition challenger to win since the DR Congo gained independence in 1960. Current President Joseph Kabila is stepping down after 18 years in office.”

Trump Advised by Hannity and Dobbs on Wall Strategy

January 10, 2019 at 9:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “In the days before his Oval Office address on Tuesday night, Donald Trump leaned on a number of advisers on how to navigate the government shutdown he’d waged over funding for his border wall. The list included immigration hardliners Fox News host Sean Hannity and Fox Business star Lou Dobbs, both of whom, according to two sources familiar with the conversations, had a clear message for the president: push forward for the wall funding and break the Democrats’ will.”

Why Trump Lies

January 10, 2019 at 8:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stephen Grosz: “Most of us lie to avoid causing painful feelings in others, and ourselves… Trump’s lying is different. It’s not just a departure from the norms of the presidency — it’s a departure from the norm.”

“There are so many examples — The Washington Post’s Fact Checker estimates that during the two years of his presidency, Trump has told some 7,600 lies — but let this one suffice. On Boxing Day last year, during an unannounced visit to Iraq, Trump spoke to US troops about a pay rise. “I got you a big one. I got you a big one.” He continued, “They said: ‘You know, we could make it smaller. We could make it 3 per cent. We could make it 2 per cent. We could make it 4 per cent.’ I said: ‘No. Make it 10 per cent. Make it more than 10 per cent’.” The future pay rise is 2.6 per cent.”

“Think about what is happening here: a lie — easily discredited — is being made, with complete shamelessness, to people most of us would regard as heroes. When he told the troops about the pay rise, they must have gone wild. For the briefest moment, Trump will have been applauded, celebrated — but then what? How can someone be so oblivious to the consequences of deceit?”

Tests Showed Border Wall Could Be Sawed Through

January 10, 2019 at 8:11 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “has repeatedly advocated for a steel slat design for his border wall, which he described as ‘absolutely critical to border security’ in his Oval Office address to the nation Tuesday. But Department of Homeland Security testing of a steel slat prototype proved it could be cut through with a saw,” NBC News reports.

“A photo exclusively obtained by NBC News shows the results of the test after experts from the Marine Corps were instructed to attempt to destroy the barriers with common tools.”

Flashback Quote of the Day

January 10, 2019 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Don’t give up. Don’t allow it to happen. If there’s a concrete wall in front of you, go through it. Go over it. Go around it. But get to the other side of that wall.”

— Donald Trump, in a 2004 video clip aired on the Daily Show.

Kamala Harris Will Run for President

January 10, 2019 at 7:30 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kamala Harris has decided to seek the 2020 Democratic nomination for president, sources close to her told KCBS Radio.

She’ll announce her candidacy on or around Martin Luther King Day, probably at a campaign rally in Oakland.”

The 5 Key Constituencies of the Democratic Primary

January 10, 2019 at 7:20 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Nate Silver sees five key groups of Democratic voters that matter in the 2020 Democratic primary:

  1. Party Loyalists
  2. The Left
  3. Millennials and Friends
  4. Black voters
  5. Hispanic voters (sometimes in combination with Asian voters)

“You’ll notice that these groups aren’t mutually exclusive… So rather than thinking about ‘lanes,’ we’re taking a more pluralistic approach with the Democrats. Candidates don’t have to pick any one group; rather, their goal is to build a majority coalition from voters in (at least) three out of the five groups. There are a lot of ways to do this: If you’re choosing any three from among the five groups, there are 10 possible combinations to pick from,2 and all of them plausibly form winning coalitions.”

“The other difference from how we handled the Republicans four years ago is that, with the exception of The Left, none of these groups are explicitly ideological in nature.”

Doug Jones Seeks Inquiry Into Misinformation Efforts

January 10, 2019 at 7:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Jones, the Democrat who was an unwitting beneficiary of misinformation tactics during a special election in Alabama in 2017, asked the Federal Election Commission on Wednesday to investigate the episodes… The overall effort, which cost $100,000, was underwritten through an intermediary by Reid Hoffman, a co-founder of LinkedIn.”

Said Jones: “Such deceptive tactics have no place in American politics and must be repudiated by those involved in our political system.”

Rick Scott Blindsides DeSantis on His Way Out

January 10, 2019 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Tensions between the old governor and the new governor had been simmering under the surface for more than a month, but it burst into public view Tuesday after Scott abruptly left his successor’s inauguration ceremony, leading DeSantis to ad lib the parts of his speech in which he planned to personally thank Scott.”

“DeSantis’ team knew Scott would need to leave the ceremony at some point to attend his own Senate swearing in ceremony in Washington but were surprised when the former governor didn’t stay for the speech. DeSantis loyalists were already miffed that Scott’s political committee decided to throw a ball in Washington to celebrate his installation in the U.S. Senate that overlapped with the traditional inaugural celebration for the governor in Tallahassee.”

“Those slights followed two other perceived insults Friday, when the governor made more than 70 appointments without consulting DeSantis.”

Trump’s Only Way Out

January 10, 2019 at 6:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “There is an increasing recognition in the White House and among his most important allies on Capitol Hill that the only way for President Trump to get movement on his border wall is to figure out a way to build the barrier on his own. He thinks he has options — national emergency, other executive action — but it’s almost time to put a nail in the coffin of his congressional efforts.”

There is no deal with Dems to be had… All available public and private evidence tells us Trump’s talks with Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer are at a complete impasse, despite what some of his aides and allies seem to tell him. (People also convinced the president that he would have more leverage in January when Dems took the House!)”

“Trump is running up against a Democratic House that is doing exactly what it said it would do: block his wall. And he’s not going to split Schumer and Pelosi. There is no space between the two leaders on this issue.”

Washington Post: “Trump is so far flunking the biggest test of his dealmaking skills as president, learning the hard way that governing in a divided Washington is not remotely like running the Trump Organization or hosting The Apprentice.”

Another Obstacle for Trump’s Border Wall

January 10, 2019 at 6:37 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “The federal government has started surveying land along the border in Texas and announced plans to start construction next month. Rather than surrender their land, some property owners are digging in, vowing to reject buyout offers and preparing to fight the administration in court.”
