An Uphill Climb for Trump In 2020

August 23, 2019 at 10:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Charlie Cook: “Last year, Democrats won the national congressional vote by 8.6 percentage points, with Democratic candidates on average running 6 points ahead of Hillary Clinton’s 2016 performance in their respective districts. Today, the RealClearPolitics average of national polls shows Democrats ahead on the generic congressional ballot by 8 points. It’s reasonable to conclude that the playing field remains tilted in favor of Democrats.”

“Based on the level of interest in the upcoming election, turnout is likely to be very high, perhaps the highest presidential-year turnout in modern history. In 2016, turnout was 60%, roughly comparable to the last few election cycles. But last year’s midterms had the highest turnout since 1914. When turnout is very high, the electorate is more likely to resemble the universe of all registered voters. Indeed, last year’s midterm polling was dead on; with the exception of the Florida governor race, general-election upsets in statewide races were hard to come by, and the national popular vote for the House was only six-tenths of a percentage point off of the RCP average of major national polls.”

“Of course, a lot can and will happen over the next 15 months, and things can certainly change. But at this point, this looks to be an uphill climb for the president’s reelection.”

Monopoly Socialism

August 23, 2019 at 10:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Just out: Monopoly Socialism, the board game.

Rutger professor Nick Kapur offers a devastating critique, noting the player tokens include a typewriter, an old-timey phone, a pocket watch, a phonograph, and a CRT television set, presumably because “socialism” is so incredibly outdated?

“There are also tons of references to health food and veganism, despite the lack of any clear connection to socialism, apparently because what they share in common is that they are odious things that are fun to mock.”

Trump’s China Bind

August 23, 2019 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sources close to President Trump tell Axios that the White House is in a China bind: A trade deal with China is ‘tough to improbable’ in this deteriorating environment, with escalating security tensions between Washington and Beijing.”

“The biggest tool Trump has to pump the economy and the markets is a trade deal with China. But if anything, senior administration officials have turned harder against China in recent weeks.”

Quote of the Day

August 23, 2019 at 10:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think it’s evident that this is now a three-way race between Biden, Warren and Sanders, and really it’s a debate about how far left the party should go.”

— Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), quoted by the New York Times, on dropping out of the 2020 presidential race.

A Turbulent Twenty Years In Politics

August 23, 2019 at 9:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “As political observer Bruce Mehlman notes, eight of the last 10 election cycles — from 2000 to 2018 — have resulted in a change of party control in the House, Senate or White House.”

“Compare that with 1980 to 1998, when the country saw just four elections cycles when control flipped. Or 1960 to 1978, when power changed hands just in three cycles. In fact, you have to go back to 1946 to 1954 (post-WWII, Cold War, McCarthyism) or the 1910s (WWI, Russian Revolution) to see as much change in control of Congress or the presidency.”

“So due to our increasingly divided politics and the chaotic events over the last 20 years, American voters have been getting a lot of change.”

“The question we have: Are they constantly craving that change? Or are they constantly expressing their dissatisfaction with the way things are — no matter who controls the White House and Congress?”

Seth Moulton Ends Presidential Bid

August 23, 2019 at 9:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Rep. Seth Moulton (D-MA), a Harvard-educated Marine veteran who struggled to gain traction in a crowded Democratic presidential field, announced Friday that he would leave the campaign, making him the third candidate to depart the race this week,” the Washington Post reports.

Moulton said that he would instead seek reelection.

Trump Says He’ll ‘Find a Way to Win’

August 23, 2019 at 8:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted that “the Democrat Party” and “the Fake News Media” are saying a recession is on the way in an effort to hurt his reelection chances next year.

Said Trump: “They are willing to lose their wealth, or a big part of it, just for the possibility of winning the Election. But it won’t work because I always find a way to win, especially for the people!”

City Council Candidate Wants to Keep Community White

August 23, 2019 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A Michigan city council candidate shocked a public forum when she said she wants to keep “Marysville a white community as much as possible,” the Port Huron Times Herald reports.

Jean Cramer went on to state that she would not like “foreign born” people to settle in Marysville. She said that she’s not “against blacks” but believes married couples “need to be the same race.”

China Hits Back at Trump with More Tariffs

August 23, 2019 at 8:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“China announced that it will impose additional tariffs on a total of $75 billion of U.S. goods in retaliation for President Trump’s latest planned levies on Chinese imports,” Bloomberg reports.

“Some of the countermeasures will take effect starting Sept. 1, while the rest will come into effect from Dec. 15, according to the announcement from the Ministry of Commerce. This mirrors the timetable the U.S. has laid out for 10% tariffs on nearly $300 billion of Chinese shipments.”

Inside the Breakdown of the GOP’s Moderate Wing

August 23, 2019 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NPR: “This previously unreported account highlights a major breakdown within the centrist wing of the GOP in the wake of the 2018 midterms and exposes ongoing concern that the infrastructure won’t be there to help recruit and win in swing districts in 2020.”

Trump Promises To Cut Deficit After the Election

August 23, 2019 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “We learned this week that the deficit is rising faster than the Congressional Budget Office previously predicted and that it could hit $1 trillion as soon as this year. The GOP’s tax cuts haven’t created the growth it promised, which means less revenue is coming in to the federal government. Combine that with spending hikes, and the president who said he would not just balance the budget but also eliminate the entire national debt is on a very fiscally unconservative trajectory toward a massive broken promise.”

“Not to worry, though; he can just get around to fixing it after he wins reelection.”

“That’s the constant refrain emanating from the White House and GOP circles. Repeatedly, internal leaks and GOP lawmakers have suggested President Trump could get serious about this come January 2021.”

Kamala’s Rivals Seize on Health Care Stumbles

August 23, 2019 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The California Democrat is still struggling to rebut attacks from her chief rivals who are poking holes in [her plan’s] specifics and accusing Harris of putting political calculation before true conviction… Harris’ universal coverage plan has been praised by more than a dozen health policy wonks and former Obama administration officials … But politically, it’s been a muddle….”

“For Harris, the health care morass is also threatening to become an ominous symbol for why, after her surge following the first debate, she’s fallen back since early July to where she started. She now polls closer to Pete Buttigieg and Beto O’Rourke than Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. … But the Democratic infighting isn’t likely to subside anytime soon. And Harris isn’t the only candidate facing questions about her health plan.”

Trump Keeps Doubling Down on Bad Ideas

August 22, 2019 at 10:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Catherine Rampell: “There are lots of reasons to worry about how President Trump would handle a recession, should we tip into one. There’s his incompetent economic team. Or the limited fiscal policy tools at his disposal, given that Republicans already spent nearly $2 trillion on tax cuts. Or his efforts to discredit the Federal Reserve just when we’ll need it most.”

“One underrated concern: Trump’s tendency to double down on stupid and destructive ideas, despite — perhaps because of? — overwhelming evidence of their stupidity and destructiveness.”

Congressman Ducks Questions About Resigning

August 22, 2019 at 9:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Steve Watkins (R-KS) “declined to answer news reporters’ questions at a campaign event Thursday amid a flurry of bipartisan speculation his career in Congress could come to an abrupt end after eight months in office,” the Topeka Capital-Journal reports.

“Instead, he bolted into a waiting vehicle and sped away.”

“Republicans in Kansas and Washington, D.C., were pressuring Watkins to step down, but the reason for the possible resignation wasn’t certain.”

Trump Privately Warned About Economic Slowdown

August 22, 2019 at 9:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Top White House advisers notified President Trump earlier this month that some internal forecasts showed that the economy could slow markedly over the next year, stopping short of a recession but complicating his path to reelection in 2020,” the Washington Post reports.

“The private forecast, one of several delivered to Trump and described by three people familiar with the briefing, contrasts sharply with the triumphant rhetoric the president and his surrogates have repeatedly used to describe the economy.”

“Even as his aides warn of a business climate at risk of faltering, the president has been portraying the economy to the public as ‘phenomenal’ and ‘incredible.’ He has told aides that he thinks he can convince Americans that the economy is vibrant and unrattled through a public messaging campaign. But the internal and external warnings that the economy could slip have contributed to a muddled and often contradictory message.”

Justice Department Sent Racist Link to Immigration Judges

August 22, 2019 at 4:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An email sent from the Justice Department to all immigration court employees this week included a link to an article posted on a white nationalist website that ‘directly attacks sitting immigration judges with racial and ethnically tinged slurs,'” BuzzFeed News reports.

“The briefings are sent to court employees every weekday and include links to various immigration news items.”
