Bonus Quote of the Day

July 16, 2019 at 4:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There are no more good TV shows on like ‘Gunsmoke,’ ‘Bonanza,’ ‘The Virginian,’ ‘Andy Griffith,’ ‘I Love Lucy.’ We don’t have those shows anymore. We’re too interested in homosexual activities. We’re too interested in seeing how this family’s finding a way to mess on this family or to see how people are trying to date on TV, or having wife-swapping on TV. That’s what we watch. When we push back against that, and we quit allowing it to be in our homes – that’s how those changes have occurred because we’ve allowed them to slowly but surely come into our lives.”

— Alabama Secretary of State John Merrill (R), quoted by Yellowhammer News, on the need to change popular culture.

Ex-Trump Aide Admits to Hiring Prostitutes

July 16, 2019 at 3:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republican operative Jason Miller, the former communications chief for the Trump campaign and transition team, said he hired numerous prostitutes and visited ‘hand job’ massage parlors as recently as a few months ago in a new videotaped deposition,” Mediaite reports.

“The May deposition details Miller’s multiple extramarital affairs, including his sexual relationships with two subordinates during the 2016 presidential campaign… The affairs occurred while his wife, Kelly Miller, was pregnant and the two were not legally separated.”

Quote of the Day

July 16, 2019 at 3:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“From the president, to the speaker to freshmen members of the House, all of us have a responsibility to elevate the public discourse. Our words do matter. We all know politics is a combat sport, but it’s about time we lowered the temperature all across the board.”

— Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), quoted by McClatchy.

A Racist In the White House

July 16, 2019 at 2:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Remnick: “Republicans and Independents, evangelicals, and many others who might have voted for Trump in 2016 will eventually have to ask themselves whether it is possible to go on believing that he is a man of sufficient character to hold the Presidency. They will have to ask themselves what it means to overlook his racism and what this says about them. How can they believe it is possible to support a racist and escape that in themselves? Or will they pronounce themselves, as the Treasury Secretary, Steven Mnuchin, did, ‘not concerned’?”

“The present moment is never fixed, or not for long. History is in the hands of members of Congress who have the option to collude or impeach, go along or resist; it is in the hands of citizens who can vote or stay at home. In 1989, we lived the illusion of unstoppable democratic advance. Democratic values have since receded. In 2008, we enjoyed the illusion of racial progress. Today, Donald Trump is in the White House.”

North Korea Might Resume Weapons Testing

July 16, 2019 at 1:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “North Korea said Tuesday that upcoming regular summertime U.S.-South Korean military drills are forcing it to rethink whether it should be committed to the promises it has made to the United States. It cited its moratorium on nuclear and missile tests and other steps aimed at improving ties with Washington.”

“The statement said Trump vowed to suspend military drills with South Korea during his first and third meetings with Kim, but the planned summertime drills with Seoul and the deployment of weapons in the South show that Washington is not fulfilling that promise.”

House Freshmen Have Massive Fundraising Quarter

July 16, 2019 at 1:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

National Journal: “Swing-seat freshman Democrats raised a collective $24 million in the second quarter of 2019, a staggering sum that will provide an early fortification for key House battlegrounds and complicate Republicans’ attempts to reclaim the majority.”

“It’s the latest sign that the cash influx that boosted dozens of Democratic candidates to victory last November isn’t dissipating, even with the next election still more than a year away and with some two-dozen presidential candidates competing for donations.”

July 16, 2019 at 11:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kellyanne Conway escalated attacks on the four congresswomen who have been the subject of President Trump’s racist tweets, telling Fox News that they represent a “dark underbelly” of the country.

Said Conway: “What the president is doing is, we are tired — sick and tired — of many people in this country. Forget these four. They represent a dark underbelly of people in this country of people who are not respecting our troops, are not giving them the resources and the respect that they deserve.”

Former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci said that President Trump could be “turning into” a racist, Politico reports.

Said Scaramucci: “I don’t think the president is a racist. But here’s the thing, if you continue to say and act in that manner, then we all have to look at him and say, OK, well, maybe you weren’t a racist, but now you’re turning into one.”

Jesse Jackson Calls for Blagojevich Pardon

July 16, 2019 at 11:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Rev. Jesse Jackson and his oldest son, former Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. (D-IL), have urged President Trump to pardon Rod Blagojevich, the former Illinois governor whose arrest on charges of trying to sell a Senate seat ensnared the younger Mr. Jackson,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“When Barack Obama was elected president in 2008, Mr. Jackson Jr. was among those considered to fill his Senate seat… Federal investigators turned their attention to Mr. Jackson Jr. after the Blagojevich trial, and in 2013 he pleaded guilty to one count of felony fraud for converting campaign funds to personal use.”

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission notes that immigrants are protected by laws from employment discrimination, including harassment based on national origin:

Examples of potentially unlawful conduct include insults, taunting, or ethnic epithets, such as making fun of a person’s foreign accent or comments like, “Go back to where you came from,” whether made by supervisors or by co-workers.

Mark Sanford Mulls Primary Challenge to Trump

July 16, 2019 at 11:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mark Sanford (R), the former South Carolina congressman ousted from office after President Trump urged voters to reject him, told Charleston Post & Courier he is considering a run for president.

Sanford confirmed he will take the next month to formulate whether he will mount a potential run against Trump as a way of pushing a national debate about America’s mounting debt, deficit and government spending.

Said Sanford: “Sometimes in life you’ve got to say what you’ve got to say, whether there’s an audience or not for that message.”

Trump Insists He’s Not a Racist

July 16, 2019 at 10:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted that he is not a racist despite increasing criticism of his attacks on four minority, Democratic congresswomen.

Said Trump: “Those Tweets were NOT Racist. I don’t have a Racist bone in my body! The so-called vote to be taken is a Democrat con game. Republicans should not show ‘weakness’ and fall into their trap. This should be a vote on the filthy language, statements and lies told by the Democrat Congresswomen, who I truly believe, based on their actions, hate our Country.”

He added: “Nancy Pelosi tried to push them away, but now they are forever wedded to the Democrat Party. See you in 2020!”
