Biden No Longer Staying Above the Fray

July 15, 2019 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The settings on Mr. Biden’s trip were idyllic: a speech on the banks of a river in Dover, a news conference outside of a Portsmouth ice cream shop, a house party in a lush backyard here in Atkinson. But the words suggested that the former vice president is entering a new and more confrontational phase of his 2020 campaign.”

“Mr. Biden’s fresh efforts to highlight distinctions with his rivals — over issues that ranged this weekend from health care and foreign policy, to electability and executive orders — come as he seeks to move on from weeks of scrutiny of his decades-long record, and to offer a more substantive and forward-looking vision beyond his early focus on defeating the president.”

Socialist Showdown

July 15, 2019 at 6:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “If You’ve watched the NRCC this cycle, you will notice that the GOP’s House campaign arm has focused a good deal on branding incumbent House Democrats as socialists. This is part of a strategy: They believe Democrats have veered far outside the bounds of the traditional Democratic Party, and voters are not going to stand for it.”

“The NRCC is launching socialistshowdown.com today. It’s a ploy to try to foster primary challenges for House Democrats. The banner of the website features Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Rashida Tlaib and Rep. Ilhan Omar next to Fidel Castro and Vladimir Lenin.”

Trump Weighs Ousting Commerce Chief

July 15, 2019 at 6:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has told aides and allies that he is considering removing Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross after a stinging Supreme Court defeat on adding a citizenship question to the census,” NBC News reports.

“While Trump has previously expressed frustration with the 81-year-old Ross, in particular over failed trade negotiations, Ross’s long personal relationship with the president has allowed him to keep his job. And after the departure of Labor Secretary Alex Acosta, the Cabinet’s only Hispanic who resigned on Friday amid questions about his role in a controversial 2008 plea agreement with sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, Ross may yet receive another reprieve.”

“But some White House officials expect Ross to be the next Cabinet secretary to depart, possibly as soon as this summer, according to advisers and officials.”

No Sign of Mass Immigration Raids

July 15, 2019 at 6:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The nationwide immigration raids that President Trump said would begin Sunday failed to materialize on the streets of major U.S. cities, even as his statement cast a cloud of fear that kept many families indoors.”

“Immigration enforcement authorities said their plans to track down migrants with deportation orders would continue, but their operations over the weekend appeared more akin to routine actions rather than the mass roundups the president promised.”

O’Rourke Says His Ancestors Owned Slaves

July 14, 2019 at 11:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Beto O’Rourke revealed Sunday that his family’s ancestors owned slaves — a fact he said injected new urgency into a slate of policy proposals designed to grapple with slavery’s legacy,” NBC News reports.

“The Guardian first reported O’Rourke’s family history, saying that ‘abundant’ documentation exists on the website Ancestry.com of the couple’s ‘slave-owning’ ancestors and ‘their support for the Confederacy.'”

Trump Fans the Flames of a Racial Fire

July 14, 2019 at 9:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “President Trump woke up on Sunday morning, gazed out at the nation he leads, saw the dry kindling of race relations and decided to throw a match on it. It was not the first time, nor is it likely to be the last. He has a pretty large carton of matches and a ready supply of kerosene.”

“When it comes to race, Mr. Trump plays with fire like no other president in a century. While others who occupied the White House at times skirted close to or even over the line, finding ways to appeal to the resentments of white Americans with subtle and not-so-subtle appeals, none of them in modern times fanned the flames as overtly, relentlessly and even eagerly as Mr. Trump.”

Trump Doubles Down on Criticism of Congresswomen

July 14, 2019 at 8:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump on Sunday night doubled down on his rhetoric amid a growing backlash over his earlier tweets telling a group of progressive Democratic congresswomen that they should ‘go back’ to the countries that they came from,” The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “So sad to see the Democrats sticking up for people who speak so badly of our Country and who, in addition, hate Israel with a true and unbridled passion. Whenever confronted, they call their adversaries, including Nancy Pelosi, ‘RACIST.'”

He added: “Their disgusting language and the many terrible things they say about the United States must not be allowed to go unchallenged.”

Democrats Debate How Far Left Is Too Left

July 14, 2019 at 8:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The past few weeks have put on remarkable display just how far to the left the Democratic Party has moved, with many in the 2020 presidential field now embracing previously untouchable positions on health care and immigration,” the Washington Post reports.

“Democrats once touted their defense of those with preexisting conditions — a stance supported by the vast majority of Americans — but many leading presidential candidates now support ending the private insurance coverage on which most of the country relies. Democrats used to focus almost exclusively on reuniting migrant children and their families and protecting undocumented immigrants brought here by their parents; now many of the candidates are openly espousing making illegal border crossing a civil offense rather than a criminal one.”

“The high-profile shifts on issues that voters say they care about most mark a risky gambit by many candidates to tap into new energy in the party’s liberal base, the home of some of its loudest voices in the primary season. But it is triggering new worry that it comes at a cost: confirming Republican arguments that Democrats are far out of the mainstream, a threatening posture when moderate suburban voters have been the linchpin to winning general elections and down-ballot races.”

How Donald Trump Conquered the Republican Party

July 14, 2019 at 6:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “Republican members of Congress said nothing when President Trump told minority congresswomen to ‘go back’ to where they came from.”

“Axios obtained an advance copy of the book, American Carnage, which is deeply reported and engrossing. The book reveals Trump’s delight in tormenting Republicans who he views as weak or disloyal, and it helps explain the partywide silence on days like today.”

Ocasio-Cortez Is Defining Democrats In Swing States

July 14, 2019 at 3:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “Top Democrats are circulating a poll showing that one of the House’s most progressive members — Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez — has become a definitional face for the party with a crucial group of swing voters.”

“These Democrats are sounding the alarm that swing voters know and dislike socialism, warning it could cost them the House and the presidency. The poll is making the rounds of some of the most influential Democrats in America. “

Top Four Democrats All Lead Trump

July 14, 2019 at 2:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll finds Joe Biden leads President Trump by 9 points among registered voters, 51% to 42% — outside of the poll’s margin of error of plus-minus 3.5 percentage points.

Sen. Bernie Sanders is ahead of Trump by 7 points, 50% to 43%. Sen. Elizabeth Warren holds a 5-point advantage, 48% to 43%. And Sen. Kamala Harris is ahead by just 1 point, 45% to 44% — a jump ball.

Trump Targets Minority Lawmakers

July 14, 2019 at 2:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said on Twitter Sunday that a group of liberal lawmakers currently at odds with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi should “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came” before arguing for how the U.S. should be governed, the Wall Street Journal reports.

Democrats immediately denounced the comments as racist, with Mrs. Pelosi calling them “xenophobic.”

Said Trump: “So interesting to see ‘Progressive Democrat Congresswomen, who originally came from countries whose governments are a complete and total catastrophe, the worst, most corrupt and inept anywhere in the world (if they even have a functioning government at all), now loudly and viciously telling the people of the United States, the greatest and most powerful Nation on earth, how our government is to be run.”

He added: “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came. Then come back and show us how…….it is done.”

Scaling Wokeback Mountain

July 14, 2019 at 2:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Maureen Dowd: “In the age of Trump, there is no more stupid proposition than that Nancy Pelosi is the problem. If A.O.C. and her Pygmalions and acolytes decide that burning down the House is more important than deposing Trump, they will be left with a racist backward president and the emotional satisfaction of their own purity.”

Pelosi Sets Spending Demands for Two-Year Budget Deal

July 14, 2019 at 7:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi “said that a two-year budget agreement with the Trump administration must include equal increases in defense and nondefense spending, plus additional money for a program intended to improve healthcare for military veterans,” Reuters reports.

Said Pelosi: “We all agree on the need to address the debt limit, but we also must reach an agreement on spending priorities based upon the principle of parity as soon as possible.”

GOP Ready to Drive Off a Cliff on Obamacare

July 14, 2019 at 7:29 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans have no real plan to establish a new health care system if the courts strike down the Affordable Care Act before the 2020 election. But plenty of them are rooting for its demise anyway — even if it means plunging the GOP into a debate that splits the party and leaves them politically vulnerable,” Politico reports.

“After a decade of trying to gut Obamacare, Republicans may finally get their wish thanks to a Trump administration-backed lawsuit. Its success would cause chaos not only in the insurance markets but on Capitol Hill. And Republican senators largely welcome it — even if they don’t know what comes next.”

Cruz Denounces Tennessee for Honoring KKK Leader

July 14, 2019 at 7:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) denounced Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) for signing a proclamation honoring former Confederate general and Ku Klux Klan leader Nathan Bedford Forrest, The Hill reports.

Said Cruz: “This is wrong. Nathan Bedford Forrest was a Confederate general and a delegate to the 1868 Democratic Convention. He was also a slave trader and the 1st Grand Wizard of the KKK. Tennessee should not have an official day honoring him. Change the law.”

Pete Buttigieg’s Life in the Closet

July 14, 2019 at 7:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Many in his generation and in his college class decided to come out as young adults, whether they were confident they would be accepted or not, and had their 20s to navigate being open about their identity — a process that helped make Americans more aware and accepting of their gay friends, family members and co-workers. Instead, Mr. Buttigieg spent those years trying to reconcile his private life with his aspirations for a high-profile career in public service.”

“Attitudes toward gay rights changed immensely during that period, though he acknowledges that he was not always able or willing to see what broader social and legal shifts meant for him personally.”

Trump Retweets Commercial For His Golf Courses

July 14, 2019 at 7:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump used his White House Twitter perch Saturday to link to a commercial for his golf resorts in Scotland and Ireland,” the HuffPost reports.

“The post was the latest example of what ethics experts have complained is Trump’s manipulation of his powerful office to enrich himself and his family.”
