Some Republicans Worried Trump Is Usurping Congress

February 11, 2025 at 9:05 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congressional Republicans are publicly projecting that they’re in lockstep with the way President Donald Trump and Elon Musk are attempting to slash the federal workforce,” CNN reports.

“But under the surface, some GOP lawmakers are growing concerned by the effort to usurp Congress’ control of the federal purse strings. And they’re dealing with a deluge of calls from worried constituents and federal workers who are looking to their elected officials for answers.”

However, the Washington Post notes “conservatives have generally hailed the actions Trump has taken.”

Johnson Won’t Bring Up Senate Budget Resolution

February 11, 2025 at 9:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) told his House Republican leadership team that he would not bring up Sen. Lindsey Graham’s (R-SC) budget resolution if it passes the Senate, Punchbowl News reports.

Johnson has been clear that he prefers the “one big beautiful bill” approach — and Graham’s plan calls for two bills.

Europe Vows to Respond to Trump’s Tariffs

February 11, 2025 at 8:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“European leaders vowed on Tuesday to retaliate after President Trump raised tariffs on aluminum and steel to 25 percent, even as they held out hope that they would be able to negotiate a deal with the United States,” the New York Times reports.

“European Union officials have argued that Europe and the United States are deeply intertwined and that igniting a trade war would hurt both sides. But they have also been quietly preparing to hit back against possible U.S. tariffs, and have said they are ready to enact countermeasures if no trade solution can be found.”

Biden Is the Least Popular Living President

February 11, 2025 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Biden is viewed the least favorably of all current living US presidents — including Donald Trump — while Barack Obama is the most well-liked, according to new Gallup polling.

Egg Prices Have ‘Blown Way Past’ Record Highs

February 11, 2025 at 7:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Wholesale egg prices have eclipsed record levels as the U.S. scrambles to contain a bird-flu outbreak — and consumers may soon see more sticker shock at their local grocer as a result,” CNBC reports.

Rough Days for Democrats

February 11, 2025 at 7:36 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “While party activists want a re-run of the 2017 ‘Resistance’ and anti-Trump movement, Democratic leadership knows this is a very different moment. Trump won solidly in November, even carrying the popular vote. He led Republicans into the Senate majority. Trump’s polls are better than ever. Average Americans aren’t going to get upset that federal workers are being laid off, not with a $1.9 trillion deficit and $36 trillion debt.”

“Schumer and Jeffries are honing in on an economic message to explain exactly how Trump’s spending and tax cuts will affect their lives. Yet all the messaging in the world is unlikely to satisfy irate party activists who loathe Trump.”

“For now, Democrats will have to bide their time before two deadlines that allow them to gain back leverage: the March 14 government funding showdown and the upcoming debt-limit cliff.”

Jordan’s King Faces a Bind as He Meets With Trump

February 11, 2025 at 7:26 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“King Abdullah II, a close U.S. ally dependent on aid from Washington, is confronting the president’s demands that he take in Palestinians from Gaza, a step the king’s domestic politics will not allow,” the New York Times reports.

Washington Post: Trump to host Jordan’s King Abdullah II as he pushes Middle East overhaul.

Fort Liberty Will Be Fort Bragg Again

February 11, 2025 at 7:00 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Less than two years after Fort Bragg officially became Fort Liberty, the North Carolina Army base’s name is changing back to Fort Bragg,” the Raleigh News & Observer reports.

“U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered Army officials Monday to change the name. But it’s not the same soldier for whom the base was initially named.”

“Instead of renaming the base after Gen. Braxton Bragg, the native North Carolinian and Confederate leader who the base had been named after in 1918, Hegseth said Monday night the installation would be named after Pfc. Roland L. Bragg, a soldier who was assigned to the 18th Airborne Corps at the base and served during World War II.”

Democratic Lawmaker Froze During Speech

February 11, 2025 at 6:57 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. John Larson (D-CT) seemingly froze up mid-speech and stopped speaking for nearly half a minute yesterday, the CT Mirror reports.

His office later said it was “likely an adverse reaction to a new medication.”

Gabbard Clears Key Senate Hurdle

February 11, 2025 at 6:52 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senators voted to advance Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination to serve as director of national intelligence in a party-line vote Monday evening, setting the stage for a final confirmation vote later this week,” Politico reports.

“Having secured the support of 52 Senate Republicans, Gabbard, one of President Donald Trump’s most controversial Cabinet nominees, is on track to be confirmed as the nation’s top intelligence official in the coming days. Forty six Democrats in the chamber voted against Gabbard. Two senators were absent from the vote.”

Shutdown Fight Could Play Right Into Trump’s Hands

February 11, 2025 at 6:49 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rachel Bade: “The logic is straightforward enough: Republicans, after all, will need Democratic votes to keep the government open, given the Senate’s 60-vote threshold and House conservatives’ aversion to supporting any funding bill. Why not play a little hardball, the thinking goes, and try to get Trump and Musk to back off?”

“But having covered more than a few of these shutdown fights, I can say confidently that this isn’t the leverage point Democrats and much of Washington seem to think it is. Not only is this a battle Democrats probably can’t win, it’s one that could play right into Trump and Musk’s hands.”

No Vetting Could Allow Funds to Reach Terror Groups

February 11, 2025 at 6:45 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration’s dismantling of the US Agency for International Development and its sweeping freeze on foreign assistance has made it more difficult to track potential misuse of US taxpayer-funded humanitarian assistance, meaning it could end up unintentionally going to terrorist groups, according to a new report from the agency’s independent watchdog,” CNN reports.

“The USAID inspector general’s office’s conclusion appears to undermine President Donald Trump and Elon Musk’s arguments that their moves to abolish the agency will curtail fraud and waste.”

Trump Dismantles the Public Integrity Guardrails

February 11, 2025 at 6:40 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the first three weeks of his administration, President Donald Trump has moved with brazen haste to dismantle the federal government’s public integrity guardrails that he frequently tested during his first term but now seems intent on removing entirely,” the AP reports.

“In a span of hours on Monday, word came that he had forced out leaders of offices responsible for government ethics and whistleblower complaints. And in a boon to corporations, he ordered a pause to enforcement of a decades-old law that prohibits American companies from bribing foreign governments to win business. All of that came on top of the earlier late-night purge of more than a dozen inspectors general who are tasked with rooting out waste, fraud and abuse at government agencies.”

“It’s all being done with a stop-me-if-you-dare defiance by a president who the first time around felt hemmed in by watchdogs, lawyers and judges tasked with affirming good government and fair play. Now, he seems determined to break those constraints once and for all in a historically unprecedented flex of executive power.”

Nancy Mace Takes to House Floor With Charges of Rape

February 10, 2025 at 10:44 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC), “who in recent weeks has floated a run for governor, on Monday night accused her former fiancé and three other men of having drugged and raped her and other women, and of filming and taking lewd photographs of women and underage girls without their consent,” the New York Times reports.

“In a stunningly graphic speech on the House floor that had little precedent, Ms. Mace said the men, whom she named and displayed photographs of on a placard where lawmakers more typically display charts and graphs on policy issues, were involved in the ‘premeditated, calculated exploitation of innocent women and girls in my district.’”

Said Mace: “You’ve booked yourself a one-way ticket to hell. It is nonstop. There are no connections. So I and all of your victims can watch you rot into eternity.”

Trump Threatens to Cut Aid to Jordan and Egypt

February 10, 2025 at 8:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump said on Monday that he could cut aid to Jordan and Egypt if they refused his demand to permanently take in most Palestinians from Gaza, substantially increasing the pressure on key allies in the region to back his audacious proposal to relocate the entire population of the territory in order to redevelop it,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “If they don’t agree, I would conceivably withhold aid.”

“Both Jordan and Egypt have rejected any suggestion that Palestinians be relocated to their countries.”

Justice Department Drops Charges Against Eric Adams

February 10, 2025 at 7:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department on Monday told federal prosecutors in New York to drop corruption charges against Mayor Eric Adams, who was indicted in September and accused of being under illegal foreign influence and accepting bribes through campaign donations and luxury travel perks,” the Washington Post reports.

Senate Ready to Leap Frog House on Reconciliation

February 10, 2025 at 6:25 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Pressure is building against Speaker Mike Johnson, as he scrambles to deliver on President Donald Trump’s legislative agenda, with the GOP-controlled Senate and conservative House Republican hardliners both pressing for their own proposals,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Despite pleas from Johnson, Senate Budget Committee Chair Lindsey Graham (R-SC) is preparing to mark up a budget resolution on Wednesday that includes more than $300 billion in new funding for the Pentagon and border security, as well as energy policy changes. The new funding would be offset with spending cuts elsewhere.”

“Graham’s plan, which is blessed by Senate Majority Leader John Thune, would mean a two-step reconciliation process.”

Said Graham, on X: “My dear friend Speaker Johnson is right. Like President Trump, I prefer ‘one big beautiful bill’ … That is my preference, but reality is something altogether different.”
