House Chairman Requests Trump Tax Returns

April 3, 2019 at 6:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA), chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, said Congress has a duty to conduct oversight of “our voluntary Federal tax system and determine how Americans – including those elected to our highest office – are complying with those laws,” the Washington Post reports.

President Trump has refused to provide his tax returns, and in a break from other presidential candidates, never released his returns.

The New York Times says the request will start “what is likely to be a momentous fight with his administration.”

Grassley Calls Trump’s Wind Comments ‘Idiotic’

April 3, 2019 at 5:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) is expressing irritation at what he calls “idiotic” comments by President Trump about wind energy, CBS News reports.

Grassley told reporters that the comments “were first of all idiotic and it doesn’t show much respect for Chuck Grassley as the grandfather of the wind energy tax credit.”

House Intelligence Seeks Documents From Inaugural

April 3, 2019 at 4:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House Intelligence Committee has asked one of the top contractors to President Trump’s inaugural to provide it with documents about the event, a person familiar with the situation said on Wednesday, opening up a new line of inquiry into the planning and financing of the ceremonies,” the New York Times reports.

“The committee asked for documents from and an interview with Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, who had been a close friend of the first lady, Melania Trump, and who had helped plan the celebrations and parties around the inaugural.”

Senate Republicans Go ‘Nuclear’ to Speed Nominations

April 3, 2019 at 4:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “For the third time in six years, the majority party in the Senate detonated the so-called nuclear option on Wednesday to unilaterally change years-old rules of the chamber with a simple-majority vote. This time, to work through a backlog of President Trump’s judicial and administration nominations, Republicans cut the time between ending debate and a final confirmation vote on executive-branch nominees and district court judges from 30 hours to two.”

“The change was a provocative step that reignited a bitter partisan fight over presidential nominations that has raged for a decade and spanned presidencies from both parties. Democrats dwelled at length over the blockade that stopped Judge Merrick B. Garland from ascending to the Supreme Court in the final year of Barack Obama’s presidency to angrily question how Republicans could complain about the handling of Mr. Trump’s nominees.”

Washington Post: “Under previous Senate orders, these nominees used to require 30 hours of debate after they had cleared an initial procedural vote. Now, such nominees will receive just two hours of formal debate before a final confirmation roll call.”

Biden Pledges to Be ‘More Respectful’ of Personal Space

April 3, 2019 at 3:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden posted a video on Twitter pledging to be more mindful of people’s personal space in the wake of multiple allegations from women accusing the former vice president of making them uncomfortable with his physical contact,” Politico reports.

“Biden said the contact — handshakes, hugs and shoulder grabs — were his way of showing support to others, something he appreciated during times of hardship in his own life.”

“But the former vice president also acknowledged that social norms have changed and promised to adapt his own behavior accordingly.”

Kobach Suggests ‘Processing Towns’ for Migrants

April 3, 2019 at 2:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Kris Kobach, who President Trump is considering appointing as his administration’s “immigration tsar,” suggested on Fox Business creating “camps” for asylum seekers in the United States.

Said Kobach: “Create processing towns that are confined, and so when someone comes in and falsely claims asylum, we don’t release them for six months onto the streets of the United States.”

He added: “We process them right there, in that camp, where they have the three square meals, they’re living in a nice mobile home, and then as soon as they’re done, as soon as the claim is rejected, they’re on the next plane back home.”

GOP Senator Warns Biden ‘Would Lose Teeth’

April 3, 2019 at 12:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) joked that former Vice President Joe Biden may “lose some teeth” if he attempts to embrace the GOP senator in a manner similar to how several women have described encounters with Biden that made them uncomfortable in recent days, The Hill reports.

Said Kennedy: “I’ve said this before, just because you’re accused of something doesn’t mean you’re guilty of it. This is America and you do have a right to due process. On the other hand, this is no country for creepy old men.”

April 3, 2019 at 12:09 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

For some unknown reason, President Trump said once again that “my father is German, was German. Born in a very wonderful place in Germany.”

Fred Trump was actually born in New York. The Smoking Gun has his birth certificate.

Quote of the Day

April 3, 2019 at 11:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Someone’s gonna leak this speech to the media.”

— President Trump, quoted by CBS News, apparently unaware there were press and cameras in the room covering his speech to a NRCC fundraising dinner.

House Judiciary Authorizes Subpoena for Mueller Report

April 3, 2019 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) said that he would give Attorney General Bill Barr “time to change his mind” about providing the full, unredacted report, but that the subpoena would be served if he does not voluntarily comply, Axios reports.

Trump Claims Wind Turbines Cause Cancer

April 3, 2019 at 9:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump has long despised wind power. He has repeatedly blamed wind turbines for killing birds (which they do at a lower rate than other energy sources) and for allegedly causing electrical power to halt when the wind stops blowing (in fact, electricity grids using mixed power sources and battery storage have solved this problem.) In a speech tonight to House Republicans, Trump claimed that wind turbines cause cancer,” New York Magazine reports.

Said Trump: “They say the noise causes cancer.”

“Wind turbines do not cause cancer. Some people blame the noise for causing a variety of other health ailments, but these charges have zero scientific validity. Cancer is not caused by noises of any kind.”

Mueller Testimony Before Congress Is ‘Inevitable’

April 3, 2019 at 8:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) said he sees it as a foregone conclusion that Special Counsel Robert Mueller will face questioning by Congress following the release of his report on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election,” Bloomberg reports.

Said Schiff: “I think it’s inevitable that Bob Mueller is going to have to testify before Congress.”

He added that his committee has “a statutory requirement that the Intelligence Community, FBI, brief us on any significant counterintelligence or intelligence activity. And it’s hard to imagine something that rises more to that level than this investigation.”

Trump Makes More Big Donors Ambassadors

April 3, 2019 at 8:14 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

An NBC News review of those who donated to the Trump inauguration “found at least 14 major contributors to its inaugural fund who were later nominees to become ambassadors, donating an average of slightly over $350,000 apiece. Though the Trump administration says the business acumen of these nominees qualifies them to represent the U.S. abroad, six of the 14 nominations have languished for months in the Republican-controlled Senate. One nomination has stalled for about two years.”

“Since the 1950s, roughly two-thirds of confirmed ambassadors have been career foreign service officials and one-third have been political appointees. Presidents Obama and George W. Bush kept within that range… The Trump administration is different. Of its confirmed appointees, around 50 percent are career foreign service diplomats, and 50 percent are political appointees.”

Democrat Trails In Key Wisconsin Race

April 3, 2019 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Appeals Judge Brian Hagedorn (R) held a narrow lead early Wednesday in the race for Wisconsin Supreme Court, according to unofficial tallies that were so close both sides were bracing for a recount,” the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports.

“Hagedorn led fellow Appeals Judge Lisa Neubauer (D) 50.2% to 49.8% with nearly all of Tuesday’s votes unofficially counted… But the margin was so narrow that the Associated Press had not yet called the race as of 5 a.m. Wednesday.”

Trump Realizes He’s Stuck with Powell

April 3, 2019 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “President Trump is blaming the Federal Reserve for holding back the economy and stock market despite the central bank’s recent decision to do two things he wanted—halt rate increases and stop shrinking its asset portfolio. The president blasted the Fed and Chairman Jerome Powell at three meetings in the past week alone, telling Republican senators, supporters and staffers that if it wasn’t for the central bank’s past rate increases, economic output and stocks would be higher and the U.S. budget deficit would be rising less.”

“Mr. Trump also blamed Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin for recommending Mr. Powell for the top Fed job.”

“And he recalled a recent phone conversation he had with Mr. Powell, this person said. ‘I guess I’m stuck with you,’ the president recalled telling Mr. Powell.”
