O’Rourke Will Rely on a Team This Time

March 30, 2019 at 12:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Dan Balz: “Democrats who spoke with members of O’Rourke’s team over the past few months said they found, between conversations late last year and more recently, a noticeable difference in his thinking. One Democratic strategist said that, in an early conversation, he got the sense that O’Rourke and his team were trying to decide whether they could run a presidential campaign largely as an extension of the Senate campaign.”

“By spring, such thoughts seemed to have disappeared.”

Said one Democrat: “He’s clear that this is at a totally different scale: the size and scope and intricacies. For him to be successful, he has to be the best candidate he can be, which means the most professional team around him.”

Trump Fed Pick Held In Contempt Over Child Support

March 30, 2019 at 12:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stephen Moore, the economics commentator chosen by President Trump for a seat on the Federal Reserve board, was found in contempt of court after failing to pay his ex-wife more than $300,000 in alimony, child support and other debts, the Guardian reports.

“In a divorce filing in August 2010, Moore was accused of inflicting ’emotional and psychological abuse’ on his ex-wife during their 20-year marriage. Allison Moore said in the filing she had been forced to flee their home to protect herself. She was granted a divorce in May 2011.”

Buttigieg Gains Traction In the Polls

March 30, 2019 at 12:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Harry Enten: “Buttigieg just scored his highest Democratic primary national poll number to date at 4% of Democrats and Democratic leaning registered voters, according to Quinnipiac University. That easily beats his old high of 1% in a live interview national poll. A jump of 3 points may not seem like a lot, but, because the margin of error shrinks significantly the closer you get to 0, the move from 1% to 4% is likely statistically significant.”

“Obviously, the Quinnipiac poll is just one poll, but it is just the latest sign that the Buttigieg brand is rising among Democrats.”

Democrats Can’t Quit Their Big Donors

March 30, 2019 at 11:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The race for cash in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary is reaching a frenetic peak this weekend with a dozen fund-raisers on both coasts, as presidential hopefuls rush to vacuum up $2,800 checks — the maximum amount individuals can give for the primary by law — before the first quarterly fund-raising deadline of the campaign at midnight on Sunday. But the candidates don’t want to discuss any of this.”

Delaware Changes How It Awards Electoral Votes

March 30, 2019 at 8:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gov. John Carney (D) has signed legislation adding Delaware to a group of states pledging to give their Electoral College presidential votes to the winner of the national popular vote, regardless of the voters’ will in those states, NBC Philadelphia reports.

Carney’s approval makes Delaware the 13th Democratic-leaning state to join the popular-vote compact, which now has 184 of the 270 electoral college votes needed to elect the president.

The agreement goes into effect once states representing at least 270 electoral votes have joined.

March 30, 2019 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s campaign is now selling “Pencil-Neck Adam Schiff” T-shirts after Trump mocked the lawmaker during a Michigan rally this week.

The shirt shows Schiff with a yellow pencil for a neck and a red clown nose.

Trump Tracks TV Ratings as Mueller Probe Ends

March 30, 2019 at 8:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Since Attorney General William Barr said last weekend that the special counsel’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election found no conspiracy between the president’s campaign and Moscow, Trump has seemed most interested in how the findings are playing on TV.”

“He has reveled in the falling ratings of networks he claims unfairly covered the Russia investigation while celebrating his allies in conservative media who joined him in calling special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe a ‘hoax’ all along. Trump has checked ratings daily, according to his aides, and has bragged to senators and others that Fox News is doing better than competitors like MSNBC and CNN.”

GOP Shifts Focus to Investigating Obama Officials

March 30, 2019 at 8:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are setting their sights on top Obama-era officials as they plan their own probe into the 2016 election,” The Hill reports.

“Eager to move on from special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian election interference and the Trump campaign, GOP senators are gearing up to investigate ‘the investigators.’ The idea is gaining traction within the Republican caucus, including from Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY).”

O’Rourke Will Hold Rallies on the Mexican Border

March 30, 2019 at 8:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Beto O’Rourke will hold a major rally in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday, a city thrust to the center of America’s immigration debate by President Trump and the U.S government this week,” Reuters reports.

“O’Rourke, a former congressman from El Paso, will kick off three rallies in Texas in his bid to become the Democratic nominee a day after Republican Trump threatened to close the U.S border with Mexico as soon as next week.”

Abrams Builds Massive Political Network

March 30, 2019 at 8:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Stacey Abrams is set to reveal soon whether she’ll run for president or senator or something else,” Politico reports.

“But in recent months, the Democrat has mounted a nationwide, largely below-the-radar effort to expand her donor and political network that will make her an instant force whatever she decides.”

White House Blames Fed for Slowing Growth

March 29, 2019 at 11:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump and his top economic adviser criticized the Federal Reserve’s recent interest rate increases again on Friday, blaming the central bank for hindering economic growth while denying any suggestion of a looming slowdown,” the New York Times reports.

A Traditional Campaign With a Wildcard Candidate

March 29, 2019 at 11:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “On a former trading floor in an office tower in Rosslyn, Va., with sweeping views of the Potomac River, the Trump 2020 campaign is settling in. It has about 40 staff members and counting, reported $19.2 million in cash on hand in its last report and has spent $4.5 million on online ads since December.”

“It is a long way from Mr. Trump’s first presidential race, which came together in the summer of 2015 and was run as a taped-together operation, with a few desks strewn across an unfinished floor of Trump Tower.”

“But one thing is missing from the high-powered but traditional campaign operation underway in Rosslyn: a candidate who abides by tradition.”

Ocasio-Cortez Defends GOP Lawmaker Called a Moron

March 29, 2019 at 11:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) shut down an audience member at an MSNBC town hall on Friday who yelled out, calling a former GOP lawmaker a “moron,” The Hill reports.

Said Ocasio-Cortez: “Hey, hey, hey, that’s unacceptable.”

She then turned to former Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) and added “And that’s the difference between me and Trump.”

Nevada Democrat Accuses Biden of Inappropriate Kiss

March 29, 2019 at 6:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Lucy Flores, the former Democratic nominee for Nevada lieutenant governor, writes in The Cut about an “inappropriate encounter” with former Vice President Joe Biden when he campaigned for her in 2014.

Said Flores: “He proceeded to plant a big slow kiss on the back of my head. My brain couldn’t process what was happening. I was embarrassed. I was shocked. I was confused.”

She added: “I couldn’t move and I couldn’t say anything. I wanted nothing more than to get Biden away from me. My name was called and I was never happier to get on stage in front of an audience.”

Trump Threatens to Close Border with Mexico

March 29, 2019 at 6:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “threatened to close the U.S. border with Mexico next week, potentially disrupting millions of legal border crossings and billions of dollars in trade if Mexico does not stop immigrants from reaching the United States,” Reuters reports.

Said Trump: “I’ll just close the border, and with a deficit like we have with Mexico and have had for many years, closing the border will be a profit-making operation.”

Vox: “But that is not at all how trade works.”

Butina Seeks Speedy Deportation Back to Russia

March 29, 2019 at 4:24 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Maria Butina has waived her right to try to stay in the United States after serving her sentence,” the Daily Beast reports.

“In the filing, released on Friday, Butina asked for a judicial order of removal, which would keep her and the government from having to go through the typical process Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) uses to deport immigrants. In short, the filing expedites her deportation from the country. In the filing, Butina––a Russian national, who pleaded guilty to one conspiracy count––said she does not expect to face persecution or torture in Russia.”

GOP Sees Peril as Party Scrambles on Healthcare

March 29, 2019 at 3:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s surprise escalation of his legal attack on Obamacare dropped a political grenade in the laps of congressional Republicans, who are now stuck with devising a viable alternative if the courts invalidate the 2010 healthcare law,” Bloomberg reports.

“The problem for GOP lawmakers is the paucity of free-market policy ideas for health care that are politically popular. Obamacare’s expanded protections are now baked into voters’ expectations for insurance and patient care, and any Republican replacement would likely draw from the same proposals that ultimately led to a walloping in the 2018 midterm elections.”

Former Trump Family Driver Is In ICE Custody

March 29, 2019 at 3:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s former family driver “has been locked in a correctional facility six hours’ drive from his family as he fights a protracted legal battle to remain in the United States,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Tamas has fallen prey to the crackdown on immigration that is at the top of the president’s national agenda — and letters of support from high-profile businesspeople and his former bosses have so far not helped him win leniency.”
