Trump Acts Out Paris Terror Attacks for NRA

April 27, 2019 at 7:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump appeared to re-enact the 2015 Paris terror attacks in his speech at the National Rifle Association’s conference, claiming strict gun laws were to blame for the attack’s high death toll, the Daily Beast reports.

Trump said that if “there was one gun being carried by one person on the other side” who had “aimed at the opposite direction,” there “very well could’ve been a whole different result.” He then started making shooting gestures with his hands, complete with sound effects, while saying, “Get over here! Boom. Get over here! Boom. And then they left.”

The terror attacks killed 130 and injured 350.

April 27, 2019 at 7:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) “is shrugging off her state’s governor’s endorsement of former Vice President Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign over her own,” the AP reports.

Said Gillibrand: “Our governor can endorse whoever he likes, but I am the best candidate to defeat President Trump, and I will. The truth is, this presidential election will not be won on the endorsements of powerful people.”

Russia Works Constantly to Undermine U.S. Elections

April 26, 2019 at 6:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

FBI Director Christopher Wray said Russian efforts to influence American public opinion are not confined only to periods around elections, NBC News reports.

Said Wray: “It’s pretty much a 365-days-a-year threat. And that has absolutely continued.”

The FBI chief said it consists of constant use of social media, with “fake news, propaganda, false personas, et cetera, to spin us up, pit us against each other, sow divisiveness and discord, and undermine Americans’ faith in democracy.”

NRA Chief Says He’s Being Extorted

April 26, 2019 at 6:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Longtime National Rifle Association leader Wayne LaPierre has told the group’s board he is being extorted and pressured to resign by the organization’s president, Oliver North, over allegations of financial improprieties, in an extraordinary battle roiling one of the nation’s most powerful nonprofit political groups,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

New York Times: “Behind it is a widening crisis involving a legal battle between the N.R.A. and its most influential contractor, Ackerman McQueen, amid renewed threats from regulators in New York, where the N.R.A. is chartered, to investigate the group’s tax-exempt status. With contributions lagging, the N.R.A. is also facing an increasingly well-financed gun control movement, motivated by a string of mass shootings.”

Biden Talks to ‘The View’

April 26, 2019 at 5:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Alexander Burns: “After the very first exchange, Biden never returned to the theme of the 2020 election as a national emergency. Why not use a platform like this to hammer home the central opening argument of his campaign? And Biden stumbled over the invasion-of-space and Anita Hill questions, both of which were among the most foreseeable early questions of his campaign. This was about as unchallenging an interview as Biden could expect and he could have prepared and delivered clear, definitive answers that didn’t involve litigating Senate procedure. And that’s just not what he did.”

“Having said that, the appearance also illustrated the core reasons why Biden is an appealing candidate to many people — his bear hug of the Obama administration’s record on policy and ethics, for one, and his richly emotional comments about his son, Beau.”

Rosenstein Attacks Obama, Comey and Journalists

April 26, 2019 at 2:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Deputy attorney general Rod Rosenstein “attacked the Obama administration, former law enforcement officials, the press and his own critics in a fiery speech on Thursday night that he used to defend his handling of the Russia investigation,” the New York Times reports.

“He blamed the previous administration for doing too little to publicize Russia’s campaign to sabotage the 2016 election while it was underway, and he called out the F.B.I. and Congress for leaks about the case… He left unmentioned that Republican congressional leaders urged former President Barack Obama to keep quiet about the Kremlin’s operation during the presidential race.”

“In a letter obtained by CNN and dated Friday, Jordan is asking White House counsel Pat Cipollone to allow former official Carl Kline to sit down for a voluntary transcribed interview to avoid a growing constitutional clash between the two branches of government.”

“Cummings is now threatening to hold Kline in contempt, which Jordan says in his letter could happen as soon as Tuesday.

Bonus Quote of the Day

April 26, 2019 at 1:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If he looks young and vibrant compared to me, I should probably go home.”

— Joe Biden, quoted by NBC News, responding to President Trump’s suggestion that Biden is too old to be president.

The Appeasement of Donald Trump

April 26, 2019 at 1:49 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Andrew Sullivan: “The definition of appeasement, according to Dictionary.com, is ‘to bring to a state of peace, quiet, ease, calm, or contentment; pacify; soothe: i.e. to appease an angry king’ and to ‘yield or concede to the belligerent demands of (a nation, group, person, etc.) in a conciliatory effort, sometimes at the expense of justice or other principles.’”

“That’s where we are aren’t we? We are appeasing an angry king. And the usual result of appeasement is that the angry king banks every concession and, empowered and emboldened by his success, gets more aggressive and more power hungry. Far from restraining him, appeasement gives him time to amass strength, until there’s no restraining him at all. By the time it’s absolutely clear that he is a tyrant, it’s too late. That’s the core narrative of every Shakespeare play that charts a historical bid for absolute power. And every one of those plays is a tragedy.”

Pelosi Blasts McConnell for Not Taking Up House Bills

April 26, 2019 at 1:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) criticized Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) for ignoring a series of bills passed by the Democratic House, The Hill reports.

Said Pelosi: “The Republican Senate needs to wake up, and vote on these urgently needed bills immediately. If they don’t like our bipartisan bills, then they can pass their own version and we can go to conference.”

Democrats Hold Big Edge on Health Care

April 26, 2019 at 1:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “Democrats enjoy a 17 percentage point advantage over Republicans in Americans’ assessments of whom they trust more to handle health care, 40% to 23%. That compares with a public more evenly divided over which party would better handle several other major areas of national policy.”

“Among all Americans, 42% support a single-payer plan like the one espoused by [Bernie] Sanders, while 31% express opposition. … The partisan gap narrows significantly, however, for the option of Americans buying into a government program. Overall, 53% support the buy-in option, with 17% opposed and 29% on the fence.”

How Trump Plotted Revenge Against the Democrats

April 26, 2019 at 12:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “In multiple conference calls and closed-door gatherings at the White House that have taken place since January, the president began mapping out, with both White House and outside counsel, how to handle the coming onslaught of congressional probes and subpoenas aimed at his administration, his family, and his business empire.”

“By February, Trump was actively asking those around him about the ways in which subpoenas from Democratic-controlled House committees could be fiercely challenged, a senior administration official said. By that time, those close to Trump say he had already settled, firmly, on a path forward.”

“President Trump’s opinion—an assessment reinforced by the advice of his lawyers and friends—was that he and his legal war council shouldn’t give an inch to congressional investigators and liberal lawmakers.”
