No Record Found of Trump’s Call With Sondland

November 27, 2019 at 11:42 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Sondland’s recollection of a phone conversation that he said took place on Sept. 9 has emerged as a centerpiece of Trump’s defense as House Democrats argue in an impeachment inquiry that he abused his office to pressure Ukraine to investigate Democrats.”

“However, no other witness testimony or documents have emerged that corroborate Sondland’s description of a call that day.”

“Trump himself, in describing the conversation, has referred only to the ambassador’s account of the call, which — based on Sondland’s activities — would have occurred before dawn in Washington. And the White House has not located a record in its switchboard logs of a call between Trump and Sondland on Sept. 9, according to an administration official who, like others in this report.”

Stephen Miller Keeps His Place In Trump’s Inner Circle

November 27, 2019 at 3:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In case there were any doubts over his White House standing, Stephen Miller offered his critics the ultimate power move Tuesday as he boarded Air Force One to accompany President Trump to a campaign rally in South Florida,” the Washington Post reports.

“Miller’s reserved seat was another sign that the White House senior adviser has suffered no internal consequences in the two weeks since a social justice website published a trove of his old emails that showed him promoting political material and talking points linked to white-supremacist groups.”

Netanyahu Unleashes Populist Fury Against Prosecutors

November 27, 2019 at 3:26 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post:: “The divisions were on display Tuesday night at a raucous pro-Netanyahu rally in Tel Aviv. Angry supporters reportedly chanted ‘Die Leftist’ and ‘Arrest the Investigators’ and carried signs reading ‘Cops — Or Criminals?’ Speakers railed against the attorney general and prosecutors — who have been given security details in recent days — parroting the prime minister’s portrayal of the indictments as a ‘coup’ attempt by an unaccountable deep state and a biased media. One protester attempted to grab the microphone of an on-air journalist as another spat on him.”

“But, following a day of speculation about his plans, Netanyahu failed to make an appearance at the gathering as discomfort over his scorched-earth response to the indictments grew.”

Giuliani Tells Trump ‘Insurance’ Remark Was a Joke

November 27, 2019 at 3:09 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani called President Trump this week to reassure him that he had been joking when he told media outlets he had “insurance” if Trump turned on him in the Ukraine scandal, Reuters reports.

Attorney Robert Costello said Giuliani “at my insistence” had called Trump “within the last day” to emphasize that he had not been serious when he said he had an “insurance policy, if thrown under the bus.”

Giuliani Gives Shifting Answers on Ukrainian Oligarch

November 27, 2019 at 3:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani acknowledged this week meeting with a lawyer for a Ukrainian oligarch who he had previously said he had “nothing to do with,” CNN reports.

Giuliani said “that he met a lawyer for oligarch Dmitry Firtash in New York City for two hours during a time he was seeking information useful to President Trump’s re-election and seeking to dig up dirt on former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden. The acknowledgment is in apparent conflict with what Giuliani told CNN in October, when he said he did not think Firtash had information relevant to any of his efforts.”

Trump to Cut Financial Contribution to NATO

November 27, 2019 at 3:00 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration has moved to substantially cut its contribution to NATO’s collective budget according to several US and NATO officials, a symbolic move that comes as many continue to question President Trump’s commitment to the transatlantic alliance as he prepares to attend a summit to mark its 70th anniversary in London next week,” CNN reports.

Justice Department Report Will Undercut Trump Claims

November 27, 2019 at 2:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Justice Department’s inspector general found no evidence that the FBI attempted to place undercover agents or informants inside Donald Trump’s campaign in 2016 as agents investigated whether his associates conspired with Russia’s election interference operation,” the New York Times reports.

“The determination by the inspector general, Michael Horowitz, is expected to be a key finding in his highly anticipated report due out on Dec. 9 examining aspects of the Russia investigation. The finding also contradicts some of the most inflammatory accusations hurled by Mr. Trump and his supporters, who alleged not only that F.B.I. officials spied on the Trump campaign but also at one point that former President Barack Obama had ordered Mr. Trump’s phones tapped.”

“He also found that FBI leaders did not take politically motivated actions in pursuing a secret wiretap on a former Trump campaign adviser, Carter Page — eavesdropping that Mr. Trump’s allies have long decried as politically motivated.”

More Women Than Ever Head House Committees

November 27, 2019 at 1:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Rep. Carolyn Maloney was surprised when, in 1993 and new to Congress, she first strolled into a hearing room and saw the walls lined with all-male portraits… Nearly three decades later, Maloney is heading the powerful House Oversight Committee. Her election to the post last week made her the 26th woman to ever chair a committee in the House and the sixth woman to lead one of the 20 standing House committees in a single Congress — a record in the 231 years of the chamber’s existence.”

“Previously, the most women to chair committees was four. It’s yet another small crack in the glass ceiling, particularly for Democrats, and Nancy Pelosi, who is on her second tour as the first woman speaker.”

Why Trump Can’t Distance Himself from Giuliani

November 27, 2019 at 1:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

As President Trump faces impeachment in the House, his instincts might be to throw his personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, under the bus like he seemingly tried last night in an interview with Bill O’Reilly.

China Hopes Trump Will Be Re-Elected

November 27, 2019 at 1:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Although he may seem unpredictable, Chinese officials are betting that Trump’s transactional approach to politics might be preferable to a more principle-driven president, whether Democrat or Republican.”

Said one politically connected person in Beijing: “Trump is a businessman. We can just pay him money and the problems will be solved. As long as we have money, we can buy him. That’s the reason why we prefer him to Democrats.”

Giuliani Sought Business with Top Ukraine Prosecutor

November 27, 2019 at 12:46 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rudy Giuliani was in negotiations earlier this year to represent Ukraine’s then-top prosecutor, Yuri Lutsenko, and the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice, the Washington Post reports.

“The agreements, which were never executed, would have given Lutsenko a business relationship with President Trump’s personal lawyer, while Giuliani would have profited from a person who was helping him try to get damaging information on one of Trump’s political rivals.”

Meanwhile, the New York Times reports as Giuliani “waged a public campaign this year to unearth damaging information in Ukraine about President Trump’s political rivals, he privately pursued hundreds of thousands dollars in business from Ukrainian government officials.”

Bloomberg Floods Super Tuesday States with Ads

November 27, 2019 at 12:43 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mike Bloomberg’s TV advertising approach differs from his Democratic primary competitors by focusing on Super Tuesday states rather than early voting states such as Iowa,” CNBC reports.

“According to a CNBC analysis, Bloomberg has spent $13.2 million on television ads across the 14 Super Tuesday states in his first week as a candidate. That’s more than his competitors’ combined ad spending in those states for the entire primary to date. “

Judge Delays Michael Flynn Sentencing

November 27, 2019 at 12:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Flynn had been on track to be sentenced Dec. 18… District Judge Emmet Sullivan hasn’t indicated how he will handle Flynn’s shift in defense strategies. But the appointee of President Bill Clinton did agree to a joint request from federal prosecutors and Flynn’s attorneys filed Tuesday night asking reshuffle his sentencing schedule in part because of a Justice Department inspector general report that’s slated for release Dec. 9.”

Supreme Court to Be Tested as Neutral Arbiter

November 27, 2019 at 12:04 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The court, composed of five conservatives nominated by Republican presidents and four liberals chosen by Democrats, has little choice but to step onto a fiercely partisan battleground. It announced Tuesday that it will consider on Dec. 13 whether to schedule a full briefing and argument on the president’s request that it overturn a lower-court ruling giving New York prosecutors access to Trump’s tax returns and other financial records in their investigation of hush-money payments in the lead-up to the 2016 election. There are many more such evaluations to come.”

“And the first case likely to reach the Supreme Court on the question of Trump’s broad assertion of executive power over those who worked for him features former White House counsel Donald McGahn, who played a pivotal role in the confirmation of Trump’s Supreme Court nominees, Neil M. Gorsuch and Brett M. Kavanaugh.”

How Tactical Voting Could Defeat Boris Johnson

November 27, 2019 at 12:02 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Independent: “Fewer than 120,000 anti-Brexit tactical votes in the right seats could deny Boris Johnson an overall majority in the House of Commons, new polling suggests.”

“A large-scale survey of almost 40,000 voters found that Conservatives are heading for 366 seats in the House of Commons, giving Mr Johnson a comfortable majority of 82.”

“But analysis for the Best for Britain campaign for a second EU referendum found that in 57 seats, the Tory candidate could be defeated by 4,000 or fewer anti-Brexit voters voting tactically.”

Trump Imagines Himself a Prize Fighter

November 27, 2019 at 11:08 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

As President Trump faces the threat of impeachment, he tweeted a photoshopped image of himself as a prize fighter.

The New Republican Mainstream

November 27, 2019 at 11:01 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Laura Field: “Bannon, Gorka, and Miller are the very sort of men who support Donald Trump Jr., and the very sort of men whom he supports. And like it or not, they are the face of today’s conservatism and today’s Republican party. Earlier this month, emails were leaked that definitively proved Stephen Miller’s white supremacy, and not a single Republican member of Congress has joined the call for his resignation. As Jeet Heer put it back in August, Stephen Miller’s Republicanism is perfectly mainstream.”

“And so, while my first thought after the Trump Jr. protest was to question the journalism—Why are they calling these guys mainstream?—it’s the reality that’s off, not the writers.”

Homeland Security Created Fake University

November 27, 2019 at 10:58 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“About 90 additional foreign students of a fake university in metro Detroit created by the Department of Homeland Security have been arrested in recent months,” the Detroit Free Press reports.

“A total of about 250 students have now been arrested since January on immigration violations by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as part of a sting operation by federal agents who enticed foreign-born students, mostly from India, to attend the school that marketed itself as offering graduate programs in technology and computer studies.”
