Trump Tests the Limits of His Power

January 29, 2025 at 9:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump abruptly fired dozens of officials in the past few days — including inspectors general, a member of the National Labor Relations Board and career prosecutors — in ways that apparently violated federal laws, setting up the possibility of lawsuits,” the New York Times reports.

“But the prospect of getting dragged into court may be exactly what Mr. Trump’s lawyers are hoping for. There is a risk that judges may determine that some of the dismissals were illegal, but any rulings in the president’s favor would establish precedents that would expand presidential power to control the federal government.”

FBI Overhaul Off to a Rocky Start

January 29, 2025 at 9:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Trump officials tried to start their shake-up of the Federal Bureau of Investigation even before the president took office, picking supervisors in New York and New Jersey to run the agency until the Senate could confirm Kash Patel, Trump’s choice for FBI director,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“But in an Inauguration Day scramble, White House officials goofed on the White House website and listed the wrong man in charge of the agency… Instead of correcting the error, officials let it stand, and the two men traded temporary titles, hopeful that Patel could soon be in the job.”

Inside 45 Hours of Chaos

January 29, 2025 at 9:14 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration’s biggest swing at radically reshaping federal spending lasted just under 45 hours,” CNN reports.

“A sweeping freeze on trillions in federal spending for grants and loans, issued Monday night by the White House budget office to federal agencies without fanfare, sparked outrage and confusion – even among fellow Republicans. The impact touched all corners of the country, with state Medicaid funding portals briefly shuttered and programs like Meals on Wheels and Head Start scrambling to figure out if they were about to lose their funding.”

Politico: Trump went for shock and awe. Now he’s mopping up.

January 29, 2025 at 9:12 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Said Trump, on Truth Social: “Because Jay Powell and the Fed failed to stop the problem they created with inflation, I will do it.”

January 29, 2025 at 6:23 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Republicans Brace for Messy Slog on Capitol Hill

January 29, 2025 at 5:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“House Republicans came here to President Donald Trump’s resort to map out what’s ahead for their legislative agenda. The big takeaway: It’s looking treacherous,” Politico reports.

“Despite progress on the stated goal of the three-day retreat — coalescing around a fiscal blueprint for their vast party-line agenda — what they saw wasn’t pretty: Key strategic disputes continued to fester inside the GOP ranks, and the uproar from Trump’s federal spending freeze gave vulnerable members a taste of the backlash that could result if they follow through on promised cuts to key programs.”

“Together it portends a difficult job ahead for Speaker Mike Johnson as he assembles the votes needed to enact Trump’s policy agenda. Johnson and Trump’s message for the GOP rank-and-file isn’t exactly calibrated to settle their anxieties: stay united, or else.”

January 29, 2025 at 4:57 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Meta Platforms has agreed to pay roughly $25 million to settle a 2021 lawsuit that President Trump brought against the company and its CEO after the social-media platform suspended his accounts following the attacks on the U.S. Capitol that year,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Of that, $22 million will go toward a fund for Trump’s presidential library, with the rest going to legal fees and the other plaintiffs who signed onto the case.”

Justice Department May Drop Case Against Eric Adams

January 29, 2025 at 4:21 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senior Justice Department officials under President Trump have held discussions with federal prosecutors in Manhattan about the possibility of dropping their corruption case against Mayor Eric Adams of New York,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Adams was indicted in September on charges including bribery, fraud and soliciting illegal foreign campaign contributions after an investigation that began in 2021. He has pleaded not guilty, maintained his innocence and contended that he is being prosecuted because he criticized the Biden administration.”

Another Judge Moves to Block Trump’s Spending Freeze

January 29, 2025 at 4:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge said Wednesday he intends to issue a new block on President Donald Trump’s effort to freeze an enormous swath of federal spending, citing the White House’s contradictory signals about the policy,” Politico reports.

Said U.S. District Judge Jack McConnell: “I’m inclined to grant the restraining order. I fear … that the administration is acting with a distinction without a difference.”

“A different federal judge has already put the spending freeze on hold.”

Bob Menendez Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison

January 29, 2025 at 3:52 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) was sentenced to 11 years in prison “for operating what prosecutors called one of the most brazen corruption schemes in the country’s history, with bribes totaling nearly $1 million in cash, checks, gold bars and a Mercedes-Benz,” the Washington Post reports.

The New York Times quotes Judge Sidney Stein: “You were successful, powerful. You stood at the apex of our political system. Somewhere along the way — I don’t know where it was — you lost your way. Working for the public good became working for your good.”

January 29, 2025 at 3:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump Aide Denies Spending Freeze Is Rescinded

January 29, 2025 at 3:32 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House is claiming the Wednesday move by the Office of Management and Budget rescinding a controversial order that froze a wide swath of federal financial assistance is not actually an end to curbing government spending,” The Hill reports.

Said press secretary Karoline Leavitt: “This is NOT a rescission of the federal funding freeze. It is simply a rescission of the OMB memo. Why? To end any confusion created by the court’s injunction. The President’s EO’s on federal funding remain in full force and effect, and will be rigorously implemented.”

Trump to Open Migrant Detention Center at Gitmo

January 29, 2025 at 3:03 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

RFK Jr. Doesn’t Understand Medicaid

January 29, 2025 at 2:58 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said Wednesday ‘most Americans are not happy’ with Medicaid because ‘the premiums are too high,’ suggesting he may be oblivious to the fact that Medicaid overwhelmingly does not have premiums,” the Daily Beast reports.

“In reality, the vast majority of Medicaid enrollees pay nothing for health coverage, which is the point of the program—to insure low-income Americans who cannot afford private health insurance or out-of-pocket costs for medical care.”

Vanity Fair: RFK Jr. proved himself out of his depth—even under friendly Republican questioning.

January 29, 2025 at 2:45 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Federal Reserve held its key interest rate in check Wednesday, reversing a recent trend of easing policy as it examines what is likely to be a bumpy political and economic landscape ahead,” CNBC reports.

“The decision followed three straight cuts since September 2024 worth a full percentage point and marked the first Fed meeting since frequent Fed critic Donald Trump assumed the presidency last week and almost immediately made known his intentions that he wants the central bank to cut rates.”
