‘Secondary Tariffs’ Are Trump’s Latest Trade Weapon

March 25, 2025 at 10:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump appeared to invent a new weapon of economic statecraft on Monday by threatening what he dubbed ‘secondary tariffs’ on countries that buy oil from Venezuela to choke off its oil trade with other nations,” Bloomberg reports.

“The novel approach adds to a growing list of weapons that Trump has been eager to deploy as part of a push to use America’s economic clout as leverage in achieving its foreign and domestic policy goals. The idea seems certain to increase tensions with the Latin American nation over immigration and foreign policy.”

Florida Debates Easing Child Labor Laws

March 25, 2025 at 10:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Florida has been working for years to crack down on employers that hire undocumented immigrants. But that presented a problem for businesses in the state that are desperate for workers to fill low-wage and often undesirable jobs,” CNN reports.

“Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state legislature have a potential solution: children.”

“The state’s legislature on Tuesday is set to debate a bill that would loosen child labor laws, allowing children as young as 14 years old to work overnight shifts. If the new law is passed, teenagers would be able to work overnight jobs on school days.”

GOP Lawmaker Says Russia and China Saw Group Chat

March 25, 2025 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) told CNN there’s “no doubt” that Russia and China were monitoring the U.S. officials’ devices used for a war plan group chat.

Said Bacon: “I will guarantee you, 99.99 percent with confidence, Russia and China are monitoring those two phones. So I just think it’s a security violation, and there’s no doubt that Russia and China saw this stuff within hours of the actual attacks on Yemen or the Houthis.”

He added: “They intentionally put highly classified information on an unclassified device. I would have lost my security clearance in the Air Force for this and for a lot less.”

Trump Is Dismantling the Education Department

March 25, 2025 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump isn’t waiting for Congress to dismantle the Education Department,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Even before his executive order last week directing Education Secretary Linda McMahon ‘to facilitate the closure’ of the agency, the Trump administration had begun picking it apart. Like with several other federal agencies, the moves face court challenges, including two suits announced Monday by labor unions and other progressive groups.”

“With over 4,000 employees as of last year, the Education Department was the smallest cabinet-level agency—and Trump has since reduced its head count by nearly half. The administration also has canceled some small contracts and grants that were designed to fulfill Congressional mandates or spend appropriations.”

Flashback Quote of the Day

“Any unauthorized release of classified information is a violation of the law and will be treated as such.”

— Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard, on X, the day after she took part in a group chat that leaked classified war plans to a journalist.

Trump Stands By His National Security Adviser

March 25, 2025 at 9:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Donald Trump stood by his national security adviser, Mike Waltz, after The Atlantic’s editor-in-chief was accidentally added to a private, high-level chat on the messaging app Signal where military plans were being discussed, NBC News reports.

Said Trump: “Michael Waltz has learned a lesson, and he’s a good man.”

Bill Kristol: “If a scandal comes to light and no one does anything about it—is it a real scandal?”

Danish Leader Raps U.S. for ‘Unacceptable Pressure’

March 25, 2025 at 8:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said a planned visit by U.S. officials to Greenland this week is putting “unacceptable pressure” on the island and on Denmark, Bloomberg reports.

The Most Popular Political Figure in America

March 25, 2025 at 8:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

G. Elliot Morris says the most popular politician in the country right now is Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), with a 46% to 39% favorability rating.

“That’s pretty good, but if you’re trying to think about a candidate who can win back some of the voters Democrats lost from 2020 to 2024, it is notable that Sanders is also net favorable with young people (by nearly 20 points), lower-income voters, moderates, independents, Hispanics, Black voters, and men. And he’s only two points underwater with white voters.”

Columbia’s President Faces Angry Faculty

March 25, 2025 at 8:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Columbia University interim president Katrina Armstrong met with anxious faculty over the weekend in an effort to generate support, warn of the jeopardy the school faces and play down concerns that the deal the school cut with the government on Friday undermined its academic independence,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“In meetings with about 75 faculty leaders, Armstrong and her team said six federal agencies are investigating the school and could pull all federal support from it.”

Social Security Is Breaking Down

March 25, 2025 at 8:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “The Social Security Administration website crashed four times in 10 days this month, blocking millions of retirees and disabled Americans from logging in to their online accounts because the servers were overloaded. In the field, office managers have resorted to answering phones at the front desk as receptionists because so many employees have been pushed out. But the agency no longer has a system to monitor customers’ experience with these services, because that office was eliminated as part of the cost-cutting efforts led by Elon Musk.”

“And the phones keep ringing. And ringing.”

White House Aides Defiant After Group Chat Fiasco

March 25, 2025 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Four top administration officials told Axios they expect the scandal over national security officials sharing war plans on a group chat to die down.

Said one Trump adviser: “We don’t care what the media says. We can easily handle what would kill any other administration. This will blow over.”

Said another: “Trump certainly wasn’t pleased with this. But all this talk you see about Waltz not lasting is just way premature. There’s a Washington feeding frenzy. And we all know that you don’t give the mob what it wants.”

‘We Need a Makeover’

March 25, 2025 at 8:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

TikTok star Katherine Abughazaleh (D), who is just 26 years old, entered the race for a safe Democratic seat in Congress.

Asks Abughazaleh, in her launch video: “What if we didn’t suck?”

Abughazaleh only moved to Illinois last year, but she doesn’t think Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), who is 80 years old, is representing her district well.

Not Everyone Is Caving to Trump

March 25, 2025 at 8:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Last week was rough for Democrats — not because of any electoral setback, but because of the symbolism.

In quick succession, an Ivy League university and a prestigious law firm folded like lawn chairs under pressure from Donald Trump. There was no grand defense of institutional integrity. No push back. Just swift, unceremonious retreat.

But if you want to know what it looks like to fight back, cast your gaze north of the border.

Just two months ago, Canada’s Liberal government appeared on the verge of collapse. Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, often dubbed a Canadian version of Trump (a comparison he’s been desperate to shake), looked poised to cruise to power.

Not anymore.

According to the latest projections from 338Canada, the political winds have shifted sharply. The Liberals now have a 55% chance of winning a majority and a 44% chance of forming a minority government.

The odds of a Conservative majority? Almost nonexistent.

What changed?

For one, Justin Trudeau stepped aside. After nearly a decade in power, Trudeau had become a magnet for the kind of anti-incumbent sentiment sweeping across much of the industrialized world. (As Paul Krugman recently pointed out, Canada’s inflation was largely identical to that of the U.S. — but Trudeau bore the political cost.)

Enter Mark Carney.

The former Bank of Canada governor — and now new prime minister — took a bold gamble: He made resisting Trump central to his campaign. Framing the upcoming Canadian election not just as a national choice but as a bulwark against Trump’s calls to annex his country, Carney flipped the script.

And if the polls are to be believed, it’s working.

The contrast with recent events in the U.S. couldn’t be more stark. While powerful institutions here appear unwilling — or unable — to stand up to Trump, Canada’s new leader is gaining ground by doing exactly that.

It’s a reminder that, sometimes, the way to beat a bully is to stand your ground. And voters might just reward you for it.

Are Republicans Blowing a Florida Special Election?

March 25, 2025 at 7:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Punchbowl News: “House Republicans shouldn’t have to worry about Florida’s 6th District special election on April 1. It’s a deep-red seat that former Rep. Michael Waltz (R-FL) won by 33 points five months ago before decamping for the Trump administration.”

“But many GOP officials are concerned that Republican candidate Randy Fine’s lackluster fundraising and sky-high Democratic enthusiasm could put the race in uncomfortably close territory.”

“Fine, a GOP state legislator, has raised just under $1 million since entering the race and has just $93,000 on hand. Meanwhile, Democratic candidate Josh Weil has brought in a stunning $9 million and has $1.2 million on hand.”

Wealthy Americans both in the U.S. and abroad are drawing up contingency plans to move assets to Switzerland, the Financial Times reports.

David Jolly Mulls Run for Florida Governor

March 25, 2025 at 7:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“David Jolly, the former representative whose sharp disagreements with President Donald Trump led him to leave the Republican Party, is considering running for governor of Florida,” Politico reports.

“Jolly is weighing whether to enter the race as a Democrat despite Republicans building a formidable advantage in the once-swing state under Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis.”

Portrait of Trump Will Be Removed

March 25, 2025 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A painting of Donald Trump hanging with other presidential portraits at the Colorado state Capitol will be taken down after Trump claimed that his was “purposefully distorted,” the AP reports.
