Bolton’s Lawyers Talking to Impeachment Investigators

October 25, 2019 at 9:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Lawyers for former national security advisor John Bolton have been in touch with officials working on the House committees conducting an impeachment probe into President Trump, NBC News reports.

“The news comes more than a week after the White House’s former top Europe expert, Fiona Hill, testified to Congress that Bolton has been so disturbed by efforts to get Ukraine to investigate Trump’s political opponents that he called it a ‘drug deal.'”

When the White House was asked about Bolton by CNBC, an official said: “We’re not going to talk about Bolton.”

October 25, 2019 at 9:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Tim Morrison, a National Security Council official who has been identified as a witness to one of the most explosive pieces of evidence unearthed by House impeachment investigators, plans to testify Thursday even if the White House attempts to block him,” Politico reports.

“Morrison would be the first currently serving White House official to testify. He’s also the first official believed to be on a July 25 phone call between President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during which Trump pressed his counterpart to investigate former vice president Joe Biden.”

Testifying Can Cost Witnesses $15,000 or More

October 25, 2019 at 9:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “On civil-servant salaries, they have racked up bills of $15,000 or more for lawyers who can guide them through the morning-to-dusk sessions before congressional inquisitors. Already caught in a struggle between two branches of government, many are now worried about how to pay for legal advice that can cost $750 to $1,500 an hour.”

Small Donors Become ‘Super Donors’

October 25, 2019 at 8:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Wall Street Journal analysis of Federal Election Commission data found that at least 1,900 people contributed 50 times or more to a single presidential candidate through the end of September. The Sanders campaign laid claim to the majority of these ‘super donors,’ the Journal found, with about 1,000 of them. The other Democrats in the race combined for at least 650 ultra-repeat givers, led by Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who had at least 125. And President Trump’s re-election campaign, which began in 2017, has at least 250.”

“The super donor trend is fueled by the increasing ease of giving money online—sometimes by clicking a single button or through automated recurring payments—and the premium that this year’s presidential candidates have placed on having a high volume of tiny donations, which they use as a proxy for grass roots support.”

O’Rourke Expects Americans to Surrender Their Guns

October 25, 2019 at 8:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Beto O’Rourke dismissed criticisms of his sweeping gun control proposal, telling CBS News that he expects gun owners will go along with his plan to institute a “mandatory buyback” of high-powered rifles.

Said O’Rourke: “If we’re able to pass mandatory buybacks and I’m able to sign that into law, then I fully expect our fellow Americans to turn in their AR-15s and their AK-47s.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

October 25, 2019 at 8:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Does he need to be so unhinged? He says the dumbest things. Yeah, there needs to be a coordinated response to everything. There needs to be a coordinated effort to just shut up.”

— A Republican senator, quoted by The Hill, venting frustration with President Trump’s handling of the impeachment probe.

Gabbard Skips Iowa Forum to Appear on Fox News

October 25, 2019 at 8:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Iowa Starting Line: “Rep. Tulsi Gabbard’s bizarre week in American politics continued Thursday night, when she skipped an appearance at LULAC’s Latino town hall in Des Moines, appearing that evening instead on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show. There, she criticized House Democrats’ impeachment process, a reversal of her recent stance on the matter.”

The anonymous “senior Trump administration official” who will release a tell-all book, A Warning, next month was a frequent participant in meetings with President Trump and plans to recount specific conversations, sources tell Mike Allen.

From the book’s back cover: “You will hear a great deal from Donald Trump directly, for there is no better witness to his character than his own words.”

Also interesting: “The author of the book, which hit #1 on Amazon within 24 hours of its announcement, has agreed to at least one interview with a journalist to coincide with publication, 25 days from now. The format and interviewer haven’t been decided.”

Exchange of the Day

October 25, 2019 at 8:10 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Biden was interviewed by Norah O’Donnell on 60 Minutes:

O’DONNELL: Do you still consider yourself the frontrunner?

BIDEN: I know I’m the frontrunner. Find me a national poll with a notable – a couple exceptions. The last four that have come out – but look, this is a marathon. This is a marathon.

O’DONNELL: You have less than $9 million in the bank. Bernie Sanders has $30 – nearly $34 million in the bank. Sen. Warren has $26 million. How do you compete against that?

BIDEN: I just flat beat them. We’re on a course to do extremely well. I’m not worried about being able to fund this campaign. I really am not, truly.

Trump Creates an Impeachment War Room

October 25, 2019 at 8:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Top Trump officials have quietly created a de facto impeachment war room, with a chief goal of policing and solidifying Republican Senate support for acquittal,” Axios reports.

“Most senior officials in the White House recognized quickly that the G7 and Syria decisions harmed the president’s standing with Senate Republicans, and realized that could bleed over and cause problems for their impeachment firewall.”

“For the past several weeks, senior Trump White House officials have held a near-daily meeting focused on messaging — not the legal side of the impeachment fight, per three sources familiar with the situation.”

Katie Hill Threatens Legal Action Over Nude Photos

October 25, 2019 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Attorneys for Rep. Katie Hill on Thursday threatened to bring legal action against a British tabloid for posting what it claims are nude photos of the freshman California Democrat. Hill’s legal team — Marc Elias and Rachael Jacobs of the firm Perkins Coie — also suggested Hill was defamed over allegations by the Daily Mail that she has a Nazi-inspired tattoo on her body.”

Trump Confronts Limits of His Impeachment Defense

October 25, 2019 at 7:16 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Privately, White House officials concede they are losing the messaging battle with Democrats, whose inquiry has produced a series of devastating revelations about allegations that the president and his allies conducted a campaign to pressure Ukraine for his own political gain.”

Associated Press: “Asked about criticism that the White House lacks a coordinated pushback effort and could do a better job delivering its message, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said, ‘It’s hard to message anything that’s going on behind closed doors and in secret.’ ‘It’s like you’re fighting a ghost, you’re fighting against the air. So we’re doing the best we can.””

Giuliani Probe Snowballs

October 25, 2019 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The scrutiny of Rudy Giuliani isn’t just coming from the previously known probes by FBI agents and the U.S. attorney’s office based out of Manhattan… The criminal division of the Justice Department in Washington has taken an interest in the former New York mayor, too, meaning an expansion of resources that indicates the politically sensitive probe into the president’s personal attorney is both broader and moving at a faster pace than previously understood.”

October 25, 2019 at 6:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-HI) announced she will not run for re-election and will focus her efforts on her presidential campaign, the Washington Post reports.

Quote of the Day

— Sen. Bernie Sanders, quoted by the Associated Press.

100 Days Until the Iowa Caucuses

October 25, 2019 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This weekend, Democrats will mark 100 days until the Iowa caucuses,” the Washington Post reports.

“Some years, and some campaigns, have minimized Iowa’s importance. This year is different: Every campaign’s strategy starts with Iowa, with visits there far outpacing visits to other early-voting states. Every campaign has more offices in Iowa than in other primary states, while two candidates (Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and former Texas congressman Beto O’Rourke) have more offices in Iowa than in the next three states put together.”

Vulnerable Republicans Shrink from Defending Trump

October 24, 2019 at 11:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans facing steep re-election races next year know the impeachment inquiry coursing steadily ahead on the other side of the Capitol will determine President Trump’s political fate. Their growing fear is that it will also determine their own,” the New York Times reports.

“In a matter of weeks, those few senators have watched helplessly as the investigation by House Democrats has lobbed a grenade into the middle of their campaigns, putting them on the defensive amid a torrent of damaging revelations about the president’s conduct with no clear end in sight.”
