Trump Steered $20 Million to Jack Nicklaus Project

March 13, 2019 at 6:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House’s proposed budget includes funding for a small children’s health program sought by one of President Donald Trump’s golfing buddies: Jack Nicklaus,” Politico reports.

“Nicklaus had lobbied Trump on the golf course in Florida, and he met with HHS Secretary Alex Azar and then-OMB Director Mick Mulvaney in Washington, D.C., to request funds, say two individuals with knowledge. Trump personally directed HHS to earmark the funds to help Nicklaus develop mobile children’s hospitals, one individual said.”

Pence Takes GOP Punches for Trump

March 13, 2019 at 6:15 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In recent months, Pence has repeatedly found himself an even-tempered target for prominent Republicans needing to vent about Trump’s unorthodox style,” Politico reports.

Said Sen. John Thune (R-SD): “When he comes up here, unfortunately for him, he gets to be kind of the person that people take out some of their frustrations out on. But that’s a part of the job.”

“That has become more and more true of late. In multiple encounters with Republicans on Capitol Hill, on issues ranging from Syria to the government shutdown, Pence has swallowed his personal views, which have historically been far more in line with the GOP establishment than are Trump’s.”

Federal Grand Jury Issues Subpoenas in North Carolina

March 12, 2019 at 8:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal grand jury is examining allegations of ballot fraud in a North Carolina congressional race, issuing subpoenas this month that represent the first public evidence that U.S. prosecutors are investigating the matter,” the Washington Post reports.

“Officials with the North Carolina State Board of Elections and a lawyer for former Republican congressional candidate Mark Harris confirmed Tuesday that they had received subpoenas from the Justice Department’s Public Integrity Section seeking all documents related to allegations of election fraud in the 9th congressional district.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

March 12, 2019 at 4:26 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I appreciate the energy when I got up here. Save it a little longer — I may need it in a few weeks.”

— Joe Biden, quoted by ABC News, welcomed to the International Association of Fire Fighters legislative conference with chants of “Run, Joe, Run!”

British prime minister Theresa May’s Brexit deal has been defeated again in Parliament by 391 votes to 242, a majority of 149.

Congress Probing Whether Trump ‘Dangled’ Pardons

March 12, 2019 at 3:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA) tweeted that Congress is currently probing reports that President Trump “privately dangled” presidential pardons in an alleged attempt to obstruct investigations into his conduct.

Schiff did not specify when the pardons were allegedly privately offered, or whom they concerned.

But he said: “Yesterday, the White House refused to rule out a pardon for Paul Manafort. That Trump does so in the open is no less corrupt.”

Quote of the Day

March 12, 2019 at 3:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Airplanes are becoming far too complex to fly. Pilots are no longer needed, but rather computer scientists from MIT. I see it all the time in many products. Always seeking to go one unnecessary step further, when often old and simpler is far better. Split second decisions needed, and the complexity creates danger. All of this for great cost yet very little gain. I don’t know about you, but I don’t want Albert Einstein to be my pilot.”

— President Trump, on Twitter.

Trump Insider Says GOP Not Ready for Investigations

March 12, 2019 at 3:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Trump adviser David Bossie told ABC News that a growing realization is taking hold of Republican Washington that the conclusion of special counsel Robert Mueller’s probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 campaign will only be the start of investigatory pressures on the White House.

There will be need, he said, to address the inquiries as they migrate from the Department of Justice to Capitol Hill. Both the administration and the Republican team in Congress now clearly recognize they need reinforcements.

Pelosi Revokes Pence’s House Office Space

March 12, 2019 at 3:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) has reclaimed office space her predecessor, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) awarded to Vice President Pence, NPR reports.

“Republicans gave Pence, a former House member, a first-floor bonus office in the U.S. Capitol shortly after President Trump was inaugurated in 2017. The vice president rarely used the space, but it was a symbolic gesture of the warm relationship Pence enjoyed with Ryan and the House GOP.”

GOP Lawmaker Claims Vote Against Trump Emergency

March 12, 2019 at 2:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In letters sent to around 30 constituents on Monday, Rep. Denver Riggleman (R-VA) incorrectly claimed he voted last month to block President Trump’s declaration of emergency,” TPM reports.

“In fact, Riggleman joined the vast majority of his House Republican colleagues in supporting Trump’s declaration, which the President used to secure more border wall money than Congress authorized.”

Trump Will Close International Immigration Offices

March 12, 2019 at 2:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is preparing to shutter all 21 international offices of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, a move that could slow the processing of family visa applications, foreign adoptions and citizenship petitions from members of the military,” the Washington Post reports.

Biden Tells Lawmaker He’s Running

March 12, 2019 at 12:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Joe Biden will run for president in 2020, a senior Democratic lawmaker told The Hill on Tuesday, a move that will shake up the crowded Democratic primary field and make him the clear frontrunner for his party’s nomination against President Trump.

We May Be Focusing on the Wrong Mueller Report

March 12, 2019 at 11:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Daily Beast: “There may in fact be two Mueller reports. This is because from the very beginning, Mueller has worn two hats and borne two missions relating to the Russia investigation.”

“The most public and familiar one is as a criminal investigator under the special counsel regulations. But Mueller has also carried a second charge, as a counterintelligence expert, with a much broader charge to determine and report the scope of any interference and any links to the Trump campaign—what Trump himself might refer to as ‘collusion.'”

“From the start, then, Mueller has been conducting a counterintelligence investigation, while ‘also’ assessing whether any crimes were committed. Not the other way around.”

Trump Tried to Force Jared and Ivanka to Quit

March 12, 2019 at 11:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

According to a new book, Kushner Inc., which is reviewed in the New York Times, President Trump complained that his daughter Ivanka and his son-in-law Jared Kushner “didn’t know how to play the game” and kept attracting negative press.

White House chief of staff John Kelly reportedly said it would look bad to fire them so they decided to make life difficult enough to force Kushner and Ivanka to resign. The plan didn’t work.

One other interesting tidbit: “Ivanka and Kushner kept getting refused travel on Air Force planes—but found a workaround by inviting along a Cabinet secretary, often Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, to get access to the government flights.”

Bernie’s Support Scatters In Big Field

March 12, 2019 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “Forty-six percent — that’s the percentage of Democrats who backed Bernie Sanders in 2016 who say that they’ll support him in 2020, according to a new Monmouth University poll.”

“And that’s compared with just 14 percent of Democrats who backed Hillary Clinton in the last election who say they’re getting behind Sanders for the upcoming nomination fight.”

“With about half of his previous coalition scattering between other candidates like Joe Biden (15 percent), Kamala Harris (8 percent) and Elizabeth Warren (6 percent), it’s not clear that Sanders will enjoy the same level of support from Democrats four years after his insurgent bid. But, the pollsters note, that assessment assumes that Biden is in the mix — and maintains his expected high levels of backing from Dems after he gets in.”

U.S. Withdraws Embassy Personnel from Venezuela

March 12, 2019 at 8:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The United States announced late Monday that it is pulling the remaining staff from its embassy in Venezuela, citing the deteriorating situation in the South American nation,” Politico reports.

“The U.S. has led an international effort to oust socialist President Nicolas Maduro and replace him with opposition leader Juan Guaido, who vows to hold a new presidential election. Guaido is backed by some 50 countries, while Maduro maintains support from countries such as China, Russia and Cuba.”

O’Rourke May Have Recruited Top Iowa Operative

March 12, 2019 at 8:41 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News: “Iowa Democratic political circles were also abuzz Monday with word that O’Rourke may have recruited a top Iowa political consultant and Hawkeye state native onto his potential campaign team.”

“Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price told NBC News that Norm Sterzenbach had left his role as a consultant with the party on Friday after launching its caucus operations for 2020, including the formation of virtual caucuses that will allow Iowans to participate if they are out of state on the day of the vote.”

“Sterzenbach, who formerly served as the state party’s executive director, left his position to join the efforts of a potential presidential candidate’s team.”

Pollsters Struggle with Huge 2020 Field

March 12, 2019 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “The logjam of nearly two dozen declared or likely Democratic presidential candidates is overwhelming public pollsters trying to measure the 2020 primary. New surveys are cramming up to 23 Democrats into their questionnaires after the [DNC] set a low, 1 percent polling threshold to gain admittance into the party’s first primary debates.”

“The miles-long list of candidates has created an unusual set of methodological challenges for pollsters already battling declining engagement with their surveys. But pollsters say the criteria also put them in a no-win situation: A pollster’s decision about whether to include a candidate or not could be a make-or-break choice for that campaign, especially the lesser-known and first-time White House hopefuls hoping to make the debate stage.”
