Trump Faces Failing Strategy on Auto Jobs

March 20, 2019 at 7:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump heads to Ohio Wednesday embroiled in a fight with General Motors and the United Auto Workers over the closing of GM’s Lordstown plant. But his attempts to save manufacturing jobs have battered the auto industry and could erode his loyal base in the Midwest,” Politico reports.

“Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum have cost Ford and GM about $1 billion each… Potentially making things even worse, Trump is now weighing new tariffs on foreign automobiles that could threaten hundreds of thousands of additional U.S. jobs.”

Trump’s Growing List of Grievances

March 20, 2019 at 7:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump aired a litany of grievances on Tuesday, claiming he has a ‘stacked deck’ against him in 2020, putting down his top aide’s husband as a ‘total loser’ and renewing his attacks on the late Sen. John McCain,” Politico reports.

“The comments capped another eyebrow-raising few days for Trump, even by the standards of a man who has regularly flouted the conventions of the presidency. On Sunday alone, Trump sent out 29 tweets and retweets that touched on everything from General Motors to his media criticism of Fox News — a consequence, people close to him say, of another isolated weekend in the White House.”

Trump Tax Cuts Won’t Power Growth He Promised

March 20, 2019 at 7:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration pushed a $1.5 trillion tax cut through Congress in 2017 on the promise that it would spark sustained economic growth. While the tax cuts have goosed the economy in the short term, officials now concede they will not be enough to deliver the 3 percent annual growth the president promised over the long term,” the New York Times reports.

“To produce that average growth rate for the next decade, White House forecasters say, the American economy would need additional rollbacks in labor regulations, a $1 trillion infrastructure plan and another round of tax cuts.”

“Getting all those policies implemented would be highly unlikely, given a divided Congress and a ballooning federal deficit, which could limit lawmakers’ appetite to spend money on a new tax cut or infrastructure plan.”

Clyburn Calls Trump Family Threat to Democracy

March 20, 2019 at 6:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. James Clyburn (D-S.C.) called President Trump and his family “the greatest threats to democracy of my lifetime,” saying Congress needed to do more to respond to the president’s attempts to undermine American institutions, NBC News reports.

Said Clyburn: “Adolf Hitler was elected chancellor of Germany. And he went about the business of discrediting institutions to the point that people bought into’ it… Nobody would have believed it now. But swastikas hung in churches throughout Germany. We had better be very careful.”

Shifting Hopes as Everyone Waits for Mueller

March 20, 2019 at 6:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “With Robert Mueller’s findings expected any day, the president has grown increasingly confident the report will produce what he insisted all along — no clear evidence of a conspiracy between Russia and his 2016 campaign. And Trump and his advisers are considering how to weaponize those possible findings for the 2020 race.”

“A change is underway as well among congressional Democrats, who have long believed the report would offer damning evidence against the president. The Democrats are busy building new avenues for evidence to come out, opening a broad array of investigations of Trump’s White House and businesses that go far beyond Mueller’s focus on Russian interference to help Trump beat Democrat Hillary Clinton.”

World Leaders Urge Biden to Run

March 20, 2019 at 6:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “In several conversations with European leaders in Munich, Biden heard a repeated refrain, according to a conference attendee familiar with the conversations: The world needs you. Citing Biden’s long foreign policy track record and longtime commitment to the trans-Atlantic alliance, some of the leaders — echoing views from across the continent — told Biden that his return to the White House would be a sure way to restore western alliances that President Trump has dramatically fractured.”

May Asks for Brexit Delay

March 20, 2019 at 6:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Theresa May will be forced to write to EU leaders on Wednesday and beg them to delay Brexit, with her cabinet deadlocked over the best way out of what Downing Street now concedes is a “crisis,'” The Guardian reports.

“Ministers discussed Brexit for about 90 minutes at what several sources said was a testy cabinet meeting on Tuesday.”

“Insiders said opinion was more or less evenly divided, between those who favoured requesting a short, three-month extension, leaving in place the prospect of a no-deal Brexit in the summer, and those who want to see a much longer delay. Several sources said ministers emerged from cabinet unclear about what May’s personal position was on the best way forward.”

Bharara Considered Taping Phone Call With Trump

March 20, 2019 at 2:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara told MSNBC that he considered taping a phone call with President Trump after the president made an “odd” request of him.

Said Bharara: “We actually considered—and it sounds not as crazy as it did back then cause now we know about Michael Cohen recording the president, and Omarosa recording the president—we considered taping the president in that phone call.”

Bharara also said he believed that Deputy Attorney General Rob Rosenstein was “not joking” when he suggested wearing a recording device to secretly tape Trump when he visited the White House.

Trump’s Close Ties With Fox News Fraying

March 20, 2019 at 2:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Gabriel Sherman: “Donald Trump’s alliance with Fox News has been one of the few constants throughout his shambolic presidency. But in recent days, that bond has shown signs of fraying.”

“Trump’s attacks on Fox have widened the chasm between the network’s opinion hosts and the news division, which have been fighting a cold civil war since Roger Ailes was ousted in July 2016.”

“The outcome of that civil war will be decided by Fox Corporation chairman and C.E.O. Lachlan Murdoch. Rupert’s oldest son took over the smaller media company that emerged out of the Murdochs’ $71 billion deal to sell their entertainment assets to Disney. Though Lachlan hired West Wing stalwart Hope Hicks, staffers believe he is likely to nudge the network away from its close marriage to Trump. Sources close to Lachlan pointed out that Lachlan is a libertarian conservative, not a MAGA diehard, who in private has expressed annoyance at Trump.”

Mueller’s Team Says It’s Very Busy This Week

March 20, 2019 at 2:11 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Robert Mueller’s prosecutors dropped yet another head-scratching signal in their latest court filing Tuesday that the special counsel investigation may be wrapping up — or maybe it’s not,” CNN reports.

“Either way, they’re very busy.”

“Senior appellate litigator Michael Dreeben told a federal judge on Tuesday that he and his co-counsel ‘face the press of other work’ and would like a deadline extension this week in response to a request to unseal court documents in Paul Manafort’s now-wrapped criminal case.”

Reagan’s Daughter Says He’d Be ‘Horrified’ By Trump

March 20, 2019 at 2:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Patti Davis, the daughter of the late President Ronald Reagan, told Yahoo News that her father would be “horrified” by the state of the U.S. and the Republican Party under President Trump.

Said Davis: “I think he would be horrified. I think he would be heartbroken — because he loved this country a lot and he believed in this country.”

Trump Says Cities Would Run U.S. Under Popular Vote

March 20, 2019 at 1:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump tweeted that campaigning for the popular vote is “much easier” than campaigning for electoral votes.

Said Trump: “Campaigning for the Popular Vote is much easier & different than campaigning for the Electoral College. It’s like training for the 100 yard dash vs. a marathon.”

He added that “Cities would end up running the Country” without the Electoral College and that the current system “is far better for the U.S.A.”

Biden Tells Donors He’s Running

March 19, 2019 at 6:51 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Vice President Joe Biden reached out to at least a half-dozen supporters Tuesday to tell them he intends to run for president and to ask for their help in lining up contributions from major donors so he can quickly raise several million dollars,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Mr. Biden has expressed concern to these people that he wouldn’t be able to raise millions of dollars in online donations immediately the way some other Democratic candidates have.”

— Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, quoted by CNN, when asked how long he plans on staying in the role.

Trump Spends Big on Facebook and Google Ads

March 19, 2019 at 6:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“While Democrats’ campaign launches have sucked up national attention, President Trump’s re-election campaign has quietly spent nearly twice as much as the entire Democratic field combined on Facebook and Google ads,” Axios reports.

“Political advertising strategists say that this level of ad spend on digital platforms this early in the campaign season is unprecedented. The data (captured between December 2018 and now) provides a window into the Trump campaign’s 2020 strategy, which until now has been virtually invisible aside from a few rallies.”

Gun-Toting Candidate Vows He’s Got Trump’s Back

March 19, 2019 at 6:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Raleigh News and Observer: “One of 17 candidates vying for the Republican nomination in North Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District special election will begin airing television ads in the Greenville market Tuesday.”

“In the ad, Eric Rouse (R) is seen skeet shooting — hitting clays with Democratic priorities like the Green New Deal written on them in the 30-second ad. It closes with Rouse cocking a gun and vowing to have President Trump’s back if elected.”

Trump Has a Losing Record In Court

March 19, 2019 at 6:18 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Federal judges have ruled against the Trump administration at least 63 times over the past two years, an extraordinary record of legal defeat that has stymied large parts of the president’s agenda on the environment, immigration and other matters.”

“In case after case, judges have rebuked Trump officials for failing to follow the most basic rules of governance, including providing legitimate explanations for shifts in policy, supported by facts and, where required, public input.”

Judges Lean Toward Trump In Emoluments Case

March 19, 2019 at 6:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A three-judge U.S. appeals court panel signaled sympathy toward President Donald Trump on Tuesday in his appeal in a Democratic-backed lawsuit that accuses him of violating anti-corruption provisions of the U.S. Constitution with his Washington hotel,” Reuters reports.

“The judges on the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals indicated they may dismiss the lawsuit filed against the Republican president in June 2017 by the Democratic attorneys general of Maryland and the District of Columbia.”

“Maryland-based U.S. District Judge Peter Messitte last year allowed the lawsuit to proceed, a ruling that Trump appealed to the 4th Circuit. All three of the judges who heard the appeal were appointed by Republican presidents.”
