Gulf of Fear

March 24, 2025 at 11:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Oliver Darcy: “When the eyes of the world fixated on the stranded NASA astronauts being rescued and touching down back on Earth, every channel danced around what precisely to call the body of water they splashed into.”

“A review of transcripts revealed an alarming reality: not one of the outlets could muster up the courage to simply refer to it as the Gulf of Mexico, the water feature’s name since the 16th century.”

“Instead, television news organizations tied themselves in knots, performing linguistic gymnastics to stay out of Donald Trump’s crosshairs, while also tiptoeing around audiences who would have surely been incensed to see them bend the knee and call it the ‘Gulf of America.'”

Trump’s Agenda Remains Stuck on Capitol Hill

March 24, 2025 at 11:06 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congressional Republicans left Washington riding high after their big victory on government spending. Now they’re returning to face a brutal reality check: Their legislative agenda is going nowhere fast,” Politico reports.

“Now months into the process, House and Senate Republicans are still trading barbs and accusing each side of slowing down progress on President Donald Trump’s top legislative priority — a sweeping bill linking a tax overhaul to energy, defense and border policies.”

Greenland Denounces Upcoming Trip by Trump Officials

March 24, 2025 at 11:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Greenland’s prime minister slammed an upcoming trip to the island by Second Lady Usha Vance and other U.S. officials as “aggressive” and a clear show of power, Axios reports.

Said Prime Minister Múte Egede: “We are now at a level where it can in no way be characterized as a harmless visit from a politician’s wife.”

The Abundance Democrats Need

March 24, 2025 at 10:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson’s new book, Abundance, has quickly become the talk of the wonk class — a sweeping attempt to offer Democrats a new north star after years of defensiveness.

Their central thesis is refreshingly straightforward: We can do more, build more, make more — if only we clear away the bureaucratic underbrush that stifles progress.

They’re bullish on housing (build a lot more of it), on clean energy (solar, geothermal and nuclear), and on agriculture (think vertical farms and lab grown meats).

It’s an appealing, optimistic vision — a rebuttal to scarcity politics with an embrace of recent rapid advances in technology.

They call it the “abundance agenda.”

But you don’t get abundance with ideas alone. You need power — raw, durable, unapologetic political power. And that’s where the book runs aground.

Because despite all the clever policy blueprints, Democrats still behave like a party that’s uneasy with power. They too often bring a knifes to gun fights.

They want a thriving future, but are squeamish about doing what it takes to deliver it.

Klein and Thompson paint a compelling picture of what progress could look like.

But they skip over the hard, often unglamorous work of political combat that makes any of it possible.

The Judiciary’s Last Stand

March 24, 2025 at 10:00 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Tom Nichols: “President Donald Trump is at war with the rule of law in the United States. His assault is already the most hostile and sustained political attack on America’s legal and law-enforcement institutions since the Civil War. It is a war he declared before he began his first term, and one he pursued with tenacity once in office. It even had its own call to arms on January 6, 2021, or so many of his supporters believed.”

“Exiled temporarily from the White House, Trump spent four years vowing to continue this war if he were reelected, and he has made good on that promise, targeting the foundations of almost every institution of law and justice within his reach as the chief executive.”

Don Jr. Joins Board of GrabAGun

“A slew of conservative politicians and gun activists, including Donald Trump Jr., and investor Blake Masters, are joining the board of GrabAGun, a digital firearms retailer that plans to go public this summer,” Axios reports.

Trump Praises Jeff Bezos

March 24, 2025 at 9:20 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jeff Bezos is “a good guy,” Trump told Clay Travis over the weekend.

Said Trump: “I didn’t really know him in the first term. I mean, it’s such a difference between now and the first time.”

He also said Bezos bashed his Washington Post în their private meeting: “They actually did a couple of bad articles on him. He said, ‘This is crazy, I lose my fortune running this thing and they, you know, they’re out of control.’ These people are crazy. They’re crazy people. They’re out of control.”

Trump Demands Colorado Take Down Painting

March 24, 2025 at 9:09 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump is demanding that Colorado take down its “purposefully distorted” painting of him hanging in the State Capitol, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “Nobody likes a bad picture or painting of themselves, but the one in Colorado, in the State Capitol put up by the Governor, along with all other Presidents, was purposefully distorted to a level that even I, perhaps, have never seen before.”

He added: “I am speaking on their behalf to the Radical Left Governor, Jared Polis, who is extremely weak on Crime, in particular with respect to Tren de Aragua, which practically took over Aurora (Don’t worry, we saved it!), to take it down. Jared should be ashamed of himself.”

Johnson Weighs Options to Punish ‘Activist Judges‘

March 24, 2025 at 8:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson is trying to chart a “middle ground” on punishing judges who rule against President Trump, as some in his conference “express unease with going as far as impeaching judges.”

A Big Week for Trump’s Agenda

March 24, 2025 at 8:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune will meet on Tuesday along with House and Senate committee leaders to begin working out the differences between their budget resolutions paving the way for passing President Trump’s agenda through reconciliation, Punchbowl News reports.

U.S. Could Breach Debt Limit in July

March 24, 2025 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Treasury Department will likely exhaust its borrowing authority — leading the federal government to default on some of its obligations — as soon as mid-July, according to a Bipartisan Policy Center projection.

The date is dependent on how much the IRS collects in tax revenue by mid-April.

Trump’s Policies Attack His Own Base

March 24, 2025 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “Donald Trump is often described as a ‘populist.’ Yet his administration is stuffed with wealthy men who are clueless about how the other 99.99 percent lives, while his policies involve undermining the working class while enabling wealthy tax cheats.”

“What is true is that many working-class voters supported Trump last year because they believed that he was on their side. And that disconnect between perceptions and reality ought to be at the heart of any discussion of what Democrats should do now.”

China Is Ready to Blockade Taiwan

March 24, 2025 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“China’s armed forces are more ready than ever to surround the self-ruled island of Taiwan, cut it off from the world and try to squeeze it into submission,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“A Chinese blockade of Taiwan would be an act of war that sparks a global crisis. It would provoke a military response by Taiwan, force President Trump to decide whether the U.S. military should help defend the island, disrupt global trade and impel European nations to impose punishing sanctions on Beijing.”

Deportations Haven’t Surged Under Trump

March 24, 2025 at 7:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In the first two months of President Trump’s immigration crackdown, the administration has taken new and unusual measures to conduct deportations. It has enlisted military planes, pressured other countries to retrieve their citizens, sent people to third countries far from their homes, and invoked a wartime law to remove migrants without due process,” the New York Times reports.

“But even as immigration officials have escalated efforts to remove people from the United States, they continue to fall short of the mass deportations Mr. Trump vowed to carry out. Overall, the number of flights and their destinations look largely similar to those under President Joseph Biden.

Los Angeles Times: “The families of two Venezuelans deported to El Salvador say the Trump administration wrongly branded them as Tren de Aragua gang members.”

Democrats’ Dark, Deep Hole

March 24, 2025 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Axios: “Doug Sosnik — a senior adviser to President Bill Clinton, and widely followed thinker on political megatrends — told us this is Dems’ deepest hole in at least the 45 years since Ronald Reagan’s victory in 1980. Sosnik said the 2024 election was at least as much a repudiation of Democrats as it was a victory for Trump.”

“Democrats’ dismal reality is not Republican spin. In fact, there’s broad consensus among Democratic leaders that most current political, cultural, media and generational trends are cutting against them.”

Trump’s Assault on Elites Is All Encompassing

March 24, 2025 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stephen Collinson: “President Donald Trump is escalating his multi-front assault on what supporters see as an elite establishment, using raw presidential power to bend the government, law, media, public health, foreign policy, education and even the arts to his will.”

“Trump left no doubt in last year’s campaign that he’d use executive authority to seek retribution against his political enemies. But his attempt to transform America’s politics and culture is far broader than a personal revenge trip.”

“He’s targeting Ivy League universities; using executive authority against top law firms; eviscerating the bureaucracy; rejecting 80 years of elite orthodoxy about American global leadership; and using tariffs to shatter the global trading system that Make America Great Again proponents regard as the self-enriching treachery of global elites.”

Musk and Trump Ratchet Up Involvement in Wisconsin

March 24, 2025 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump and billionaire adviser Elon Musk are going all-in on flipping control of Wisconsin’s top court, with Trump endorsing the conservative in the race and Musk’s PAC hunting for votes by offering state residents cash for their contact details,” the Washington Post reports.

“The burst of support comes as Trump faces his first test with swing-state voters in the April 1 election since winning a second term in November. The court is expected to decide the future of abortion in the state and could redraw a congressional map that has given Republicans six of the state’s eight seats.”
