Trump Attacks Kavanaugh Accuser

September 25, 2018 at 12:21 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump called the allegations of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh “a con game being played by the Democrats,” the Washington Post reports.

He disputed the New Yorker report that Deborah Ramirez, a classmate of Kavanaugh’s at Yale, said he exposed himself at a party when they were both first-year students.

Said Trump: “The second accuser has nothing. She thinks maybe it could have been him, maybe not. She admits that she was drunk. She admits that there are time lapses…She said well it might not be him, and there were gaps, and she was totally inebriated and all messed up.”

Love Says Democrats Attack Because She Is Black

September 25, 2018 at 12:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) has a theory for why Democrats are targeting her seat — and it’s not because her Democratic opponent, Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams (D), has pulled within single digits in numerous polls, Roll Call reports.

It’s because, she is black, Republican, and successful.

Said Love: “They do not like the fact that I am a black female Republican doing everything I possibly can to talk about the issues that help people go from the lowest common denominator up.”

Quote of the Day

September 25, 2018 at 12:02 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Perhaps Brett Kavanaugh was a virgin for many years after high school. But he claimed otherwise in a conversation with me during our freshman year in Lawrance Hall at Yale, in the living room of my suite.”

— Steve Kantrowitz, a Yale classmate of Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, on Twitter.

Trump Rejects Globalism In United Nations Speech

September 25, 2018 at 11:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump declared that his administration will reject attempts from other nations to impose constraints on the United States, vowing to take action in world affairs based on his judgment over how it would benefit Americans,” the Washington Post reports.

“Trump issued sharp warning to the leaders Iran, Syria, Venezuela and China over what he described as their rogue behavior. But the president also made clear that the United States under his leadership would not be bound in its affairs by the consensus among traditional allies and partners.”

USA Today: “In an awkward moment, minutes into his speech, the delegates in the chamber appeared to laugh at a regular talking point from the president. Trump said his administration had accomplished more than any other in U.S. history, prompting the surprise reaction from the general assembly hall.”

Said Trump: “So true. I didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s okay.”

The Stakes for Republicans Go Way Beyond Kavanaugh

September 25, 2018 at 11:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “If Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination falls apart in the face of sexual misconduct accusations, Mr. Trump faces the very real possibility that he could lose his chance to put even his second choice in this seat, which holds the balance between conservative and liberal wings on the nation’s most important court.”

“Democrats need to pick up only two seats in the midterm elections six weeks from Tuesday to take control of the Senate, and their anger over the Republican refusal to even consider President Barack Obama’s last nominee for the Supreme Court in 2016 is unabated. If Democrats take charge, they could block any choice Mr. Trump sends up or at least force him to pick a candidate more to their liking.”

“That scenario helps explain why Mr. Trump and Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, are so determined to push through Judge Kavanaugh rather than replace him with a less damaged candidate.”

U.S. Will Miss Trade Deadline to Include Canada

September 25, 2018 at 11:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer said negotiators facing a self-imposed Sept. 30 deadline are “sort of running out of time” to include Canada in a new North American trade deal, the Washington Post reports.

If the remaining gaps cannot be bridged in the next few days, the administration will request congressional approval of a deal with Mexico only, he said.

Republicans Face a Suburban Tsunami

September 25, 2018 at 10:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ron Brownstein: “Converging crises are compounding the risk that Republicans could suffer historic 2018 losses in suburban communities that could harden a starkly polarized alignment in American politics.”

“Precisely as sexual abuse allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh threaten to deepen the GOP’s already cavernous deficit with well-educated white women, the chaos that erupted with Monday’s uncertainty about the fate of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appears likely to compound the concerns of independent voters who want Congress to provide more of a check on President Donald Trump.”

“Even before these developments, Republicans faced a perilous environment in white-collar suburbs rooted in discontent among college-educated white voters, especially women, over Trump’s tempestuous style, belligerent language and portions of his agenda.”

Gosar Blames Obama for Rift With Siblings

September 25, 2018 at 9:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ) told KFYI-AM that former president Barack Obama was to blame for the feud with six of his siblings who made an advertisement backing his opponent in November’s election.

Said Gosar: “It always hurts, Mike. You know, blood is supposed to be thicker than water. But, you know, this actually details exactly what the left, what Barack Obama actually asked progressives to do, is to get into family and friends, in their face, and not let up.”

Cruz Heckled Out of Restaurant

September 25, 2018 at 9:24 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) “was forced to leave a Washington restaurant Monday after left-wing activists swarmed the senator, heckling him with chants and demanding to know his position on embattled Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh,” CNN reports.

Professor Who Endorsed Kavanaugh Has Second Thoughts

September 25, 2018 at 9:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Yale law professor Akhil Reed Amar writing in the Yale Daily News:

“I still stand by what I have said about Kavanaugh’s uniquely impressive judicial and scholarly record over the last dozen years.”

“But now that serious accusations have arisen about his conduct in his teenage years, I believe that these accusations deserve the best and most professional investigation possible — even if that means a brief additional delay on the ultimate vote on Judge Kavanaugh, and even if that investigatory delay imperils his confirmation.”

Kavanaugh’s TV Interview Was Extraordinary

September 25, 2018 at 8:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Even the toughest Supreme Court confirmation battles never quite came to this: a grim-faced nominee, stoic wife at his side, going on national television and describing when, approximately, he lost his virginity.”

“Judge Brett Kavanaugh’s appearance on Fox News on Monday night, submitting to a tough round of questions from the anchor Martha MacCallum about allegations of sexual misconduct, was the first time in memory that a Supreme Court nominee submitted to a televised interview before the confirmation vote.”

Jeffrey Toobin called the interview “weird.”

First Read: “But how impartial can a Supreme Court nominee be when he goes on Fox News – of all possible platforms – to defend himself?

“Indeed, you can argue that the entire process of this nomination – the protests, the accusations, the defenses and now the Fox News interview – makes it almost impossible for Kavanaugh to be viewed as an impartial player. And it’s doubly tough for someone who, despite serving on the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, worked on the Ken Starr investigation in the 1990s and in the George W. Bush White House in the early 2000s.”

White House Open to Testimony from Second Accuser

September 25, 2018 at 8:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said the White House “is open to the idea of a second accuser of Judge Brett Kavanaugh testifying at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing scheduled for Thursday,” the Washington Post reports.

“The committee currently plans to hear testimony from Christine Blasey Ford, the California professor who has accused President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee of sexually assaulting her when they were high school students.”

“It remains unclear whether Ramirez will testify and how quickly that could occur. Several Republicans on the committee have said they want to vote on Kavanaugh’s nomination shortly after the Thursday hearing.”

Kavanaugh Friend Hiding Out at Delaware Beach House

September 25, 2018 at 8:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mark Judge, the man who’s been named as the only witness to an alleged high-school sexual assault by Brett Kavanaugh, was tracked down at a Delaware beach house by the Washington Post.

His only comment to the reporter: “How did you find me?”

Bloomberg Group Seeks to Flip 15 GOP House Seats

September 25, 2018 at 8:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Everytown for Gun Safety, the group founded by former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, is rolling out a $5 million digital ad campaign targeting 15 House races, as the group continues heavy investment in the midterm elections,” Politico reports.

“The full list of targeted Republican incumbents include: Reps. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA); Mike Coffman (R-CO), Karen Handel (R-GA), Kevin Yoder (R-KS), Erik Philip Paulsen (R-MN), Mike Bishop (R-MI), Tom MacArthur (R-NJ) and Barbara Comstock (R-VA). The group is also going after seven open, Republican-controlled seats that include suburbs in metro areas from Seattle to New York City.”

Sinema Holds Small Lead In Arizona

September 25, 2018 at 6:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News/Marist poll in Arizona finds Kyrsten Sinema (D) leading Martha McSally (R) in the U.S. Senate race, 48% to 45% among likely voters.

“More voters also disapprove of President Donald Trump’s performance than approve of it. Among likely voters, 44 percent approve of the job Trump is doing, while 51 percent disapprove.”

Why Republicans Are Sticking with Kavanaugh

September 25, 2018 at 6:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“At first, the Sunday night publication of a New Yorker article detailing a new allegation of sexual misconduct against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh looked like a disaster for the White House,” Politico reports.

“But by Monday afternoon, President Trump’s aides and allies argued it was not only survivable, but that they could turn an alleged ‘smear’ into a political winner that might help rescue Kavanaugh’s nomination. The judge’s accusers had overplayed their hand, they insisted of the mounting charges, and revealed the coordinated partisan attack on an honorable man.”

“Undergirding the firm response was the White House’s belief that surrender in the face of what Republican loyalists consider a liberal assault would cost Trump dearly with conservative voters, a view drawn from internal White House polling.”

Republicans Think They Have the Votes for Kavanaugh

September 25, 2018 at 6:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “Top Republicans tell me they remain confident that Kavanaugh will get the 50 votes he needs, in a floor vote that leaders hope to hold on Friday or Saturday.”

Kavanaugh’s Yearbook Was Hurtful to Woman He Named

September 24, 2018 at 10:30 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Brett Kavanaugh and several other football players listed themselves as “Renate Alumni” in their Georgetown Prep yearbooks, the New York Times reports, apparently “boasting about their conquests.”

Renate Schroeder Dolphin was one of 64 women who signed a letter earlier this month defending Kavanaugh’s character after he was accused of sexually assault while in high school, but was stunned when she learned of the yearbook references.

Said Dolphin: “I can’t begin to comprehend what goes through… the minds of 17-year-old boys who write such things, but the insinuation is horrible, hurtful and simply untrue. I pray their daughters are never treated this way.”
