GQ: “When men broke for Trump in 2024, Democrats turned to Pat Ryan — a veteran, dad, and two-term Congressman from New York — for answers. They might not like what he has to say.”

Oil Companies Not Embracing ‘Drill, Baby, Drill’
“President Trump is swinging American energy policy sharply in favor of fossil fuels, but oil and gas companies say those changes won’t push them to engage in the frenzy of new drilling that Mr. Trump wants,” the New York Times reports.
“The oil industry is thrilled by Mr. Trump’s executive orders, which are designed to make life harder for renewable energy companies and easier for oil, gas and pipeline businesses. But on the critical question of whether his policies will lead to more oil and gas production — one of Mr. Trump’s central goals — industry executives say not unless prices rise a lot, something the president says he will not stand for.”
Trump Calls for ‘Iron Dome’ for U.S.
“President Donald Trump is preparing an executive order for a ‘next generation’ defense shield to protect the US against ballistic missiles and other long-range attack,” Bloomberg reports.
“It says Trump will order the construction of an Iron Dome shield, comparing it to Israel’s vaunted system which was developed in coordination with the US and is designed to address threats including drones, rockets and cruise missiles.”

For the first time in decades, the Republicans now lead the Democrats in Nevada voter registration, the Nevada Independent reports.
Greenland’s Independence Referendum Is Years Away
“Greenland, thrown into the geopolitical limelight amid renewed interest from Donald Trump, may still need several years to arrange a referendum on independence,” Bloomberg reports.
“Aaja Chemnitz, who chairs the Greenland committee in the Nordic country’s legislature, spoke on Monday after recent comments by the semi-autonomous island’s prime minister, Mute Egede, on loosening ties with Denmark. Egede has in the past weeks stepped up his rhetoric and indicated an independence ballot could be coming in the next four-year election period.”
Florida Legislature Defies Ron DeSantis on Immigration
“Gov. Ron DeSantis suffered a stunning defeat courtesy of his own party Monday as the Legislature refused to hold a special session dealing with immigration and ballot initiatives that he forced on their chambers, instead quickly gaveling out,” Politico reports.
“But the lawmakers didn’t head home. Instead, they pivoted to hold their own special session — where they passed other measures on illegal immigration.”
“The swirl of moves on Monday is the biggest defeat DeSantis has faced since dropping out of the Republican presidential primary a year ago.”
What It Would Take to Deport 11 Million People
Financial Times: “Given that there are approximately 11 million people in the US without permanent legal status, a genuine mass deportation would have a wrenching impact on American society, its economy and its sense of self as a nation.”
“Deportation on a Trumpian scale would also face enormous financial, legal and logistical hurdles at every step of the process: identification, apprehension, detention and expulsion. The federal government currently lacks the systems, the facilities and, in some cases, the legal authority to carry out the operations that Trump has described.”
Doug Emhoff to Return to Corporate Law
“The latest guessing game in Washington is where former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Douglas Emhoff, might go next. Half of that question has been answered,” the New York Times reports.
“Starting Monday, Mr. Emhoff will become a partner at the corporate law firm Willkie Farr & Gallagher, splitting his time between Los Angeles and New York. He will advise companies on crises including litigation and corporate investigations.”
Trump’s Retribution Is an Implied Threat to Others
“In his first week in office, President Trump made clear that his promises to exact revenge on his perceived enemies were not empty campaign pledges — and that his retribution is intended not just to impose punishment for the past but also to intimidate anyone who might cross him in the future,” the New York Times reports.
“A week into Mr. Trump’s second presidency, it is difficult to assess what practical effect the flurry of actions will have on what he sees as a hostile establishment… But taken together, the moves send a clear signal that Mr. Trump feels unconstrained about punishing the disloyal, that he is potentially willing to go further against his enemies than he had pledged on the campaign trail and that there will be a price for any opposition to come.”
Some Senators Want Open Committee Vote on Gabbard
“Some Republican senators are pushing for the unusual step of making public a key vote on Tulsi Gabbard’s nomination in the Senate Intelligence Committee, in an attempt to exert pressure on the members of a panel that typically does business behind closed doors,” Politico reports.
“The pressure campaign by senators allied with President Donald Trump, aimed at Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Tom Cotton, was described by two Senate GOP officials granted anonymity to speak about private deliberations.”
New York Times: Gabbard’s unorthodox path to Trump’s intelligence team.
Trump Seeks More Control Over California’s Water
“The White House on Sunday released an executive order by President Trump that laid out a plan to exert the federal government’s role in California’s complex water management operations and claimed its authority to overrule state officials,” the New York Times reports.
“The order, dated Friday, comes after Mr. Trump traveled to the state to see the devastation from wildfires that have been raging in Los Angeles for weeks. It put formal directives behind Mr. Trump’s steady criticism of California’s leaders and their response to the fires.”
Quote of the Day
“The level of anticipatory obedience we’re seeing from business, universities and the media is unlike anything I’ve seen in my lifetime.”
— Dartmouth professor Brendan Nyhan, quoted by the New York Times.
Trump Reminds Reporters They Get More Access from Him
President Trump scoffed at reporters getting “a bit more access” than under his predecessor, Joe Biden, and joked it was “like 5,000%” different — meaning he was willing to answer a lot more questions, the AP reports.
Implementing Project 2025
Out of the 52 presidential directives that President Trump signed last week, “28 contained language resembling text published as part of Project 2025,” the Washington Post reports.
Trump Plans to Reshape the Military
“President Donald Trump on Monday is expected to sign three executive orders that would reshape the military, including banning transgender service members from serving in the US armed forces, gutting the military’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion programs, and reinstating service members with backpay who were discharged for refusing to get vaccinated from Covid-19,” CNN reports.
Democrat Leads Early Virginia Polls
“Early surveys show former U.S. Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) leading Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R) in the race to replace Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin (R), in what is likely to be the marquee gubernatorial matchup of this year’s off-year elections,” Pluribus News reports.
Agents Told to Be ‘Camera Ready’ for Immigration Raids
“The Trump administration’s weekend immigration sweep that included nearly 1,000 arrests and has chilled many immigrant communities was followed by another blitz: A barrage of video and photos from the federal government showing agents in tactical gear and vests emblazoned with ‘Police ICE’ and ‘Homeland Security’ taking cuffed suspects away,” CNN reports.
“The made-for-TV look of the arrests is not a coincidence.”
“At least two agencies assisting US immigration officials with the raids have told personnel to ensure their clothing clearly depicts their respective agency in case they are filmed by members of the media.”
