Republicans Defy Trump on National Emergency

February 4, 2019 at 7:41 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Many Senate Republicans are deeply opposed to President Trump declaring a national emergency to build his border wall, with enough resistance that the president might ultimately be forced to veto a measure intended to block him,” Politico reports.

“Interviews with a dozen GOP senators on Monday revealed broad efforts to wave Trump off from doing an end-run around Congress, part of an effort to avoid a politically perilous floor vote that could place them at odds with the president.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi could force the vote in an effort to embarrass the president.

Manafort Will Be Sentenced Next Month

February 4, 2019 at 7:34 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Manafort “will be sentenced for the first time on March 13, a federal judge in Washington who approved his guilty plea said Monday,” CNN reports.

“The court date sets up one of the most anticipated bookends of Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.”

Prosecutors In New York Seek Inauguration Records

February 4, 2019 at 7:19 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Prosecutors in New York’s Southern District have reached out to President Trump’s inauguration committee and plan to subpoena the organization for documents, indicating that even as the special counsel probe appears to be nearing an end, another investigation that could hamstring the president and his lawyers is widening,” ABC News reports.

“The contact from the Southern District, which came from its public corruption section, is the latest activity focusing on Trump’s political fundraising both before and immediately after his 2016 election.”

New York Times: “A lawyer working with the inaugural committee received a subpoena on Monday evening seeking documents related to all of the committee’s donors and event attendees; any benefits handed out, including tickets and photo opportunities with the president; federal disclosure filings; vendors; contracts; and more.”

“Prosecutors also showed interest in whether any foreigners illegally donated to the committee, as well as whether committee staff knew that such donations were illegal, asking for documents laying out legal requirements for donations.”

Few Are Afraid of Trump

February 4, 2019 at 7:05 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As president he tried to intimidate some of the nation’s strongest allies, including Canada, Mexico, Britain, France and Germany, in his initial trade talks. He demanded political loyalty from Republicans in Congress, and drove several who bucked him from office, notably Senators Bob Corker and Jeff Flake. But as his presidency enters its third year, a less convenient truth is emerging: Few outside the Republican Party are afraid of him, and even that intimidation may be changing after the government shutdown.”

“One of the clearest signals came last week when Republicans, backing an amendment offered by Senator Mitch McConnell, Republican of Kentucky and the majority leader, opposed the president’s call for withdrawal of United States military forces from Syria and Afghanistan as part of a Middle East policy bill. Only three Republicans voted against it.”

Sanders Will Give His Own State of the Union Response

February 4, 2019 at 6:37 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) “will deliver his own response to President Trump’s State of the Union address on Tuesday for the third year running,” The Hill reports.

“His response will follow Trump’s speech and be streamed on Facebook, YouTube and Twitter…. at the same time that former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams delivers the official Democratic Party response.”

Speech Draft Doesn’t Include Emergency Declaration

February 4, 2019 at 6:07 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A source tells CNN that a draft of President Trump’s State of the Union address to be delivered tomorrow night does not include an emergency declaration to build a wall on the Southern border.

Super PAC Unleashes Wave of Oppo Against Schultz

February 4, 2019 at 5:57 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The super PAC, which was founded by David Brock, a liberal commentator and leader of Media Matters for America, gave CNBC a first look at the research. It says Starbucks paid off $46 million in settlements to employees complaining about wage and compensation issues, much of the time while Howard Schultz was often at the helm.”

“While some of these settlements noted by the super PAC did not take place when Schultz was either CEO or chairman, the group is clearly trying to convince voters that under his leadership, Starbucks took advantage of employees.”

Russian at Trump Tower Meeting Received Payments

February 4, 2019 at 5:33 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Russian-born lobbyist who attended the controversial Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 received a series of suspicious payments totaling half a million dollars before and after the encounter,” BuzzFeed News reports.

“Documents show that Rinat Akhmetshin, a Soviet military officer turned Washington lobbyist, deposited large, round-number amounts of cash in the months preceding and following the meeting, where a Russian lawyer offered senior Trump campaign officials dirt on Hillary Clinton.”

“The lobbyist also received a large payment that bank investigators deemed suspicious from Denis Katsyv, whose company Prevezon Holdings was accused by the US Justice Department of laundering the proceeds of a $230 million Russian tax fraud.”

Three Democrats Battle for South Carolina Operatives

February 4, 2019 at 5:11 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CNN: “In recent weeks, advisers for Kamala Harris, Joe Biden and Cory Booker, as well as other White House aspirants, have engaged in a fierce battle for operatives in the first-in-the-South primary state. They have courted potential hires with job offers and big titles—or in Biden’s case, a promise that the wait would be worth it—as they seek to build their broader network of influencers in the state.”

“Several sources who spoke to CNN say that top political talent in the state is being courted most heavily by three hopefuls: Booker, Harris and Biden. Biden’s political team has been making calls to South Carolina Democrats to get them on board, possibly to launch a campaign with a solid team in place.”

Steyer Turns Up Heat on Powerful House Chairman

February 4, 2019 at 4:59 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Billionaire Tom Steyer, who heads a group trying to impeach President Trump, “launched a television ad buy targeting Rep. Richard Neal (D-MA) in his own backyard as part of an effort to get the House Ways and Means chairman to subpoena the president’s tax returns,” Politico reports.

Steyer is trying to “pressure Neal into action, and plans to hire paid staff and launch a door-to-door canvassing effort in the congressman’s district.”

Schultz’s Own Polling Shows He’d Throw Race to Trump

February 4, 2019 at 4:53 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Internal polling from Howard Schultz shows him pulling about 17% of the vote in hypothetical presidential match ups between President Trump and either Kamala Harris (D) or Elizabeth Warren (D), NBC News reports.

Schulz wins about 17% in each of the two ballot tests, while Trump leads the Democrat by a margin of 33% to 32%.

Jonathan Chait: “In other words, Schultz’s own polling indicates he would lose badly, and would throw the race to Trump.”

Northam’s Approval Collapses In Virginia

February 4, 2019 at 4:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Morning Consult poll finds Virginia voters have soured on Gov. Ralph Northam.

Northam has had a 41-percentage-point drop in Northam’s net approval rating in the two days after revelations that the governor’s medical school yearbook page had a picture of one person in blackface and another dressed as a member of the Ku Klux Klan.

Nate Silver: “Democrats seem to react differently to scandals involving Democratic politicians than Republicans do to scandals involving Republicans.”

Trump to Nominate Ex-Lobbyist as Interior Secretary

February 4, 2019 at 3:36 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump announced that he will nominate David Bernhardt, a veteran lobbyist who has helped orchestrate the administration’s push to expand oil and gas drilling as the Interior Department’s number-two official, to serve as the next secretary,” the Washington Post reports.

“If confirmed, Bernhardt, a 49-year old Colorado native known for his unrelenting work habits, would be well positioned to roll back even more of the Obama-era conservation policies he has worked to unravel since joining Interior a year and-a-half ago. He has helmed the department as acting secretary since Jan. 2, when Ryan Zinke resigned amid multiple ethics probes.”

Graham Thinks Border Wall Could Cause ‘War’ In GOP

February 4, 2019 at 2:30 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) warned that there could be a “war” among Republicans if President Trump declared a national emergency to build the U.S.-Mexico border wall, The Hill reports.

Said Graham: “It seems to me that he’s gonna have to go it alone, but there could be a war within the Republican Party over the wall.”

That said, Graham added that he would “stand with” Trump if he declares a national emergency to construct the U.S.-Mexico border wall and urged his Republican colleagues to “get behind the president” if he goes down that path.

Christie May Run for President Again

February 4, 2019 at 2:01 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) said he isn’t ruling out a presidential run in 2024, adding that he would only do it if he could “see a pathway to victory,” Politico reports.

Said Christie: “Yeah, listen, why not? I’m 56 years old, so you have to see… I’m not someone who wants to do it just to go through the exercise. But if I saw a pathway to victory and a way to make a difference, I certainly would consider it.”

Jeff Bezos Wins the Trump Era

February 4, 2019 at 1:54 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Two years into Donald Trump’s presidency, the man who has profited most from the era is his foremost nemesis in the business world, Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos,” Bloomberg reports.

“Trump has repeatedly vilified Bezos, threatening his company with tax increases, antitrust prosecution and higher shipping fees, attacking the Bezos-owned Washington Post as a ‘scam’ and even mocking the billionaire for his pending divorce. No figure in corporate America is attacked more often in Trump’s Twitter posts.”

“Yet no one has made more money than Bezos since Trump’s election. The president’s social-media huffing and puffing hasn’t hurt a solidly constructed business riding the rise of electronic commerce, web advertising and cloud computing.”

Virginia Lt. Gov Denies Sexual Assault Allegation

February 4, 2019 at 12:29 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax (D) has threatened legal action against a conservative website that aired what Fairfax’s office called a “defamatory and false” sexual assault allegation against him, the Richmond Times Dispatch reports.

Fairfax would become the governor if Gov. Ralph Northam (D) is forced to resign over his racist yearbook photo.

New York Times: “As Northam met Monday morning with advisers in the state capitol complex here to discuss his future, stunned legislators arrived to word of the middle-of-the-night statement by the Fairfax aides after the publication of the story by the right-wing website, Big League Politics.”

“The allegation threw Virginia’s government into a deeper state of chaos, just two days after Mr. Northam admitted that in 1984 he had used shoe polish to darken his face for a Michael Jackson-themed dance party but denied in the same year that he had appeared in blackface or a Ku Klux Klan robe.”
