If Trump Were In Any Other Job

August 22, 2019 at 2:01 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

James Fallows: “If Donald Trump were in virtually any other position of responsibility, action would already be under way to remove him from that role. The board at a public company would have replaced him outright or arranged a discreet shift out of power. (Of course, he would never have gotten this far in a large public corporation.) The chain-of-command in the Navy or at an airline or in the hospital would at least call a time-out, and check his fitness, before putting him back on the bridge, or in the cockpit, or in the operating room. (Of course, he would never have gotten this far as a military officer, or a pilot, or a doctor.)”

“There are two exceptions. One is a purely family-run business, like the firm in which Trump spent his entire previous career. And the other is the U.S. presidency, where he will remain, despite more and more-manifest Queeg-like  unfitness, as long as the GOP Senate stands with him.”

Abraham Up with New Ad for Louisiana Governor

August 22, 2019 at 1:42 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-LA), who’s running for Louisiana governor, is out with a new ad which ends with this line: “As a doctor, I can assure you there are only two genders.”

McConnell Defends the Filibuster

August 22, 2019 at 1:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) defends the legislative filibuster in the New York Times:

“A Democratic assault on the legislative filibuster would make the nomination fights look like child’s play… The legislative filibuster is directly downstream from our founding tradition. If that tradition frustrates the whims of those on the far left, it is their half-baked proposals and not the centuries-old wisdom that need retooling.”

“My Republican colleagues and I have not and will not vandalize this core tradition for short-term gain. We recognize what everyone should recognize — there are no permanent victories in politics… If future Democrats shortsightedly decide to reduce the Senate to majority rule, we’ll have lost a key safeguard of American government. And — stop me if you’ve heard this one — they’d regret it a lot sooner than they think.”

Biden’s New Ad Emphasizes Ties to Obama

August 22, 2019 at 1:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Biden is out a new ad that emphasizes his ties to former President Barack Obama — and to mark the 11th anniversary of Obama choosing Biden as his running mate.

Epstein Was Not to Be Left Alone

August 22, 2019 at 1:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “At least eight Bureau of Prisons staffers knew that strict instructions had been given not to leave multimillionaire sex offender Jeffrey Epstein alone in his cell, yet the order was apparently ignored in the 24 hours leading up to his death, according to people familiar with the matter.”

Republicans May Be More Divided Than Democrats

August 22, 2019 at 12:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Alan Abramowitz: “When it comes to ideological identification, Democratic voters are far more divided than Republican voters. Around two-thirds of Republican voters identify as conservative while fewer than half of Democratic voters identify as liberal. Many observers of the current presidential campaign have cited this fact to argue that ideological divisions are a serious potential threat to Democratic unity, especially if the party nominates a strongly liberal candidate.”

“But a closer examination of recent polling data indicates that when it comes to specific policy issues such as abortion, gun control, and health care, Democratic voters are actually considerably less divided than Republican voters. Moreover, these data show that divisions among Democrats based on age, education, and race are much less significant when it comes to policy issues.”

“What makes this all the more important is that policy preferences appear to have a much stronger influence than ideological identification on voters’ broader political outlook including their opinions of President Trump. These findings suggest that the task of uniting Democrats behind the party’s eventual nominee may not be as difficult as some pundits and political observers have suggested.”

Big Majority Oppose Impeaching Trump

August 22, 2019 at 12:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Monmouth poll finds just 35% of Americans feel that President Trump should be impeached and compelled to leave the presidency while a clear majority — 59% — disagree with this course of action.

The survey finds Trump’s approval at a dismal 40% to 53%.

The Democratic Race Is Still Wide Open

August 22, 2019 at 11:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “It’s been a very long time since a true dark horse — a candidate who really came out of nowhere — won a presidential nomination. But we’ve had a couple of recent winners (John McCain in 2008 and John Kerry in 2004) who looked dead in the water for long periods of the year before the election. And we’ve had other candidates (Rick Santorum in 2012 and Gary Hart way back in 1984) who showed almost no signs of life until right before the Iowa caucuses but then went on to become serious challengers to the eventual winner.”

“I see a lot of pundits out there who want to reach conclusions about at least the structure of this cycle’s nomination struggle, if not proclaim a winner. I’m not averse to doing that when there’s strong evidence, as there was for Hillary Clinton in 2015. But there’s nothing close to that this time, and that means, to me, that we still don’t really have a good idea of where any of this is headed.”

Manufacturing Contracts for First Time In Decade

August 22, 2019 at 11:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“U.S. manufacturer growth slowed to the lowest level in almost 10 years in August, the latest sign that the trade war may be exacerbating the economic slowdown,” CNBC reports.

“U.S. manufacturing activity slowed to a nearly three-year low in July… But this new survey showed new orders received by manufacturers dropped the most in 10 years, while the data also showed export sales tanked to the lowest level since August 2009.”

New Poll Suggests Arizona Is In Play

August 22, 2019 at 10:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new OH Predictive Insights poll in Arizona shows Joe Biden leading President Trump in a general election match up, 45% to 43%.

Trump edges Elizabeth Warren, 44% to 43%, but well within the poll’s margin of error.

Trump leads Bernie Sanders, 44% to 34%, tops Kamala Harris 45% to 36% and leads Pete Buttigieg, 43% to 38%.

Said pollster Mike Noble: “Trump is in the low- to mid-40s, which I’d say is a pretty big red flag. He’s not doing himself any favors for 2020 in a state he won in 2016.”

Election Meltdown

August 22, 2019 at 10:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Out early next year: Election Meltdown: Dirty Tricks, Distrust, and the Threat to American Democracy by Rick Hasen.

Hasen to Politico: “I don’t think folks realize how norm-based and tenuous are our rules for peaceful transitions of power and acceptance of election results by the losers of the election. Internal and external forces, and not just Trump, have eroded trust in how we conduct our elections and count ballots, and we cannot take it as a given that losers will accept the 2020 results (whether that’s Trump who might lose narrowly in Wisconsin or Democrats who might complain about voter suppression costing them Georgia).”

This is an important book.

The Russia Wildcard

August 22, 2019 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Americans are at each other’s throats. Politically, socially and culturally, we suspect each other’s motives and plain sanity. So certain are we of the other’s intent to do the nation harm, some of us have joined political gangs and assaulted one another, resulting in at least 1 death,” Axios reports.

“Which is to say: Americans have played into Russian President Vladimir Putin’s hands — again. It is assumed he can attack next year’s elections if he so chooses, but since no outsider knows exactly how, what comes next is one of the great underlying mystery-dramas of the 2020 election campaign.”

Chafee Open to Libertarian Bid for President

August 22, 2019 at 10:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former Sen. Lincoln Chafee told the Daily Beast that he is open to running for president as a Libertarian.

Said Chafee: “I’m very motivated as an anti-war American, and also by the deficit. Those are two big issues that, if the Libertarian convention next summer thinks that someone with a long record on those issues… if I fit that, then yes, I’d be open to that.”

Trump Advisers Privately Worried About Primary Challenge

August 22, 2019 at 10:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Some Trump advisers are more concerned about a primary challenge than they publicly let on, as Mr. Trump faces more strain in the job than he has in many months. They are also aware that primary challenges can weaken incumbents in a general election. The most recent example was President George Bush, who faced a primary challenger from the right in 1992 from Patrick J. Buchanan, a former aide to Richard Nixon and a prominent conservative…”

“Some public polling has found that more than 40 percent of Republicans are open to a primary challenge to Mr. Trump.”

Just 36% Approve of Trump

August 22, 2019 at 10:01 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new AP-NORC poll finds just 36% of Americans approve of the way President Trump is handling his job as president, while 62% disapprove.

“The numbers may be ugly for a first-term president facing reelection in 14 months, but they are remarkably consistent. Trump’s approval rating has never dipped below 32% or risen above 42% in AP-NORC polls since he took office. By comparison, President Barack Obama’s approval never dropped below 40% in polling by Gallup.”

There Is No White House Anymore

August 22, 2019 at 9:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

This piece is only available to Political Wire members.

For as long as I’ve followed politics, reporters could refer to “the White House” to explain the president’s policy intentions and thinking. Journalists might be talking to senior staffers, and not the president, but they could usually safely refer to the White House’s position on whatever topic was being discussed.

Economic Anxiety Is a Sign of Trump’s Vulnerability

August 22, 2019 at 9:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Survey Monkey/New York Times poll finds Americans’ confidence in the economy is fragile, with a majority of voters expressing concern — a potential vulnerability for President Trump if the current economic slowdown worsens before next year’s election.

“Nearly three in five respondents to the survey said they were worried about the economy, regardless of whether they were personally struggling or doing well financially. That group cuts across party lines and encompasses a large group of voters who could collectively sink Mr. Trump’s re-election chances, including three in 10 Republicans and seven in 10 independents.”
