Are Democrats Overreacting to Howard Schultz?

January 29, 2019 at 9:34 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “We get the math why Democrats are worried… But are Democrats right now overreacting to someone who has almost zero name identification — unlike Ross Perot in 1992 or Trump in 2016? Someone who champions deficit reduction and entitlement reform — in this current political environment?”

“Are Democrats worried that their nominating process won’t produce a nominee that can win over both progressives and independents? Is it possible that the threat of Schultz running as an independent makes them nominate someone who’s, well, more pragmatic and able to win over independent voters?”

“Don’t get us wrong: We get the math. We get the ideological argument that Schultz should be running as a Democrat instead of as an independent… But what we don’t get is the panic attack — in January 2019 — about someone who has very little following, very little name ID, and no political experience whatsoever running as an independent.”

Christie Says Trump Ignores His Advice

January 29, 2019 at 9:29 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie told NBC News that he had some simple advice for President Trump about the ongoing Russia investigation: Keep quiet.

Trump, however, has ignored him.

Said Christie: “There’s no way you can make this investigation shorter, but there’s lots of ways you can it longer. And the way you can do that is to keep talking about it and tweeting about it, because every time you do that, prosecutors say, ‘Great, more things for us to chase down.'”

Did Donald Trump Jr. Lie to Congress?

January 29, 2019 at 8:17 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) hinted to MSNBC that Donald Trump Jr. might have perjured himself in Senate testimony.

Said Blumenthal: “I’m barred from saying whether any testimony has been conveyed to the special counsel.  But I can tell you this much, I was in the room when a great many of these witnesses appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee behind closed doors. I think many of them should be called back to testify in public and I hope that will be true of other congressional committees, as well, because behind closed doors, there were questions, serious issues concerning their truthfulness and that issue pertained particularly to Donald Trump Jr. in a number of contentions before our committee.”

He added: “I think this common thread of lying to Congress and particularly to congressional committees may ensnare a number of others potential targets in this special counsel’s investigation and become a matter of criminal action.”

Personal Information Removal Made Easy

Every day, marketers, data brokers, and even cybercriminals trade and exploit personal data—everything from your home address to your cell phone number. That’s why I use Incogni, which works quietly in the background to make my personal information hard to find online.

It removes my data from hundreds of databases used by advertisers, scammers, and identity thieves, reducing the chances of targeted phishing attacks or fraud. It also makes my details far less accessible to insurance companies, banks, and even potential employers.

The process is completely automated, and it gives me real peace of mind to know my personal information is being scrubbed from the internet. Save 55% on your annual subscription with code POLITICALWIRE. I highly recommend it.

Democratic Field Looks Strong for 2020

January 29, 2019 at 8:09 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Bernstein: “Sen. Kamala Harris did a CNN Town Hall in Iowa on Monday night. If anyone had doubts about her readiness for the campaign trail, her performance should’ve put them to rest. She knew her stuff, knew how to interact with a big crowd on television and generally seemed as presidential as anyone does in such settings, at least aside from actual presidents.”

“That said, it’s not clear that she can stand out from the crowd. She’s good at this type of campaigning. But I expect Senators Cory Booker, Sherrod Brown, Kirsten Gillibrand, Amy Klobuchar, Elizabeth Warren and a few others will be solid as well. As a group, they’re well-informed on policy (or at least know enough to fake it). They have real proposals that they can talk about in shorter or longer bursts. They know how to deliver an attack line against the president (to which the audience of Iowa Democrats was extremely receptive). They’re going to seem professional and serious.”

Trump Wants Schultz to Run

January 29, 2019 at 7:55 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump attacked Howard Schultz on Twitter yesterday saying he didn’t have the guts to run, which many believe was the president’s way of actually luring him into the race.

Maggie Haberman confirmed these suspicions: “Trump told the crowd at the Trump Hotel tonight fundraiser that he was trying to get Howard Schultz into the race with his tweet earlier today because he thinks he’ll help him, per attendee.”

Adviser Says Schultz Could Save Democrats from Far-Left

January 29, 2019 at 7:25 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Howard Schultz adviser Steve Schmidt told Politico that the former Starbucks CEO would save the Democratic Party from nominating “someone who is so far to the left that it guarantees Trump a reelection.”

Said Schmidt: “They have done polling to gauge a potential path for Schultz, and they argue that if Schultz runs, he will open up presidential politics to not only independent voters, but to a swath of non-battleground states that campaigns typically ignore.”

Dave Weigel has another view: “One fallacy you’ll never see me fall for is that an election between Trump and ‘someone on the left like Warren’ would leave a huge path in the middle. If you’re saying that, find me the polls and point to the unpopular idea the left is running on. There isn’t one.”

Liz Cheney Rises Amid GOP Rubble

January 29, 2019 at 7:07 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Just months into her first term in office, Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WI) went nose-to-nose with then-Speaker Paul Ryan at a private meeting with GOP lawmakers… The confrontation offered an early preview of the aggressive style that helped propel Cheney to the No. 3 GOP slot in the House earlier this month,” Politico reports.

“The 52-year-old second-term lawmaker has emerged as one of the top faces of the House GOP, with Republicans relishing her eagerness attack against House Democrats. After November’s 40-seat wipeout, Cheney’s rise is seen as one of the few bright spots for the party. And her rapid ascent has fueled speculation that she could soon land in the Senate or become the first female Republican House speaker.”

Burton Defends Working for Schultz

January 29, 2019 at 6:42 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Bill Burton, a former adviser to President Barack Obama, defended his decision to join Howard Schultz’s team as the former Starbucks CEO considers an independent presidential bid in 2020, pushing back against suggestions that Schultz could be a spoiler,” CNN reports.

Burton warned against a third-party candidate in a Sacramento Bee op-ed in August 2016, saying it could help elect Donald Trump.

Most Say They Would Not Vote for Trump

January 29, 2019 at 6:38 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Washington Post-ABC News poll finds 56% of all Americans say they would “definitely not vote for him” should President Trump become the Republican nominee, while 14% say they would consider voting for him and 28% would definitely vote for him.

Majorities of independents (59%), women (64%) and suburbanites (56%) rule out supporting Trump for a second term.

Also interesting: While 75% of Republicans and GOP-leaning independents approve of Trump’s performance in office when asked separately, nearly 1 in 3 say they would like to nominate someone other than Trump to be the party’s candidate for president.

GOP May Block Trump from Another Shutdown

January 29, 2019 at 6:27 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Republicans can’t stomach another government shutdown. After weathering 35 days of a partial shuttered government, the Senate GOP is dreading the possibility another one will hit in fewer than three weeks — a sentiment that could prevent President Donald Trump from closing the government again,” Politico reports.

“Though House Republicans aren’t ruling out supporting the president should he choose another confrontation over his border wall, the Republican Senate majority — which actually has governing power — has another view.”

Starbucks Has a 2020 Problem

January 29, 2019 at 6:19 am EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Starbucks chairman emeritus Howard Schultz is a long shot to win the White House, but a sure bet to create headaches for the coffee chain he turned into a global empire,” Axios reports.

“Schultz and Starbucks are tied at the hip, which means they’ll need to work together. Kind of like Mitt Romney and Bain Capital in 2012. For Schultz, that means quickly identifying supporters in upper Starbucks management (including in the communications and legal departments), and leveraging those people when the campaign needs time-sensitive answers.”

Trump Adviser Named to Oligarch’s Board

January 28, 2019 at 11:48 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A member of President Trump’s transition team was named as a board member of a company owned by Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska the day after the Trump administration lifted sanctions against Deripaska’s companies,” the HuffPost reports.

Additional Mueller Indictments Seem Likely

January 28, 2019 at 11:22 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A defense attorney for Andrew Miller, who’s fighting a subpoena from Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election, learned Monday afternoon that the special counsel still wants witness testimony for a federal grand jury,” CNN reports.

“Paul Kamenar, the defense attorney, says the assertion from Mueller’s team made clear to him that Mueller and the Justice Department are considering an additional indictment of Roger Stone or have plans to charge others.”

Biden Decision Coming Soon

January 28, 2019 at 11:15 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Joe Biden brought his not-yet-a-campaign campaign to Florida’s biggest liberal bastion on Tuesday and said he’s “a lot closer” to deciding to run for president in 2020 and plans to make “the decision soon,” Politico reports.

January 28, 2019 at 8:50 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New Jersey state Sen. Dawn Addiego is leaving the Republican Party to become a Democrat, the New Jersey Globe reports.

The move gives Democrats a 26 to 14 majority in the state senate, giving the GOP the smallest amount of seats in the chamber since 1981.

Campaign Manager Pushing Trump to Hold Firm on Wall

January 28, 2019 at 7:40 pm EST By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s campaign manager “is pushing him to hold firm in his ongoing battle with Democrats over funding for a border wall with Mexico,” CNN reports.

“Brad Parscale is making his pitch as Trump continues to negotiate with Democrats over border wall funding with the possibility of another government shutdown looming in less than three weeks.”

“As part of his pitch, Parscale is presenting the President with internal data that shows voters in key swing areas believe a border wall or fence is needed.”
