McConnell Says Booker May Face Ethics Investigation

September 7, 2018 at 11:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said in an interview that Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) could face scrutiny from the Senate Ethics Committee for violating a rule that prohibits the release of confidential material, the Washington Post reports.

“During Thursday’s hearing on the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court, Booker said he was knowingly violating a Senate rule by releasing an email revealing the nominee’s views on racial profiling.”

“It turns out that document had already been cleared for public release. But later Thursday afternoon, Booker released what he said were 28 documents marked ‘committee confidential’ in a defiant bid to make the confirmation process more transparent.”

Next Wave of Political Books Are on the Russia Probe

September 7, 2018 at 11:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Vanity Fair: “Already this past November, Doubleday announced that CNN legal analyst and New Yorker staff writer Jeffrey Toobin had inked a deal for a book about Robert Mueller’s special-counsel probe into alleged Russian collusion and obstruction of justice among members of Trump’s inner circle. More recently, I’ve learned that New York Times reporter Michael Schmidt has a Mueller-oriented project in the works as well. Schmidt has blown the lid off some of the most consequential stories about the Russia investigation.”

“In a similar vein, Times columnist and best-selling author James Stewart is writing a book about the relationship between the White House, the F.B.I. and the Justice Department.”

‘We Are a Superpower Run by a Simpleton’

September 7, 2018 at 10:57 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Gerson: “Here is the increasingly evident reality of the Trump era: We are a superpower run by a simpleton. From a foreign policy perspective, this is far worse than being run by a skilled liar. It is an invitation to manipulation and contempt.”

“What we are finding from books, from insider leaks and from investigative journalism is that the rational actors who are closest to the president are frightened by his chaotic leadership style. They describe a total lack of intellectual curiosity, mental discipline and impulse control.”

“Trump pursues no deep or subtle strategies. He does not even consistently seek his own interests. He responds like a child or a narcissist — but I repeat myself — to positive or negative stimulation. It is the reason that Trump’s lawyers, in the end, can’t allow him to be interviewed by Robert Mueller. It would be like a 9-year-old defending a PhD dissertation. Or maybe a rabbit jumping into a buzz saw.”

Trump Doesn’t Talk That Way, Except When He Does

September 7, 2018 at 10:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “As President Trump tries to refute the portrayal in the latest attention-grabbing book, he has not only denied saying the things attributed to him, he has denied that he has ever said anything like them. The problem for Mr. Trump is that, in some cases at least, the record shows that he has.”

“In particular, Mr. Trump has denied that he called Attorney General Jeff Sessions ‘mentally retarded’ or a ‘dumb Southerner,’ as the book reports. ‘I said neither, never used those terms on anyone, including Jeff, and being a southerner is a great thing,” the president wrote earlier this week.”

“But, in fact, Mr. Trump has used the phrase ‘mentally retarded’ on recorded radio shows that have been unearthed this week. And in a previously unreported incident, a journalist who used to interact with Mr. Trump during his days as a real estate developer in New York said this week that he even used the phrase ‘dumb southerner’ to describe his own in-laws.”

Democrats Vow They’ll Get Trump’s Tax Returns

September 7, 2018 at 9:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Democrats are vowing to get their hands on President Trump’s tax returns if they are able to win back the House majority in November,” The Hill reports.

Said Rep. Bill Pascrell (D-NJ): “I’m definitely going to bring it up if we don’t have them by then — that’s a definite.”

“The Democrats contend existing law empowers the tax-writing committees to access a president’s tax history. If the House flips, they say they’ll use their gavels to move swiftly to do just that.”

Rep. Mike Quigley (D-IL) told the Chicago Sun Times that he is considering a run for mayor of Chicago after Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced he would not run for re-election.

Said Quigley: “Who wouldn’t be interested in being mayor of Chicago?”

Trump Accuses Woodward of Making Up Quotes

September 7, 2018 at 8:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump took fresh aim at Bob Woodward’s forthcoming book on his presidency, calling it “a scam” and disputing quotes attributed to him, the Washington Post reports.

Said Trump: “I don’t talk the way I am quoted. If I did I would not have been elected President. These quotes were made up.”

He added: “The author uses every trick in the book to demean and belittle. I wish the people could see the real facts – and our country is doing great!”

Trump Calls Gianforte a ‘Fighter’

September 7, 2018 at 7:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump appeared to make light of Rep. Greg Gianforte’s (R-MT) assault on a reporter last year at a rally in Montana, Politico reports.

Said Trump:  “I’ll tell you what: This man has fought — in more ways than one — for your state. He has fought for your state. Greg Gianforte. He is a fighter and a winner.”

Papadopoulos Will Be Sentenced Today

September 7, 2018 at 7:42 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“George Papadopoulos, the novice, unpaid foreign policy adviser to Donald Trump who rose to prominence when he became the first former campaign adviser arrested as part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russian-influence probe, is scheduled to be sentenced Friday in Washington,” ABC News reports.

“Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October to making false statements to FBI agents about his correspondence with Russian nationals and attempts to arrange a meeting between the campaign and Russian officials. He faces up to six months in prison.”

Trump ‘Most Likely’ Won’t Force Shutdown

September 7, 2018 at 7:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that he “most likely” will not shut down the government before this November’s midterm elections over funding for his promised border wall, backing down somewhat from comments he made earlier this week hinting that he might take such a step, Politico reports.

Said Trump: “If it was up to me, I’d shut down government over border security. And I guess when you get right down to it, it is up to me but I don’t want to do anything to hurt us or potentially hurt us.”

O’Rourke Could Have Down-Ballot Implications

September 7, 2018 at 7:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

David Wasserman: “There’s scant evidence that Beto O’Rourke’s 254-county tour has moved the needle much in rural Texas, where Democrats hope would-be Cruz voters will simply stay home. But it’s a different story in Texas’s upscale suburbs: private polling on both sides now shows O’Rourke substantially outperforming Hillary Clinton’s percentages in multiple highly college-educated districts near Houston and Dallas.”

“That’s serious cause for concern for Houston GOP Rep. John Culberson (TX-07) and Dallas GOP Rep. Pete Sessions (TX-32), who sit in seats Clinton carried and are already in the Toss Up column. But it also should be a wake up call for several other Republicans who haven’t had a competitive race before but sit in upscale suburban seats President Trump carried with less than 52 percent of the vote.”

Impeachment Talk Shadows the Midterm Elections

September 7, 2018 at 7:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “As the president said last night in Montana, Democrats are already talking about impeachment. And in our private conversations every single day in the Capitol, Democrats tell us two things: They know they can’t publicly say they’ll impeach Trump, but most acknowledge that the temptation will be completely overpowering if they take control of the House. The stakes couldn’t be higher for either party.”

‘It Will Make Him Crazy’

September 7, 2018 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Many Republicans on Capitol Hill and in the White House privately agree with the Trump administration official who went rogue in The New York Times. They also say the anonymous anti-Trump screed was a tremendous setback when it comes to curbing the president’s worst impulses. Republicans have been laboring to fund the government, push for free trade and reassure allies in the face of President Donald Trump’s penchant for conflict over the border wall, trade deficits and foreign policy.”

“But people working on those matters said Thursday that the Times piece only amps up the president’s paranoia by handing him proof that members of his own team are working against him.”

Said Sen. John Thune (R-SD): “It kind of reinforces his message out there that there’s a bunch of folks here embedded in the Washington bureaucracy that are out to get him. I’m not sure it accomplishes what the folks behind it think it does.”

White House Has 12 Suspects for Op-Ed Author

September 6, 2018 at 10:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The unnamed author of the essay published by The New York Times was the target of a mole hunt by an infuriated president and the subject of an obsessive public guessing game that played out on television, online and in social media. While Mr. Trump and his staff lashed out at the news media, some privately wondered whether it would lead to a shake-up.”

“Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky, an ally of Mr. Trump’s, recommended that the president force members of his administration to take polygraph examinations, and there was at least briefly some discussion of that among advisers to the president. Another option mentioned by people close to Mr. Trump was asking senior officials to sign sworn affidavits that could be used in court if necessary. One outside adviser said the White House had a list of about 12 suspects.”
