Trump Campaign Doubles Spending Ahead of Midterms

October 15, 2018 at 8:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump’s campaign more than doubled its spending over the past three months as the president worked to rev up the Republican base ahead of next month’s midterm elections through a series of rallies and online appeals,” the New York Times reports.

“The increased spending — much of which was done through an opaque new corporate entity set up by the campaign — was reflected in filings that the campaign’s committees were set to submit on Monday evening to the Federal Election Commission.”

Important takeaway: “The largest recipient of Trump campaign funds was a company called American Made Media Consultants, which was created by the campaign to purchase digital, radio and television advertising, including online fund-raising solicitations… The model, which is patterned off one pioneered by Mitt Romney’s 2012 presidential campaign, could also allow the campaign to avoid disclosing to the election commission precise details about its spending, instead just listing line-item expenditures.”

Idaho Official Resigns Over Photos of Killed Baboons

October 15, 2018 at 8:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Idaho Fish and Game Commissioner Blake Fischer resigned Monday, three days after the Statesman first reported on criticism Fischer faced for sharing photos of an African hunting trip,” the Idaho Statesman reports.

“He was asked to resign by Gov. Butch Otter.”

“Fischer has received criticism from around the world after Friday’s report on the hunting trip he took to Africa and the photos he shared with friends and colleagues. Particularly, the image of his posing with a ‘family of baboons’ he shot during his trip to Namibia provoked criticism from former Idaho wildlife commissioners and has circulated on national media outlets.”

Stormy Daniels’s Lawsuit Thrown Out

October 15, 2018 at 7:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A federal judge on Monday dismissed a lawsuit from adult film actress Stormy Daniels in which she claimed that President Trump defamed her when he suggested her allegation that she was threatened to stay quiet about their relationship was a lie,” the Washington Post reports.

“Federal District Judge S. James Otero had suggested during a late September hearing that he was skeptical of Daniels’s claim on First Amendment grounds. The ruling ordered Daniels, whose given name is Stephanie Clifford, to pay Trump’s legal fees.”

Facebook Will Ban False Information on Voting

October 15, 2018 at 6:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Facebook Inc will ban false information about voting requirements and fact-check fake reports of violence or long lines at polling stations ahead of next month’s U.S. midterm elections, company executives told Reuters, the latest effort to reduce voter manipulation on its service.”

“The world’s largest online social network, with 1.5 billion daily users, has stopped short of banning all false or misleading posts, something that Facebook has shied away from as it would likely increase its expenses and leave it open to charges of censorship.”

Trump Says Sears Was ‘Improperly Run’ for Years

October 15, 2018 at 5:11 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump said that Sears had been mismanaged for years before it declared bankruptcy, Bloomberg reports.

Said Trump: “Sears has been dying for many years. It’s been obviously improperly run for many years and it’s a shame.”

Among those responsible for its management: Treasury secretary Steven Mnuchin, who was a member of Sears’s board from 2005 until December 2016.

Quote of the Day

October 15, 2018 at 4:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I took this test and released the results for anyone who cares to see because I’ve got nothing to hide. What are YOU hiding, Donald Trump? Release your tax returns – or the Democratic-led House will do it for you soon enough. Tick-tock, Mr President.”

— Sen. Elizabeth Warren, on Twitter, on taking a DNA test to prove her Native American heritage.

Saudis May Admit Khashoggi Died During Interrogration

October 15, 2018 at 4:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Saudis are preparing a report that will acknowledge that Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi’s death was the result of an interrogation that went wrong, one that was intended to lead to his abduction from Turkey,” CNN reports.

“One source says the report will likely conclude that the operation was carried out without clearance and transparency and that those involved will be held responsible.”

Budget Deficit Jumps Nearly 17% in 2018

October 15, 2018 at 4:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The federal budget deficit swelled to $779 billion in fiscal year 2018, the Treasury Department said on Monday, driven in large part by a sharp decline in corporate tax revenues after the Trump tax cuts took effect,” the New York Times reports.

“The deficit rose nearly 17 percent year over year, from $666 billion in 2017. It is now on pace to top $1 trillion a year before the next presidential election.”

McCaskill Trounces Hawley In Fundraising

October 15, 2018 at 4:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) “has outraised her Republican challenger by a more than 2 to 1 margin since July, but she’s also been spending money at a faster rate than she’s collecting it,” McClatchy reports.

“The Missouri Democrat, who has faced frequent attacks from President Trump, raised nearly $8.5 million from July 1 through Sept. 30, a record for the quarter in Missouri… Her three-month total is almost as much as her GOP opponent Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley has raised since launching his candidacy last year.”

Lower Turnout Scenario

October 15, 2018 at 3:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

CBS Battleground Tracker: “In the lower turnout scenario, new midterm voters stay home and the electorate profiles like it has in recent midterms. The Republicans win 218 seats under these conditions, narrowly retaining their majority, but without any seats to spare.”

October 15, 2018 at 3:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Joe Biden is heading to Nevada this weekend, appearing at the influential Culinary Workers Union as he mulls a 2020 presidential run,” Politico reports.

“The visit follows an appearance by Biden this past weekend in South Carolina, another critical early primary state. Biden, a frontrunner in early presidential polls, has been ramping up his midterm campaign appearances in recent weeks.”

Mar-a-Lago Member Gives to Legal Defense Fund

October 15, 2018 at 2:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Anthony Lomangino, a recycling mogul, Trump campaign donor and Mar-a-Lago member, gave $150,000 to a legal defense fund set up for current and former Trump aides mired in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe, according to a new filing with the IRS, Politico reports.

Heller Grabs Lead In Nevada

October 15, 2018 at 2:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Emerson College poll in Nevada finds that Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV) holds a 7-point lead against challenger Jacky Rosen (D) in the U.S. Senate race, 48% to 41% among likely voters.

For comparison, the RealClearPolitics polling average shows Heller ahead by 1.7%.

Cruz Relying on Insiders to Win Re-Election

October 15, 2018 at 2:16 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) “rode an anti-Washington wave into the Senate in 2012, became a disruptive outsider in the chamber the next year, and ran against the establishment when he sought the presidency in 2016,” Politico reports.

“But when his reelection campaign wobbled earlier this year under pressure from upstart Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke, Cruz leaned hard on a new strategy: the inside track.”

“Cruz’s TV ads have touted his record bringing home billions in federal relief spending after Hurricane Harvey, highlighting ‘bipartisan’ tax relief for those affected by the storm. Cruz’s Texas colleague, Sen. John Cornyn — whom Cruz declined to endorse in 2014 when Cornyn, the No. 2 Republican in the Senate, faced a primary challenge — headlined a six-figure fundraiser for Cruz in Washington. And Cruz has leaned on help from the highest echelons of the Republican Party, campaigning with Vice President Mike Pence and Donald Trump Jr. in Texas recently and getting a commitment from President Donald Trump for a future event.”

What to Expect from Senator Romney

October 15, 2018 at 12:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Amber Phillips: “During the 2016 presidential campaign, Mitt Romney was one of the leading voices encouraging his party to pick someone — anyone — but President Trump. Romney was very clear, and very public, about how he felt about Trump.”

“So it’s disingenuous for Romney to try to claim, as he did Friday, that he wasn’t a leader of the ‘Never Trump’ movement.”

“But the fact that Romney is trying to distance himself from himself underscores how even one of the president’s former top critics has come to accept that the Republican Party is Trump’s party. And that means as Romney cruises to become the possible next senator from Utah, we shouldn’t expect him to become Trump’s next Republican antagonist in Congress.”

Little Partisan Agreement on the Big Issues

October 15, 2018 at 12:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Pew Research: “Majorities of registered voters who support Democratic candidates for Congress rate 13 of 18 issues as ‘very big’ problems facing the country. Among voters who favor the Republican candidates in their districts, majorities rate only five issues as very big problems.”

“More striking, several of the issues that rank among the most serious problems among Democratic voters – including how minorities are treated by the criminal justice system, climate change, the rich-poor gap, gun violence and racism – are viewed as very big problems by fewer than a third of Republican voters.”

Trump Denies He Bet Warren $1 Million for DNA Test

October 15, 2018 at 11:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump denied that he offered Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) $1 million to take a test proving her Native American heritage, even though he did just that, The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “I didn’t say that. You’d better read it again.”

He must have forgotten the challenge is actually on video:
