Democrats Regain Midterm Momentum In Final Days

October 30, 2018 at 7:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Republican Party base has been electrified by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings and a campaign blitz from President Donald Trump. But the burst of enthusiasm has not reversed the trajectory of the midterms for the House GOP, which remains on the verge of losing its majority next week,” Politico reports.

“Some Republicans deep in Trump country have regained ground. But the handful of bright spots have been outweighed by a tidal wave of Democratic spending and voter support in the closing weeks of the midterm election, according to public and private polling, interviews with strategists from both parties and a Politico analysis of TV spending figures. In recent days, House Republicans have rushed to fortify a surprise collection of GOP-held districts in a half-dozen states that were never expected to be competitive.”

Trump to Terminate Birthright Citizenship

October 30, 2018 at 6:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump told Axios that he  plans to sign an executive order that would remove the right to citizenship for babies of non-citizens and unauthorized immigrants born on U.S. soil.

“This would be the most dramatic move yet in Trump’s hardline immigration campaign, this time targeting ‘anchor babies’ and ‘chain migration.’ And it will set off another stand-off with the courts, as Trump’s power to do this through executive action is debatable to say the least.”

Said Trump: “It’s in the process. It’ll happen… with an executive order.”

He added that he was surprised anyone else knew about his secret plan: “I didn’t think anybody knew that but me. I thought I was the only one.”

Lamont Has Small Lead for Connecticut Governor

October 30, 2018 at 6:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Quinnipiac poll in Connecticut finds Ned Lamont (D) just ahead of Bob Stefanowski (R) in the race for governor, 47% to 43% among likely voters, with independent candidate Oz Griebel at 7%.

Said pollster Douglas Schwartz: “This race is looking a lot like the last two elections for governor in Connecticut — a real nail-biter.”

Trump May Answer Mueller Questions Post-Election

October 29, 2018 at 11:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s legal team “has prepared written responses to several dozen questions from Special Counsel Robert Mueller but say they won’t submit them until after next week’s elections and only if they reach a broader agreement with Mueller on terms for the questioning,” Bloomberg reports.

“Rudy Giuliani, Trump’s personal attorney, said in an interview Monday that the answers relate only to whether Trump colluded with Russia during his presidential campaign. He said the legal team is still unwilling to answer any questions concerning obstruction of justice by the president.”

“Giuliani also said that a face-to-face interview with Mueller is ‘off the table’ for now but isn’t being ruled out completely.”

Quote of the Day

October 29, 2018 at 11:08 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“There is no invasion. No one’s coming to get you. There’s nothing at all to worry about.”

— Fox News anchor Shepard Smith, dismissing President Trump’s claim of an invading caravan moving towards the Mexican border.

Many In Pittsburgh Want Trump to Stay Away

October 29, 2018 at 8:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Still reeling from the horror and grief after Saturday’s massacre at the Tree of Life synagogue, Pittsburgh is now dealing with something else: the barbed politics of the 2018 midterms and widespread opposition to President Trump’s plan to visit here Tuesday,” the New York Times reports.

“Jewish leaders said that President Trump, who announced he would visit here on Tuesday, was not welcome in Pittsburgh and accused him of stirring up extremism.”

“Mayor William Peduto, who strongly rejected Mr. Trump’s suggestion that armed guards in houses of worship are the answer to violence, warned that the president would be a distraction from funerals taking place.”

Trump Goes All In on Florida

October 29, 2018 at 8:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“More than any other state, President Trump has staked his reputation and his political clout on Florida, a state with one of his most prominent political acolytes running for governor, the place where he spends perhaps more time than anywhere else outside of the White House, and a state he’ll return to twice this week in an effort to stave off an embarrassing loss,” the Washington Post reports.

“But beset by natural disasters, alleged bombmakers, and a race-inflected campaign, Florida is at risk of becoming a problem for Republicans that could have implications that reach far beyond the election taking place in seven days.”

White House Struggles to Balance Attacks and Empathy

October 29, 2018 at 8:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Ahead of his Tuesday visit to Pittsburgh, President Trump and his top aides have struggled to balance their scorched-earth campaign strategy with calls for national unity following last weekend’s slaughter of 11 Jewish worshipers in a synagogue there,” the Washington Post reports.

“The president’s plans to ratchet up his political attacks in the final seven-day sprint to the midterm elections have been complicated by a wave of separate and tragic crises.”

McAdams Widens Lead Over Love In Utah

October 29, 2018 at 8:43 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new KUTV poll in Utah’s 4th Congressional District reports a 6 point lead for Ben McAdams (D) over incumbent Rep. Mia Love (R), 49% to 43%.

GOP Scrambles to Save Suddenly Vulnerable Districts

October 29, 2018 at 8:39 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Republicans are scrambling to save suddenly vulnerable candidates in congressional districts that President Trump won in 2016, as Democrats have charged deeper into conservative strongholds in their bid to win the House,” the Washington Post reports.

”On Tuesday, the National Republican Congressional Committee plans to launch an ad campaign in a South Carolina district that Trump carried by 13 percentage points, while House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) intends to campaign for a Kentucky incumbent in a district that went to Trump by 15 points.”

“The last-minute moves follow decisions by Republican groups to toss political lifelines to House candidates in Georgia, Florida, Virginia and Washington state, all in districts where Trump was victorious.”

How Migrant Caravan Conspiracies Intersect With Hatred

October 29, 2018 at 6:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “With the kind of dark language usually reserved for true catastrophes like the Sept. 11 attacks, conservative commentators and politicians have led a concerted push to elevate the caravan as an issue. They have called it ‘an invasion.’ ‘a national emergency,’ ‘an illegal alien mob,’ ‘an attack on America,’ and a crisis with implications that are ‘critical to the future of our civilization.'”

“These outcries, which have included unfounded claims about the caravan’s origins and wildly fluctuating estimates of its size, are playing out in a clear pattern. They often start with right-wing commentators, conspiracy theorists and activist groups with large followings; their talk then breaks through more broadly on Fox News, Breitbart News and other outlets that are popular with conservative voters; and ultimately Mr. Trump tweets or remarks about them, acting as an amplifier and a validator.”

Trump Will Send 5,200 Troops to Mexican Border

October 29, 2018 at 5:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

U.S. officials said that some 5,200 additional U.S. troops will deploy to the border with Mexico by the end of the week, as President Trump likened a caravan of Central American migrants who are heading north to “an invasion,” the Washington Post reports.

“The deployments will include three combat engineer battalions, members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and troops who specialize in aviation, medical treatment and logistics.”

New York Times: “The deployment is the first piece of a multistage approach that Mr. Trump has been considering for several weeks, and which also is expected to include executive action to bar entry to Central Americans, including for those seeking asylum.”

Trump Offers His Closing Message for Midterms

October 29, 2018 at 3:55 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump’s campaign announced that it would spend $6 million to air a new television ad in the run-up to next week’s midterm congressional elections, “making the closing sale to vote” Republican.

New York Times: “But Mr. Trump is not the one making this particular sale. Neither he, his likeness nor his voice appears in the spot.”

“That’s because Mr. Trump is unpopular with the group of voters his campaign is apparently trying to target at this critical stage in the race: white, college-educated women, who recent polls have shown disproportionately view him negatively, and are also disinclined to vote for Republicans.”

Obama to Campaign for Abrams In Georgia

October 29, 2018 at 3:35 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Former President Obama is heading to Georgia on Friday to campaign for gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams and other Democrats mere days before the midterm elections,” The Hill reports.

“Georgia Democrats announced Monday that Obama will host a Get Out the Vote rally in Atlanta on Nov. 2 at the Forbes Arena at Morehouse College.”

Trump Was Target of Czech Spying

October 29, 2018 at 3:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Guardian: “The communist intelligence service in Prague stepped up its spying campaign against Donald Trump in the late 1980s, targeting him to gain information about the ‘upper echelons of the US government,’ archive files and testimony from former cold war spies reveal.”

Democrats Open Up Wide Lead on Generic Ballot

October 29, 2018 at 2:48 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new USC Dornsife/Los Angeles Times poll finds Democrats leading Republicans in the generic congressional ballot by a stunning 17-points, 57% to 40% among likely voters.

“That’s a notable increase in Democratic support from the previous week, when the poll found Democrats with a 13-point advantage. The increase, which stemmed from small shifts among several groups of voters, may partly reflect timing. The final two days of the poll coincided with the arrest on Friday of a Florida man on charges of sending explosive devices to prominent Democrats and critics of President Trump, and the killing on Saturday of 11 people at a synagogue in Pittsburgh.”

Trump Will Visit Pittsburgh

October 29, 2018 at 2:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The White House announced that President Trump and first lady Melania Trump will “travel to Pennsylvania to express the support of the American people and grieve with the Pittsburgh community” after last week’s mass shooting at Tree of Life in Pittsburgh, the Washington Post reports.

October 29, 2018 at 2:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Gallup poll finds falling four points to 40% the week before the midterm elections.

His average approval had ticked up to the range where Republicans thought it would give them a fighting chance to hold the House, but now it’s dropped.
