‘Insight Into the Insane World of Modern Politics’

July 12, 2018 at 9:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

What a nice email to start the day:

I just wanted to send you a quick note letting you know how much I appreciate your site.

I first discovered Political Wire as a 13-year-old in the early years of the George W. Bush administration.  It’s not an exaggeration to say I have checked this site nearly every day since then.  What initially began as something of a childish curiosity about who would run for president in the next election has transformed into a much deeper fascination with campaigns and a lifelong addiction to observing the twists and turns of the political news cycle.  Whether I have 5 minutes to quickly skim the headlines of the day, or hours to delve into some of the excellent political news and commentary you include, I make my way to your site any time I want to know what is going on in the world of politics.

Since changing over to the subscription model, I am really impressed with the consistently thoughtful commentary and other special nuggets you provide to subscribers.  At $5 a month it’s a great deal to anyone who values concise, high-quality, non-sensationalist insight into the rather insane world of modern politics.

Good luck with everything and please keep doing what you do!

Political Wire only exists because of the support of readers.  If you’re not yet a member, join today for just $5 a month or $50 a year — and you’ll also get exclusive analysis, new features and no advertising.

July 12, 2018 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

French President Emmanuel Macron has denied President Trump’s claim that NATO allies have agreed to boost defense spending beyond 2 percent of gross domestic product, the AP reports.

Said Macron: “There is a communique that was published yesterday. It’s very detailed. It confirms the goal of 2 percent by 2024. That’s all.”

Macron also denied reports that Trump threatened to withdraw the United States from the NATO military alliance in a dispute over funding.

July 12, 2018 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Gallup poll finds that 64% of Americans believe the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision on abortion should stand, while 28% would like to see it overturned.

McCarthy Launches Stealth Campaign for Speaker

July 12, 2018 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) “is quietly lining up votes to succeed Paul Ryan as speaker, reaching out to key lawmakers across the Republican Conference and asking whether they will commit to back him as speaker next January,” Politico reports.

“In public, McCarthy says he’s not campaigning for the job, saying it’s more important to focus on saving the Republican majority in the House than a campaign for the top leadership post. Yet running for speaker is precisely what McCarthy is doing.”

Stormy Daniels Arrested at Strip Club

July 12, 2018 at 8:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Stormy Daniels “was arrested early Thursday at an Ohio strip club for allegedly touching patrons on stage in violation of state law,” CNN reports.

“When officers witnessed those activities, three detectives approached the stage. Daniels allegedly made her way toward two detectives, leaned over and grabbed their faces. She shoved each of their faces between her breasts.”

Said attorney Michael Avenatti: “This was a setup and politically motivated. It reeks of desperation. We will fight all bogus charges.”

Manafort Tells People He’s a ‘VIP’ In Prison

July 12, 2018 at 7:56 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

According to telephone calls being monitored by special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, Paul Manafort has recently told people he’s being treated like a ‘VIP’ at the Virginia prison where he’s been held since June 15, Politico reports.

“The longtime GOP operative’s living arrangements, described in an eight-page motion filed Wednesday by Mueller’s prosecutors, also include ‘unique privileges’ like a private, self-contained cell that’s bigger than what other inmates get, a private bathroom and shower, a personal telephone and daily access between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 10 p.m. to a workspace where Manafort can meet with his lawyers and prepare for his upcoming criminal trials. Manafort also doesn’t have to wear a prison uniform.”

North Koreans Are No Show at Scheduled U.S. Talks

July 12, 2018 at 7:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“North Korean officials didn’t show up for a planned meeting with U.S. counterparts to discuss returning the remains of American war dead… in the latest sign of tensions between the two sides,” Bloomberg reports.

“U.S. negotiators arrived Thursday at the militarized border between the two Koreas as previously announced by U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and were kept waiting,”

Trump Wants New Paint Job for Air Force One

July 12, 2018 at 7:40 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump wants to update the paint job on the next version of Air Force One, ditching the iconic robin’s-egg blue (which he calls a ‘Jackie Kennedy color’) for a bolder, ‘more American’ look,” Axios reports.

Trump Declares Victory at NATO Summit

July 12, 2018 at 7:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “strongly recommitted American support for NATO,” saying that he “had won great concessions from allies on military spending, though he did not offer any details,” the New York Times reports.

Said Trump: “The United States was not being treated fairly, but now we are. I told people that I’d be very unhappy if they did not up their commitments very substantially.”

“But if his public remarks were friendly, the tone behind closed doors was much harsher.”

Trump Again Says He’s a ‘Very Stable Genius’

July 12, 2018 at 7:34 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump again called himself a “very stable genius” after a Croatian reporter asked at the NATO summit if he’d change his tone on Twitter regarding the alliance once he’d left, Axios reports.

Said Trump: “No, that’s other people that do that. I don’t. I’m very consistent. I’m a very stable genius.”

Ocasio-Cortez Deploys Campaign Staff to Delaware

July 12, 2018 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the 28-year old former waitress who shocked Democratic Party politics by defeating Rep. Joe Crowley (D-NY) in a primary last month, is deploying members of her growing campaign staff to help another liberal upstart seeking to unseat a longtime Democratic incumbent,” CBS News reports.

“Ocasio-Cortez this week decided to send at least three paid campaign staffers to Delaware to help Kerri Evelyn Harris, an Air Force veteran and community activist who is challenging three-term Sen. Thomas Carper (D-DE) in a Sept. 6 primary.”

Quote of the Day

July 12, 2018 at 7:21 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Trump was in a good mood, he said Europe is a continent he appreciates and which has to develop its defense spending further. But he has WiFi on the plane, so we will have to see in the end.”

— Luxembourg Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, quoted by the Wall Street Journal, on the NATO dinner last night.

Trump Threatens NATO That He’ll ‘Do His Own Thing’

July 12, 2018 at 6:53 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump upended the NATO summit here Thursday by calling an emergency meeting of leaders and threatening that if all member countries do not immediately increase their defense spending commitments, the United States would go it alone,” the Washington Post reports.

“It was not clear whether Trump was threatening a U.S. withdrawal from NATO, but some diplomats perceived his comments that way.”

“Trump told NATO leaders that if they did not meet their defense spending targets of 2 percent of gross domestic product by January, the United States would go it alone… The officials said Trump threatened to ‘do his own thing.’”

Politico: “Some officials urged caution in interpreting Trump’s remarks, but say allies clearly heard a threat.“

GOP Lawmaker Bought Yacht as Tax Bill Passed

July 11, 2018 at 10:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A recently filed financial disclosure shows Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) celebrated passing the House version of the Republican tax bill in quite the lavish way,” Florida Politics reports.

“According to the disclosure, Buchanan spent between $1 million and $5 million purchasing an Ocean Alexander yacht on Nov. 16, 2017, the same day he joined 226 other Republicans and no Democrats in voting for the first draft of the ‘Tax Cuts and Jobs Act.’l

O’Rourke Crushed Cruz In Fundraising

July 11, 2018 at 10:27 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Beto O’Rourke (D) “raised an eye-popping $10.4 million in the last three months — catching up to Sen. Ted Cruz’s (R) six-year haul in just over 15 months as he seeks to topple the Republican darling,” the Dallas Morning News reports.

“The El Paso congressman’s ability to vastly outpace the incumbent is no longer in doubt. Cruz collected about $4 million during the same period, and O’Rourke has extended his streak of raising more than the incumbent in one of the nation’s costliest races.”

Documents May Slow Kavanaugh Confirmation

July 11, 2018 at 8:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The first skirmishes in the battle over the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh for the Supreme Court are about timing, as Republicans seek to hold hearings and install him on the court before the new term in October,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has been noncommittal on exactly how swiftly he can move, as well as on how to handle requests to review potentially millions of documents that crossed the desk of the nominee when he was a White House staff secretary for former President George W. Bush.”

”The prospect that the volume of the Bush papers could hold up the confirmation process was a late concern for the White House as it narrowed in on the nominee.”

Trump Launches Trade War Largely Unchecked

July 11, 2018 at 8:22 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is remaking the global trade order without significant political resistance or penalty, unchecked by a largely compliant Congress and bolstered by the loyalty of his supporters — even those likely to be hurt by his burgeoning global trade war,” the Washington Post reports.

“Congress’s passivity in the face of Trump’s escalating trade conflict is one of several factors that have made it easier for the president to push on. Others have included markets that haven’t melted down, business leaders who have done little beyond using rhetoric to criticize the trade spat, and Republican voters who have stood by their president. In each of these cases, critics of his trade policy had hoped Trump would find reason to be dissuaded.”
