Two House Seats Shift Towards the Democrats

March 12, 2026 at 8:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Cook Political Report: “With or without Issa on the ballot, the new version of California’s 48th District was already quite difficult for Republicans to hold — it’s one of the few Republican-held districts in the House that Kamala Harris carried in 2024. We’re shifting this district from Toss Up to Lean Democrat.”

“We’re also moving Texas’ 23rd District from Solid Republican to Likely Republican. Last week, GOP Rep. Tony Gonzales abandoned his reelection campaign after a series of headlines exposed his affair with a staffer who later died by self-immolation. Republicans’ new nominee, YouTuber and firearm manufacturer Brandon Herrera, has a long history.”

More Vessels Attacked in the Gulf

March 12, 2026 at 8:22 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Explosive-laden Iranian boats appear to have attacked two fuel tankers in Iraqi waters, setting them ablaze and killing one crew member on Wednesday, after projectiles struck four vessels in Gulf waters, said port, maritime security and risk firms,” Reuters reports.

“The latest attacks on ships linked to the U.S. and Europe mark an escalation in the conflict between Iran and U.S.-Israeli forces, raising the number of ships struck in the region since fighting began ‌to at least 16.”

Energy Secretary Says U.S. Not Ready to Escort Tankers

March 12, 2026 at 8:17 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Chris Wright, the U.S. energy secretary, said Thursday that it was “quite likely the case” that the U.S. Navy could begin escorting ships through the Strait of Hormuz by the end of the month, the New York Times reports.

Said Wright: “It’ll happen relatively soon, but it cant happen now. We’re simply not ready.”

China Sends More Warplanes Toward Taiwan

March 12, 2026 at 8:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“China sent more military aircraft into a sensitive area off Taiwan following a brief period that saw it hold off on the flights without explanation,” Bloomberg reports.

Marco Rubio Gets a Shout Out from Trump

March 12, 2026 at 8:04 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “Even by President Donald Trump’s high standards, last night’s speech in Kentucky was a rambler — comfortably breaking the hour mark and including digressions on Jake Paul’s broken jaw, an imaginary wind-powered TV set, and a riff on how hard it can be for presidents to walk down aircraft steps (Barack Obama was the champ, apparently).”

“But Playbook couldn’t help noticing that once again it was Secretary of State Marco Rubio — not VP JD Vance — who got the warmest shout-out from the president, just as it was in last month’s State of the Union address. Also worrying JD this week: Trump’s willingness to call out Vance’s war skepticism in public … and that buzzy WSJ report that in private ‘increasingly Trump has shown fondness for Rubio.'”

“Of course: Vance is still miles ahead in Republican polling — but nobody knows what might happen if and when Trump puts his thumb on the scale. Let’s just hope the president doesn’t look too closely at Rubio’s now-infamous shoe gap.”

Oil Prices Surged Even After Release of Strategic Reserves

March 12, 2026 at 7:37 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Oil futures have again topped $100 a barrel — the latest surge after days of wild price swings in the market since the United States and Israel first struck Iran. But this uptick came after the International Energy Agency on Wednesday announced that more than 30 countries would release a record amount of oil from their emergency reserves.”

“Instead of reassuring jittery markets, the news seemed to further spook traders by underscoring how far the world is from reopening trade in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway and vital trading route that separates Middle Eastern oil producers from their customers. This concern was further reinforced when three ships were attacked in the channel on Wednesday.”

Trump Isn’t Even Trying to Sell This War

March 12, 2026 at 7:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Lemire: “He has now made one of the most consequential decisions of his presidency: launching a war against Iran. The conflict, which is well into its second week, has widened throughout the Middle East, sent oil prices skyrocketing, and caused tumult in the financial markets. Yet Trump has not sold the war. In many ways, he hasn’t even tried.”

“The absence of a sales strategy is all the more confounding when you consider the political stakes.”

Ending Iran War Quickly Carries Big Risks for U.S.

March 12, 2026 at 6:02 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Wall Street Journal: “If Trump proclaims victory, stops the bombing and begins to withdraw the huge air and naval assets he assembled in the Middle East, it could soothe global markets, at least in the short term, and reassure American voters uneasy about the prospect of another forever war.”

“But leaving in place Iran’s theocratic regime—angry, defiant and in possession of its nuclear stockpile and what remains of its arsenal of missiles and drones—would essentially grant Tehran control over the world’s energy markets. It would also sacrifice the security of America’s partners and allies, and possibly make another, more devastating, regional war likely.”

Trump’s Iran War Whiplash Clouds U.S. Endgame

March 12, 2026 at 5:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“After a video call with G7 leaders Wednesday, French President Emmanuel Macron declared publicly what others had said privately: no one can tell what Donald Trump wants from this war,” Axios reports.

“Nearly two weeks in, Trump continues to send conflicting signals about how and when the fighting ends. The confusion has left both allies and adversaries struggling to plan for what comes next.”

Iran’s Sea Mines Are One of Its Most Powerful Weapons

March 12, 2026 at 5:36 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Sea mines are simple weapons that could give Iran outsize power to wreak havoc with the global economy,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“U.S. officials said Wednesday that Iran had laid mines in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway that carries 20% of the world’s oil exports from the Persian Gulf to the rest of the world. The U.S. Institute for the Study of War estimated that 10 mines had been laid, though President Trump cast doubt on such reports and encouraged shippers to traverse the strait.”

Hormuz Crisis Raises Specter of Prolonged Closure

March 12, 2026 at 5:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Escalating Iranian attacks and the U.S. government’s decision to hold off on military escorts for oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz are raising the prospect of a prolonged closure that would choke off exports through the world’s most important energy-transport route,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

“On Wednesday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps struck three cargo ships attempting to transit the waterway, the only sea route out of the Persian Gulf. It warned that any other vessels trying to move through the strait also would be targeted.”

“Later on Wednesday night, in an incident far from the strait, two foreign tankers carrying Iraqi fuel oil were ablaze in Iraqi waters after being hit by projectiles.”

Axios: Iranian oil squeeze tests Trump’s war plans.

Iran Says Any Truce Depends on Promise Not to Strike

March 12, 2026 at 5:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Iran has told regional intermediaries that for a ceasefire, the US must guarantee that neither it nor Israel will strike the country in the future…Iran is particularly concerned Israel will attack again after the current war ends,” Bloomberg reports.

War Against Iran Expands Into Lebanon

March 12, 2026 at 5:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The U.S.-Israeli war against Iran has engulfed Lebanon, pushing the beleaguered country to a new precipice after retaliatory rocket and drone strikes on Israel by Hezbollah, Tehran’s longtime proxy, drew a ferocious bombing campaign and further incursions by Israeli ground forces into border areas of south Lebanon,” the Washington Post reports.

Oil Tops $100 a Barrel

March 12, 2026 at 5:31 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The global price of oil rose above $100 a barrel on Thursday, even after a group of more than 30 countries pledged to tap their reserves to stabilize markets,” the New York Times reports.

“The spike reflected fears that the growing war in the Middle East could cripple a major part of the world’s oil and gas supply for an extended period.”

CNBC: “Strategists said oil prices were trading higher because there appears to be no end in sight to oil supply disruptions through the Strait of Hormuz.”

Axios: Trump faces limited gas-price options on Iran.

Will a Trump Backlash Knock Off Salazar?

March 12, 2026 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“In 2020, Rep. Maria Elvira Salazar’s (R-FL) Miami seat was ground zero for the massive Latino swing toward Republicans in the Donald Trump era. Six years after Salazar first flipped her seat red, Florida Democrats feel they can knock her off because of a restless electorate fuming at Trump’s mass deportations and high prices,” Punchbowl News reports.

“Salazar is still a favorite to win another term, as evidenced by her 20-point reelection victory in 2024. But the top Democrats vying to unseat her — Robin Peguero and Eliott Rodriguez — say Salazar has failed to stick up for her constituents amid Trump’s deportation push.”

“Salazar acknowledged that Trump’s policies are a ‘problem’ for her district and she’s urging the president to refocus his immigration agenda.”

Democrat Crushes Republican in ‘Do-Over’ Election

March 12, 2026 at 5:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Tie goes to the runner… in baseball. In politics, you have a do over,” Insider NJ reports.

“That’s what happened in this western Bergen County town of almost 13,000 after two council candidates both got 2,516 votes last fall. They were Republican Kevin Slasinski, an incumbent, and Independent Matthew Dumpert.”

“The special ‘do over’ election was Tuesday and the results were shocking – especially for local Republicans.”

“Dumpert beat GOP incumbent Slasinski by an overwhelming margin – more than a thousand votes.”
