Georgia NAACP Will Sue Over Voter Registration

October 11, 2018 at 7:46 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Georgia NAACP is preparing to sue Secretary of State Brian Kemp, the Republican nominee for governor, in response to a report that Kemp’s office has put on hold tens of thousands of voter registration applications, most of them from African-Americans, ahead of the election,” Politico reports.

“The injunction would seek to reopen voter registration in Georgia to ensure that 53,000 registrants on hold in Kemp’s office… would be allowed to register for the upcoming election.”

CNN: “Georgia Democrat Stacey Abrams’ campaign is calling on Republican Secretary of State Brian Kemp to resign following a report his office is using a controversial verification law to effectively suppress the minority vote in their race to become the state’s next governor.”

“Over the course of 12 months, the U.S. Army discharged more than 500 immigrant enlistees who were recruited across the globe for their language or medical skills and promised a fast track to citizenship in exchange for their service,” the AP reports.

”The Army began booting out those enlistees last year without explanation.”

Shalala Lags In Race Democrats Had Locked

October 11, 2018 at 7:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Mason-Dixon poll in Florida’s 27th congressional district finds Maria Elvira Salazar (R) edging Donna Shalala (D) by two points, 44% to 42% with 13% undecided.

Politico: “The big factor: Hispanics, who account for 57 percent of the voters and who came to know Salazar relatively well over her three decades broadcasting on Spanish language networks Telemundo, Univision, Mega-TV and CNN Español.”

Also important: “Shalala doesn’t speak Spanish, and Democrats have faulted her campaign for months for being so slow-footed that it was in ‘sleep mode.’”

Which Party’s Voters Are More Enthusiastic?

October 11, 2018 at 7:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Amy Walter: “In a nutshell, here’s what’s going on: Republican enthusiasm is about on par with where it was at the height of the anti-Obama fervor of 2010. But, Democratic enthusiasm is higher than it has ever been.”

“Here’s the other thing. Regardless of where turn-out ends up in November, the enthusiasm gap advantage that Democrats enjoyed throughout 2017-2018 has already taken its toll. It was that energy that prompted a record number of Democrats to run for Congress. And, it prompted Democratic donors to pump a record amount of money to these candidates. Without that enthusiasm boost in 2017 and early 2018, Democrats don’t expand the playing field and don’t have enough money to keep this many seats in play. The barn door may be closed now, but the horses have already escaped.”

“But, enthusiasm and turnout is only one part of the two-part challenge for Republicans in the House. Earlier this year, a GOP strategist told me: ‘If we tie with the Democrats on turnout, but lose with Independents on vote preference, we are still in deep doodoo.'”

Sessions Thinks He May Be Asked to Resign Via Twitter

October 11, 2018 at 5:37 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Trump is considering as many as five candidates as his new attorney general on the assumption that Jeff Sessions will leave his post later this year,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

They are: Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar, Transportation Department general counsel Steven Bradbury, former Attorney General Bill Barr, Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan and Janice Rogers Brown, a retired appeals court judge from the District of Columbia Circuit.

“Mr. Sessions isn’t currently planning to leave, but privately has said that he anticipates he may be asked to resign… The attorney general has told people the request may come on the president’s Twitter feed.”

Democrats Agree on Deal to Confirm Judges

October 11, 2018 at 5:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Senate Democrats accepted an offer from Senate Republicans to confirm 15 lifetime federal judges on Thursday in exchange for agreeing to go into recess through the midterms so endangered Democrats can campaign,” Politico reports.

“After senators weighed the package of three Circuit Court judges and 12 District Court judges on Thursday afternoon, they agreed to the demand from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to confirm roughly the number of judges he could confirm between now and the election if he kept the Senate in continuously. A half-dozen vulnerable Democrats and a pair of at-risk Senate Republicans are eager to go home for the election.”

Americans Use Russian Playbook to Spread Disinformation

October 11, 2018 at 2:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “In 2016, before the presidential election, state-backed Russian operatives exploited Facebook and Twitter to sway voters in the United States with divisive messages. Now, weeks before from the midterm elections on Nov. 6, such influence campaigns are increasingly a domestic phenomenon fomented by Americans on the left and the right.”

“Politics has always involved shadings of the truth via whisper campaigns, direct-mail operations and negative ads bordering on untrue. What is different this time is how domestic sites are directly emulating the Russian playbook of 2016 by aggressively creating networks of Facebook pages and accounts — many of them fake — that make it appear as if the ideas they are promoting enjoy widespread popularity, researchers said. The activity is also happening on Twitter.”

Washington Post: “Facebook said on Thursday it has purged more than 800 U.S publishers and accounts for flooding users with politically-oriented content that violated the company’s spam policies, a move that could reignite accusations of political censorship.”

Adelson Drops ‘Tens of Millions’ More for GOP

October 11, 2018 at 1:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Las Vegas casino mogul Sheldon Adelson is pumping tens of millions of dollars more into Republican Party coffers in an 11th-hour push to save their congressional majorities, according to two senior Republicans familiar with the donation,” Politico reports.

“The move comes as Democrats dominate the TV airwaves. The party has been buoyed by a turbocharged small-donor base that’s flooded House candidates with millions of dollars in contributions. On top of that, former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has pledged to spend $80 million in the final weeks leading up to the midterm election, the vast majority of it to help Democrats seize control of the House.”

Deal Paves Way for Pastor’s Release from Turkey

October 11, 2018 at 1:57 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The White House expects North Carolina pastor Andrew Brunson to be released by the Turkish government and returned to the U.S. in coming days, two years after he was detained,” NBC News reports.

“Under an agreement senior Trump administration officials recently reached with Turkey, Brunson is supposed to be released after certain charges against him are dropped at his next court hearing, currently scheduled for Friday.”

Trump Ridicules Potential 2020 Opponents

October 11, 2018 at 12:54 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump ridiculed his potential Democratic opponents in a Washington Examiner interview and claimed that Sen. Elizabeth Warren “made a living” dishonestly from being “an Indian under minority protections.”

Trump also stated that Sen. Cory Booker had “destroyed Newark” and branded former Vice President Joe Biden as a political failure before “Obama took him off the trash heap.” He labeled Biden “one percent Joe,” a reference to his poor showing in the 2008 Democratic primary race, when he dropped out after securing 0.9 percent of delegates in the Iowa caucuses.

He concluded: “You look at these, the people I just, this is not what our country’s all about.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

October 11, 2018 at 12:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I said to one of my friends, a very wealthy friend, I said, ‘You know, I’ll bet you it cost me $2 or 3 billion and it’s worth every penny of it. I don’t need the money and it’s worth every penny because I’m doing so much for the country.”

— President Trump, quoted by USA Today, saying he’s lost “billions” since becoming president.

Republicans Warn of ‘Green Wave’ of Democratic Cash

October 11, 2018 at 12:00 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “One by one, Democrats running for the House have released jaw-dropping figures the past week: First-time candidates raising $2.7 million in New Jersey, $3.5 million in California’s Central Valley and more than $3.6 million in northern Kentucky.”

“That’s just the previous three months, gaining steam on a fundraising surge that began last year. But the more eye-popping way to examine the Democratic cash is through the combined look at what that money does for their candidates.”

“In terms of television and radio advertising, Democratic candidates are expecting to spend almost $50 million more than their Republican counterparts in about 70 top House races.”
