Democratic Equivocation Over Impeachment Is a Disaster

April 19, 2019 at 12:05 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Greg Sargent: “As the political world digests the shocking scale of corruption, misconduct and skirting of criminality detailed in the Mueller report, Democrats have been pushing back on the idea that it’s time to initiate an inquiry into the impeachment of President Trump.”

“But there’s a key tell lurking in all this pushback: Democrats are not seriously arguing that all the misconduct that has now come to light does not merit an impeachment inquiry.”

“This is creating a situation that’s shaping up as a moral and political disaster. Yet there’s no indication that Democrats are reckoning with the problems this poses. This, even though the basic dynamics of the situation strongly suggest that initiating an inquiry will grow harder to resist over time, not easier.”

Garrett Graff: “If Donald Trump isn’t guilty of obstruction of justice, who ever could be?”

U.S. Falls In World Press Freedom Index

April 19, 2019 at 12:03 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

For the first time since creating the index in 2002, Reporters Without Borders ranked the United States alongside countries whose treatment of journalists is considered “problematic,” the Washington Post reports.

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

April 19, 2019 at 10:50 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“If this was any person other than the president of the United States, I can say as a former prosecutor, this would be a knock down for obstruction. I’ve charged and convicted on obstruction of justice based on a fraction of this evidence.”

— Former prosecutor Elie Honig, interviewed on CNN.

One Million Have Lost Health Coverage Since 2016

April 19, 2019 at 10:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new CBO report finds that more than 1 million Americans have lost health coverage since 2016.

Vox: “The report — which came out within hours of the Mueller report on Thursday and so didn’t get much attention — follows other studies, all suggesting that America’s uninsured rate is rising under President Trump, whose administration has passed new rules that make it more difficult to enroll in coverage.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

April 19, 2019 at 9:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“I think we are in a very difficult time in this country’s history, and I am begging the American people to pay attention to what is going on.”

— Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), in an interview on Morning Joe.

How Trump Desensitized America

April 19, 2019 at 9:26 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Any of those items, taken alone, would seem earth-shattering if they were suddenly being revealed by Mueller’s team for the first time.”

“But we’ve known the broad contours of that behavior for so long, either because it leaked (like Trump ordering Don McGahn to fire Mueller, but backing off when he threatened to resign), or because Trump said it aloud (like his tweets about his displeasure with Jeff Sessions or his professed enthusiasm for Wikileaks)”

“So, many of the most damning parts of the report were things we already knew. But seeing them all in one place is a reminder of this administration’s crisis of credibility. With so many instances of misleading the press and the public, it’s hard to see how this White House ever gets the benefit of the doubt — on anything — again.”

House Judiciary Subpoenas Full Mueller Report

April 19, 2019 at 9:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed the full Muller report following the release of a redacted version on Thursday by the Justice Department,” the Washington Post reports.

“The fight over the Mueller report is expected to land in the courts.”

Quote of the Day

April 19, 2019 at 8:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Mueller passed the obstruction question to the Congress and Barr intercepted the pass.”

— Sen. Angus King (I-ME), in an interview on CNN, adding that Barr “embarrassed himself.”

Trump Calls Claims In Mueller Report ‘Total Bullshit’

April 19, 2019 at 8:52 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump on Friday lashed out over special counsel Robert Mueller’s redacted report a day after declaring the report cleared him of collusion and obstruction, claiming some statements about him in the document “are total bullshit,” The Hill reports.

Said Trump: “Watch out for people that take so-called ‘notes,’ when the notes never existed until needed. Because I never agreed to testify, it was not necessary for me to respond to statements made in the ‘Report’ about me, some of which are total bullshit & only given to make the other person look good (or me to look bad).”

He added: “This was an Illegally Started Hoax that never should have happened.”

Lindsey Graham, Then and Now

April 19, 2019 at 7:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“He doesn’t have to say ‘let’s obstruct justice’ for it to be a crime.”

— Sen. Lindsey Graham, quoted by Now This in 1999, on impeaching President Bill Clinton.

“If the report indicates no collusion found by Mueller, done, over, for me.”

— Graham, in 2019, after the release of the Mueller report.

A Second Offer of Help from the Russians

April 19, 2019 at 7:33 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

NBC News reports there was a second offer of help from the Russians “to provide negative information about candidate Clinton to the Trump Campaign,” included in the Mueller report, but the particulars are redacted because the matter remains under investigation.

“That may or may not relate to something that happened with Trump associate Roger Stone, who was absent from the report because he has been accused of lying to the FBI and the case is still pending.”

Overlooked From George Conway’s Op-Ed

April 19, 2019 at 7:27 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The bio line on George Conway’s blistering op-ed last night calling for President Trump’s impeachment: “George T. Conway III is a lawyer in New York.”

Conway is married to Kellyanne Conway, counselor to President Trump.

Friends Pitted Against Each Other

April 19, 2019 at 7:23 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Bill Barr and Robert Mueller have been close friends for 30 years, from the Justice Department to family weddings and the Bible-study group attended by both their wives.”

“Now they’re anchoring two ends of a legal high-wire act playing out through press conferences, congressional hearings and close-up reviews of the special counsel’s long-awaited findings on Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.”

“The bond between the two men has been stressed over the last month amid a volley of letters and closed-door negotiations among their aides. Finally, on Thursday, the release of Mueller’s final report showcased the large amounts of daylight between the veteran law enforcement officials on fundamental questions at the heart of Donald Trump’s presidency.”

Trump Worried McGahn Wore a Wire

April 19, 2019 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Late in Don McGahn’s tenure as White House counsel, President Trump became so suspicious that he wondered aloud whether McGahn was wearing a wire,” a source familiar with the president’s private conversations told Axios.

“We have no evidence that Trump’s suspicions have any basis in reality. But they reveal the depth of his paranoia about his former counsel, who sat for many hours with Robert Mueller’s team of prosecutors.”

“Anger at McGahn after the report came out was shared among a number of Trump allies, both inside the White House and close to the president.”

A Portrait of the Trump White House

April 19, 2019 at 6:46 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “The White House that emerges from more than 400 pages of Mr. Mueller’s report is a hotbed of conflict infused by a culture of dishonesty — defined by a president who lies to the public and his own staff, then tries to get his aides to lie for him.”

Washington Post: “The vivid portrait that emerges from Mueller’s 448-page report is of a presidency plagued by paranoia, insecurity and scheming — and of an inner circle gripped by fear of Trump’s spasms. Again and again, Trump frantically pressured his aides to lie to the public, deny true news stories and fabricate a false record.”

Biden Will Enter Presidential Race Next Week

April 19, 2019 at 6:39 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

The Atlantic: “Joe Biden is running. The former vice president will make his candidacy official with a video announcement next Wednesday.”

“Seriously, he’s actually made a decision. It’s taken two years of back and forth, it’ll be his third (or depending on how you count, seventh) try for the White House, many people thought he wouldn’t actually do it, but the biggest factor reshaping the 2020 Democratic primary field is actually locking into place.”

First Read: “The Atlantic reports that the campaign is weighing a more lighthearted announcement on the Rocky steps in Philadelphia OR one in Charlottesville to take on Trump on race and division. Those are two radically different opening messages. One’s upbeat and hopeful, and one is solemn and weighty.”

“That sure seems like a huge decision to be indecisive about less than a week before go time.”
