The GOP’s Growing Identity Crisis

September 21, 2018 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Republican Party is suffering an identity crisis that poses acute short- and long-term risks: President Trump, with 38% approval in Gallup, is giving the party a constricted appeal, with the danger of continuing high-profile defections,” Axios reports.

“In a 50-50 nation, marginal defections can incapacitate a party.”

“The GOP, long synonymous with conservatism, is now effectively the Trump Party — in policy, branding and support. That leaves some swaths of traditional conservatives without a major-party home, and endangers Republican electoral fortunes.”

Trump Tells Senate to Move Ahead on Kavanaugh

September 20, 2018 at 10:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump urged the Senate “to get on with” the confirmation of his Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, while casting additional doubt on the woman who has accused him of sexual assault, USA Today reports.

Said Trump: “Why didn’t someone call the FBI 36 years ago?”

He added: “They’ve delayed it a week already. They’ve delayed it a week, and they have to get on with it.”

Kavanaugh Accuser Offers to Testify Later Next Week

September 20, 2018 at 9:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An attorney for Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were teenagers, said Thursday that her appearing at a hearing on Monday to detail her claims is ‘not possible’ but she could testify later in the week,” the Washington Post reports.

“The chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Sen. Charles E. Grassley (R-IA) said through a spokesman late Thursday that he would be consulting with colleagues on how to proceed. Kavanaugh wrote to Grassley in a letter released by the White House that he looks forward to testifying.”

Cohen Tweets, Then Deletes, Praise for Himself

September 20, 2018 at 9:06 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

After reports surfaced that Michael Cohen was cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller, the following message went out of Cohen’s twitter account:

Good for @michaelcohen212 in providing critical information to the #muellerinvestigation without a cooperation agreement. No one should question his honesty, veracity or loyalty to his #family and #country over @potus @realdonaldtrump

Vox reports the tweet was quickly deleted, but reappeared soon after on the account of attorney Lanny Davis.

More Oppose Kavanaugh Than Support Him

September 20, 2018 at 5:58 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new NBC News/Wall Street Journal finds that more American voters now oppose Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination than support it after he was accused of committing sexual assault while he was in high school, with opposition increasing 9 points since last month.

Key findings: 38% of voters say they oppose Kavanaugh’s nomination to serve on the nation’s highest court, including 27% who “strongly” oppose him. That’s compared with 34% who support his nomination, including 25% who “strongly” support him. Twenty-eight percent say they don’t enough to have an opinion.

Republicans Have Lost Messaging Battle on Tax Cuts

September 20, 2018 at 5:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new RNC survey has led Republicans “to a glum conclusion regarding President Trump’s signature legislative achievement: Voters overwhelmingly believe his tax overhaul helps the wealthy instead of average Americans,” Bloomberg reports.

Key finding: “By a 2-to-1 margin — 61% to 30% — respondents said the law benefits ‘large corporations and rich Americans’ over ‘middle class families.'”

“The result was fueled by self-identified independent voters who said by a 36-point margin that large corporations and rich Americans benefit more from the tax law — a result that was even more lopsided among Democrats. Republican voters said by a 38-point margin that the middle class benefits more.”

September 20, 2018 at 5:25 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A new Public Policy Policy survey in Texas finds Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) slightly ahead of challenger Beto O’Rourke (D), 48% to 45%.

That’s well within the poll’s 4-point margin of error.

McDaniel Says Kavanaugh Allegations Were ‘Fabricated’

September 20, 2018 at 4:29 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mississippi U.S. Senate candidate Chris McDaniel (R) said the sexual assault allegations against Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh were made up, the AP reports.

Said McDaniel: “They’re going to drag something up, at least even theoretically, allegedly, from all those years ago. All of the sudden, that disqualifies this man? All of the sudden, he’s a terrible human being? No, not a chance. You know, I don’t fall for it anymore. I hope the American people aren’t falling for it. These allegations, 99 percent of the time, are just absolutely fabricated.”

He added: “I’m tired of all these made-up scandals, frankly.”

Extra Bonus Quote of the Day

September 20, 2018 at 4:15 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“We got a little hiccup here with the Kavanaugh nomination. We’ll get through this and we’ll get off to the races.”

— Sen. Dean Heller (R-NV), quoted by the Nevada Independent, downplaying the sexual assault allegations against Judge Brett Kavanaugh.

Cohen Has Spent Hours with Mueller’s Team

September 20, 2018 at 3:44 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Michael Cohen “has participated over the last month in multiple interview sessions lasting for hours with investigators from the office of special counsel, Robert Mueller,” ABC News reports.

“The special counsel’s questioning of Cohen, one of the president’s closest associates over the past decade, has focused primarily on all aspects of Trump’s dealings with Russia — including financial and business dealings and the investigation into alleged collusion with Russia by the Trump campaign and its surrogates to influence the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.”

“Investigators were also interested in knowing whether Trump or any of his associates discussed the possibility of a pardon with Cohen.”

Kavanaugh Accuser Taps Democratic Operative

September 20, 2018 at 3:41 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Christine Blasey Ford, the woman who has accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexually assaulting her when they were both teenagers, is being advised by Democratic operative Ricki Seidman,” Politico reports.

“Seidman worked as Joe Biden’s communications director during the 2008 general election campaign, after he was named Barack Obama’s running mate. In 2009, she helped the White House manage the confirmation of Obama’s Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor.”

Raking In Campaign Cash While Running Unopposed

September 20, 2018 at 3:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

At least 26 legislative leaders in statehouses across America “are raking in cash despite running unopposed this year,” the Center for Public Integrity reports.

“Two of these power brokers have already raised more than $2 million apiece.”

“The safe legislators represent an attractive prospect for statehouse lobbyists and power-seekers: the sure bet. Contributions to these influential politicians can buy face time and favor with those who set state legislative agendas… The money also compounds their power: Legislative leaders use their pots of gold to buy presents to thank supporters, for example, or give to fellow lawmakers’ campaigns to reward them for voting with their party.”

What a Democratic Congress Would Mean for Trump

September 20, 2018 at 2:59 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Most political analysts think that, come January, the makeup of Congress will drastically change. Democrats are favored to win back control of the House of Representatives in November’s midterm elections for the first time since 2010. They have a chance — though a much narrower one — to take back the Senate, too.”

“What would that mean for Trump? Would his agenda be stymied? Would his job be in jeopardy? Or could he and Democrats find areas of compromise, like on immigration and trade? Here are three possible election result scenarios, and what they could mean for the president in 2019 and beyond.”

Kavanaugh Accuser Reopens Discussions on Testifying

September 20, 2018 at 2:45 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Christine Blasey Ford, who has accused Judge Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault, has told the Senate Judiciary Committee that she “would be prepared to testify next week,” so long as senators offer “terms that are fair and which ensure her safety,” the New York Times reports.

However, her lawyer said that the timetable Republicans have set for a hearing “is not possible and the Committee’s insistence that it occur then is arbitrary in any event.”

The lawyer reiterated that it is Dr. Blasey’s “strong preference” that “a full investigation” occur before her testimony but stopped short of demanding an F.B.I. probe and suggested she is open to testifying without one.

GOP Lawmaker Jokes About Kavanaugh Allegations

September 20, 2018 at 2:33 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) “opened an election debate Thursday by joking that he almost had to miss it and fly back to Washington to address the latest drama involving the Supreme Court,” the Charleston Post & Courier reports.

Said Norman: “Did y’all hear the latest late-breaking news on the Kavanaugh hearings? Ruth Bader Ginsburg came out saying she was groped by Abraham Lincoln.”

Norman is the same lawmaker who pulled out a gun at a town meeting earlier this year and said, “I’m not going to be Gabby Giffords.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

September 20, 2018 at 1:56 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“That’s like somebody saying I can’t play ball. That doesn’t bother me at all. What bothers me is that he has time to even do that. He has the most powerful job in the world. Like, you really got this much time that you can comment on me?”

— LeBron James, in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter, on President Trump insulting his intelligence.

Kavanaugh Preps Again for Possible Testimony

September 20, 2018 at 1:20 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh “was back at the White House complex Thursday, amid a week of visits that have included preparation for the possibility of additional Senate testimony,” NBC News reports.

“In a private session Tuesday, Kavanaugh was grilled by a small group of White House staff about his past, his dating life and his accuser… Kavanaugh, who returned to the White House for a third consecutive day Thursday, is ‘determined and hopeful.'”
