Kasich Says Trump Wasn’t Invited to Campaign In Ohio

August 6, 2018 at 8:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Ohio Gov. John Kasich (R) told ABC News that he asked congressional candidate Troy Balderson (R) last week why he invited President Trump to campaign for him ahead of this week’s special election. According to Kasich, Balderson replied, “No I didn’t.”

Said Kasich: “I think Donald Trump decides where he wants to go. I think they think they are firing up the base.”

Kasich warned that Trump’s appearance in Ohio could hurt Balderson because “the chaos that seems to surround Donald Trump has unnerved a lot of people. Suburban women in particular here are the ones that are really turned off. It’s really kind of shocking because this (special election) should be just a slam dunk and it’s not.”

The Columbus Dispatch reports Balderson won’t address Kasich’s claim.

Bernie vs. Emily’s List

August 6, 2018 at 8:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

First Read: “Back in 2016, there wasn’t much love lost between Bernie Sanders and EMILY’s List, the Democratic advocacy group that backs pro-abortion-rights female political candidates. The groups two sparred over candidate endorsements (including for Hillary Clinton) and the campaign’s ‘condescending’ comments about Clinton’s campaign, and — last year — over Sanders’ appearance at a women’s conference.”

“Fast forward to now, and the two factions are facing off more and more in the 2018 Democratic primaries. And that’s largely been because Sanders — in races that feature prominent women — has often endorsed a rival male candidate instead.”

“It all feels like a replay of the Sanders-Clinton wars of 2016, a conflict so steeped in gender issues that the term ‘Bernie Bro’ was born. Our take: In a year when women are such a dominant force in Democratic politics, the narrative that Sanders isn’t prioritizing female candidates may not be great for his brand in the long run.”

Insiders Think Trump Will Talk to Mueller

August 6, 2018 at 7:25 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Insiders tell Mike Allen they believe President Trump will wind up giving an interview to special counsel Robert Mueller.

“Trump wants to, he thinks he can make his own best case, and no one around him can restrain him.”

Said one associate: “He just can’t help himself.”

Rick Gates Takes Center Stage at Manafort Trial

August 6, 2018 at 7:19 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “Whom to believe — the accused liar, or the admitted one? A Virginia jury is expected to wrestle with that question this week, when it is scheduled to hear testimony from the former protege of Paul Manafort, President Trump’s former campaign chairman now facing trial on bank fraud and tax charges.”

“Rick Gates worked for years as Manafort’s right-hand man, managing his clients, his business, and his accounts. He also served as a senior Trump campaign aide and played a major role in planning the 2017 inauguration. This week, Gates begins a new role: star witness against his former boss and business partner.”

Most Top Democrats Are Avoiding Iowa

August 6, 2018 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Associated Press: “For now, top-tier prospective Democratic presidential candidates, including former Vice President Joe Biden and Sens. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Cory Booker of New Jersey, Kamala Harris of California and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York are largely steering clear of Iowa.”

“The Democratic Party’s top stars have their reasons. Several say they are focused on ensuring the party is successful in regaining control of at least one chamber of Congress in the midterm elections. Some will be on the ballot themselves in November so they must lock down their own victory before being so bold as to go to Iowa.”

“Still, their absence surprises veteran Democratic activists and stokes the perennial worry about the future of the state’s early status.”

What Trump Learned from Charlottesville

August 6, 2018 at 6:58 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Trump’s poll numbers, while still hitting a ceiling below 50 percent, in the year since Charlottesville have climbed up to a high of 44%, according to a recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Trump is in high demand as a campaign surrogate among Republican candidates.”

“His supportive gang of Fox News hosts have become more ethno-nationalist in their rhetoric than they were a year ago. Meanwhile, Trump himself is less constrained than he was after Charlottesville. At his campaign rallies and on Twitter, he has become more unadulterated in his critiques of what he calls the ‘fake news’ media.”

“The advisers who tried to serve as a check on his rash impulses have since left the administration and have been replaced with people more likely to let Trump set his own agenda. And, as he did on Friday, the president has continued to inflame racial tensions — something Democrats and Republicans alike see as fundamental to his power.”

Democrats Start to Worry About Menendez

August 6, 2018 at 6:47 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Facing a deep-pocketed Republican challenger, a blitz of negative ads and lingering concerns over a lackluster performance in an uncontested primary, Mr. Menendez’s race has started to concern some Democrats. After weathering a criminal indictment and a harsh ethics rebuke from his Senate peers, Mr. Menendez may find himself in a tough enough re-election fight that will force the party to devote money and energy needed in other races critical to the party’s quest to retake Congress.”

All Eyes on Ohio

August 6, 2018 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Playbook: “The story that matters the most this week is in Columbus, Ohio, where Republican Troy Balderson will face off against Democrat Danny O’Connor for a solidly red House seat. This race will give us a good sense of the landscape at the moment. It’s a Republican district that the GOP has held for 35 years and Cook rates as an R+7. So a Democratic win or anything close would indicate that the Ds have a massive advantage going into November.“

The American Dream Died In 2008

August 5, 2018 at 11:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Frank Rich: “The mood in America is arguably as dark as it has ever been in the modern era. The birthrate is at a record low, and the suicide rate is at a 30-year high; mass shootings and opioid overdoses are ubiquitous. In the aftermath of 9/11, the initial shock and horror soon gave way to a semblance of national unity in support of a president whose electoral legitimacy had been bitterly contested only a year earlier. Today’s America is instead marked by fear and despair more akin to what followed the crash of 1929, when unprecedented millions of Americans lost their jobs and homes after the implosion of businesses ranging in scale from big banks to family farms.”

“It’s not hard to pinpoint the dawn of this deep gloom: It arrived in September 2008, when the collapse of Lehman Brothers kicked off the Great Recession that proved to be a more lasting existential threat to America than the terrorist attack of seven Septembers earlier. The shadow it would cast is so dark that a decade later, even our current run of ostensible prosperity and peace does not mitigate the one conviction that still unites all Americans: Everything in the country is broken.”

Apple Removes Alex Jones Podcasts from iTunes

August 5, 2018 at 11:19 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Apple has removed the entire library for five of Infowars’ six podcasts from its iTunes and Podcast apps,” BuzzFeed News has learned.

“Among the deleted podcasts are the show ‘War Room’ as well as the popular Alex Jones Show podcast, which is hosted daily by the prominent conspiracy theorist.”

“Apple’s decision to remove all episodes of Jones’ popular show — rather than just specific offending episodes — is one of the largest enforcement actions intended to curb conspiratorial news content by a technology company to date.”

GOP Worried Trump Will Endorse Kobach

August 5, 2018 at 9:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “Senior Republican officials have told me they’re holding their breath, hoping Trump won’t endorse hardliner Kris Kobach in Tuesday’s Kansas gubernatorial primary. Kobach is as far right as a Republican gets on immigration and voting rights, and Democrats view his potential victory as an opportunity to steal centrist voters.”

“A source close to Trump told me they thought the president had been convinced to hold off on supporting Kobach. But he added he couldn’t be confident, given that Trump is in Bedminster with a cell phone and plenty of Executive Time.”

Democrats Surging Ahead of Special Election

August 5, 2018 at 8:50 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The entire Republican Party machinery has converged on this suburban Columbus district for a furious eleventh-hour campaign aimed at saving a conservative House seat and averting another special election disaster,” Politico reports.

“But in the final days ahead of Tuesday’s election, signs were everywhere that Democrats are surging — from recent polling to the private and public statements of many Republicans, including the GOP candidate himself. The district has been reliably red for more than three decades, but the sheer size of the Republican cavalry made clear how worried the party is about losing it.”

The TIVO Presidency

August 5, 2018 at 8:34 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Jonathan Swan: “Like an NFL coach reviewing game film, President Trump likes to watch replays of his debate and rally performances. But instead of looking for weaknesses in technique or for places to improve, Trump luxuriates in the moments he believes are evidence of his brilliance.”

“Trump commentates as he watches, according to sources who’ve sat with him and viewed replays on his TiVo, which is pre-loaded with his favorites on the large TV in the private dining room adjoining the Oval Office. When watching replays, Trump will interject commentary, reveling in his most controversial lines. ‘Wait for it. … See what I did there?’ he’ll say.”

Said Trump, per one insider: “People think it’s easy. I’ve been doing this a long time now and people are used to it, every rally, it’s like, people have said P.T. Barnum. People have said that before. And they think that’s easy, because hey, P.T. Barnum, he does the circus. … They don’t realize, it’s a lot of work. It’s not easy.”

Harassment Allegations Haven’t Stopped All Candidates

August 5, 2018 at 8:32 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

New York Times: “Almost a year into an antiharassment movement that has prompted a coast-to-coast cultural reckoning, Mr. Shooter and Mr. Sawyer are among more than a dozen politicians who have been accused of misconduct and are running for state legislatures again anyway.”

”Among them are a Kentucky legislator accused of sending racy text messages to an aide, a Pennsylvania lawmaker involved in a six-figure sexual harassment settlement and a Wisconsin representative accused of forcible kissing.”

“Some candidates hope that voters will accept their apologies. Others believe constituents will dismiss the allegations as untrue — or deem them unimportant at a time when state legislatures could play crucial roles either in advancing the Trump administration’s agenda or forming bulwarks against it.”

Bonus Quote of the Day

August 5, 2018 at 2:36 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“This has never happened before. We’ve had great presidents; we’ve had terrible presidents, Republicans and Democrats; but we’ve never had anything like this — where we have a president who is incapable of telling the truth.”

— Former White House press secretary Joe Lockhart, in an interview on CNN.

McConnell Announces He’ll Run Again In 2020

August 5, 2018 at 2:23 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Saying it was never too soon to start, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell formally announced his 2020 re-election bid in his home state Saturday and tapped the young leader of the state’s House Republicans as his campaign chairman,” the AP reports.

Said McConnell: “I don’t like starting late.”

Cruz Says Obama Was a ‘Russian Bootlicker’

August 5, 2018 at 1:28 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) “used a protester’s outburst Saturday to riff on how unhinged the left is, how the display of anger was evidence of the tough race he faces against Rep. Beto O’Rourke in the fall, and how it was really President Obama who colluded with Russia,” the Austin American Statesman reports.

Said Cruz: “It seems to me the very definition of cowardice is standing up and screaming like a child and being afraid to engage in any substance, not knowing any substance, which is why you’re afraid to engage in any substance, and just yelling, ‘Russia, Russia, Russia,’ which is what I guess the fever swamps of the left have told him.”

He added: “The irony of course is that eight years of Obama were eight years of absolute appeasement. We saw eight years of bootlicking for Vladimir Putin.”
