Marjorie Taylor Greene Backs Obamacare Subsidies

October 7, 2025 at 8:48 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) broke with Republicans on Obamacare subsidies, saying that while she’s not a fan of the health care law, Congress must act to prevent a premium hike.

Said Greene: “I’m absolutely disgusted that health insurance premiums will double if the tax credits expire this year.”

October 7, 2025 at 8:44 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Flights into airports serving New York, Denver and the Los Angeles area were delayed on Monday night because of shortages of air traffic controllers, hours after the transportation secretary warned that flying could be disrupted by the government shutdown,” the New York Times reports.

Treasury Defends Minting a $1 Trump Coin

October 7, 2025 at 8:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration on Monday defended its plan to mint a $1 coin bearing the image of President Trump despite the fact that an 1866 law dictates that only the deceased can appear on U.S. currency,” the New York Times reports.

“Initial designs for the coins released by the U.S. treasurer last week stirred controversy and accusations that the Trump administration was violating the law so that Mr. Trump could honor himself by putting his face on a coin. The 1866 law enshrined a tradition that individuals could appear on U.S. currency only posthumously to avoid the appearance that America was a monarchy.”

“But in a post on Monday, the Treasury Department said that featuring Mr. Trump on a coin in celebration of the nation’s 250th birthday was authorized under the Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020.”

October 7, 2025 at 8:35 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s “my way or the highway” message to hundreds of generals and admirals at a summit in Virginia last week has sparked fears that some top leaders may choose to bow out of the U.S. military entirely, NewsNation reports.

Jay Jones Scandal Throws Virginia Democrats Into Crisis

October 7, 2025 at 8:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A scandal over resurfaced texts from Virginia Democratic attorney general candidate Jay Jones has Democrats in a catch-22,” Axios reports.

“A month before Election Day, pushing Jones off the ticket could fracture Democrats’ chances in a pivotal statewide race seen as a bellwether for next year.”

“But standing by him risks reinforcing Republican attacks about double standards on political violence.”

October 7, 2025 at 7:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Why Aren’t We Partying Like It’s 1999?

October 7, 2025 at 7:51 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Paul Krugman: “The surge in AI investment — a tech boom the likes of which we haven’t seen since the 1990s — has buoyed the economy in the short run, offsetting the drag from Trump’s tariffs. Without the data center boom, we’d probably be in a recession. But hundreds of billions in spending on data centers have boosted investment, while soaring stock prices have supported consumer spending by the wealthy even as demand from lower and middle-income Americans weakens.”

“However, unlike the tech boom of the 1990s, the current AI boom isn’t translating into widespread economic optimism. In fact, Americans are remarkably downbeat about the economy and the future in general. And I think it’s worth trying to understand why.”

Carlyle Proprietary Data Shows Weak U.S. Employment

October 7, 2025 at 7:45 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Carlyle Group, the investment manager whose portfolio companies employ more than 700,000 people globally, is stepping into the economic data void left by the US government shutdown with a grim read on the labor market,” Bloomberg reports.

“The US Labor Department’s September employment report, whose scheduled release on Oct. 3 was among those that have been postponed since the shutdown began last week, was expected by economists in a Bloomberg poll to show a 54,000 increase in nonfarm payrolls from August’s total of about 159 million. Carlyle estimates that just 17,000 jobs were created, among the weakest results since the US economy emerged from the 2020 recession.”

White House Memo Says Workers Won’t Get Back Pay

October 7, 2025 at 7:32 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Furloughed federal workers aren’t guaranteed compensation for their forced time off during the government shutdown, according to a draft White House memo, Axios reports.

“If the White House acts on that legal analysis, it would dramatically escalate President Trump’s pressure on Senate Democrats to end the week-old shutdown by denying back pay to as many as 750,000 federal workers after the shutdown.”

Mass Firing Threats Don’t Faze Democrats

October 7, 2025 at 7:30 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump said Monday he’s on the verge of enacting mass firings of federal workers. But Democrats say it won’t make them budge in the increasingly rancorous shutdown standoff,” Politico reports.

“The mass layoffs, dreamed up by White House budget director Russ Vought, would be the most significant pressure point yet as the shutdown enters a seventh day Tuesday — if Trump follows through. Already he has blown past Vought’s own prediction that firings would start by the end of last week, and no action was taken in the immediate aftermath of a fifth failed Senate vote Monday to reopen the government.”

October 7, 2025 at 7:28 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Washington Post: “It was our duty in office to warn of dangers when we found them. We’re doing that again today.”

“President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance returned to TikTok on Monday for the first time since the 2024 election, putting an end to their nearly yearlong hiatus from the app as the administration fought to sell it to American owners,” Politico reports.

Said Trump, in a video: “To all of those young people of TikTok, I saved TikTok, so you owe me big.”

October 7, 2025 at 6:54 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Sen. Angus King (I-ME), one of three non-Republicans to vote for the Republicans’ “clean” government funding bill, told reporters he may stop supporting it because Republicans’ comments on extending Obamacare subsidies are insufficient.

Trump to Announce Farmer Bailout

October 7, 2025 at 6:49 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“The Trump administration is expected to announce a plan as soon as Tuesday to bail out U.S. farmers stung by trade disputes and big harvests, with the initial outlay potentially totaling up to $15 billion,” Reuters reports.

“The plan, however, could be difficult to roll out as an ongoing government shutdown prevents the kind of Congressional action needed to approve such a large payout, and existing government reserves fall short, the sources said.”

Trump Sets Up Legal Clash Testing Presidential Power

October 7, 2025 at 6:43 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“President Donald Trump’s latest bid to deploy the military on U.S. soil over local opposition is triggering a new conflict with blue state governors that is playing out in the courts as Trump envisages a country where armed soldiers patrol U.S. streets,” the AP reports.

“Trump has already pushed traditional boundaries by using the National Guard domestically, envisioning a muscular role for the U.S. military in targeting illegal immigration and crime in American cities.”

“His attempt to deploy California National Guard members to Oregon and Texas Guardsmen to Illinois is a sprawling use of presidential power. Next steps in lawsuits filed by Democrat-led states will likely address significant questions of constitutional law, federalism and the separation of powers — setting up a potential collision between the courts and Trump’s aggressive use of the National Guard.”

Politico: Courts confront militarized cities as Trump tests the waters with National Guard deployments.
