Making Trumpism the New Normal

April 5, 2018 at 8:38 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Time profiles Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL): “It’s easy to write Gaetz off as nothing more than a troll, someone who provokes for provocation’s sake. But to do so is to ignore both his policy interests (he’s sponsored 15 bills this term) and the skill with which he reads the Republican electorate. His audience is the demographic of Americans whose politics are less dogma than reflex: a reaction to the perceived sanctimony of a progressive cultural climate that treats conservatism as a punch line and scolds those who fail to use the correct gender pronouns.”

Said Gaetz: “The convention that one should never be perceived to troll another that has a different viewpoint is a very country club approach to politics. And we’re sort of in the era of Caddyshack. The caddies have taken over the country club.”

Maddow Is Most-Watched Cable News Host

April 5, 2018 at 8:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Forbes: “In March, The Rachel Maddow Show finished as the highest-rated show in cable news, with an average total audience of 3.058 million viewers–the show’s best-ever performance in the 9 p.m. ET hour. FNC’s Hannity was second, with 3.000 million viewers. Maddow also won among viewers 25-54, the demographic most valued by advertisers, finishing March with an average audience of 671,000 compared to Hannity’s 616,000. CNN finished a distant third in the hour, with 382,000 viewers 25-54.”

A Dangerous Time In the White House

April 5, 2018 at 8:08 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Mike Allen: “To White House insiders, this is the most dangerous phase of Donald Trump’s presidency so far, from the brewing trade war with China that he denies is a trade war, to the perilously spontaneous summit with North Korea.”

“Checks are being ignored or have been eliminated, and critics purged as the president is filling time by watching Fox, and by eating dinner with people who feed his ego and conspiracy theories, and who drink in his rants. Both sides are getting more polarized and dug in — making the daily reality more absurd, and the potential consequences less urgent and able to grab people’s serious attention.”

“Trump’s closest confidants speak with an unusual level of concern, even alarm, and admit to being confused about what the president will do next —  and why.”

Ex-Fiancee says GOP Adviser Made Her His Slave

April 5, 2018 at 7:18 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A Las Vegas political adviser who worked on national campaigns and high-profile Nevada races sexually enslaved and battered his ex-fiancée before police responded to a domestic dispute,” the woman told the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

“The 46-year-old woman provided copies of emails, text messages and a signed contract laying out her duties as a ‘slave in training’ to Benjamin Sparks.”

“Sparks and his ex-fiancée signed a five-page contract stating that she would be his ‘slave and property.’ Under the contract, the woman was forced to kneel and look down when she entered his presence, be nude at all times, have sexual relations with him whenever he wanted and wear a collar in private.”

Pruitt Launches Campaign to Save His Job

April 5, 2018 at 7:13 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“EPA chief Scott Pruitt and his allies in the administration are on a mission to save his job — offering a blitz of interviews to friendly media outlets while separately accusing a former agency staffer of a cascade of damaging leaks. But the White House made it clear Wednesday that President Trump is not pleased with all the negative headlines surrounding him,” Politico reports.

“Pruitt’s challenges appeared to deepen when White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders — asked why Trump is ‘OK’ with the leader of the Environmental Protection Agency renting a condo from a lobbyist for $50 a night — responded that ‘the president’s not.’”

The Daily Beast reports White House chief of staff John Kelly called Pruitt to say that, “though he has the full public confidence of President Trump for now, the flow of negative and damning stories needed to stop soon.”

Jonathan Swan: “If nothing else bad comes out against Pruitt, they’ll probably ride through the storm with him. But should more damaging stories surface — especially ones that demonstrate poor ethical judgement — Pruitt could be abandoned in a flash. Trump is uneasy about the situation, and has his finger in the wind.”

White House Aides Prep for Iran Deal Pullout

April 5, 2018 at 7:12 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Anticipating an unpredictable president’s next moves, U.S. officials have started actively planning for the likelihood that Donald Trump will announce next month that the U.S. is withdrawing from the Iran nuclear deal. But no one knows exactly what would happen next or how Iran would respond,” the AP reports.

“Still, with less than five weeks until President Donald Trump’s deadline, national security officials are exploring various ‘day after’ scenarios. Those include how to sell a pullout as the correct strategy, how aggressively to reimpose U.S. sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the agreement and how to deal with Iranian and European fallout from such a step, according to officials, diplomats and outside advisers to the administration.”

Bolton Already Runs Into Ethical Issues

April 5, 2018 at 7:07 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“John Bolton, who is days away from becoming President Trump’s national security advisor, has been meeting with White House attorneys about possible conflicts of interest,” CNBC reports.

“The exact sticking points for Bolton are unclear, but ethics experts say the appearance of a possible future role for Bolton with an entity such as a political action committee could be a cause for concern for White House officials.”

Trump’s Dinner Diplomacy

April 5, 2018 at 7:05 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “Even as the president has withdrawn from the types of public events that were standard for his predecessors, he’s sustained the dinner party as a staple of presidential power – though he’s traded the high-wattage salons hosted by the Obamas for clubby interactions with people he considers peers, according to eight current and former administration officials and sources who have been to the meals. The parties, which have recently ramped up, afford Trump the chance to do something he loves – play host – a role that runs contrary to the narrative of him isolated at night in the White House.”

Trump’s Easy Campaign Promises Hit Hard Realities

April 5, 2018 at 7:03 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“An emboldened President Trump is discovering that the policies he once described as easy fixes for the nation are a lot more complicated in reality — creating backlash among allies, frustrating supporters and threatening the pocketbooks of many farming communities that helped get him elected,” the Washington Post reports.

“Freed from the caution of former advisers, Trump has spent recent weeks returning to the gut-level basics that got him elected: tough talk on China, a promise of an immigration crackdown and an isolationist approach to national security.”

“Several people who have spoken to the president say he is telling advisers that he is finally expediting the policies that got him elected and is more comfortable without a number of aides around him who were tempering his instincts. And he often cites rising poll numbers in recent weeks as a reason he should do it his own way.”

Tillerson’s $12 Million Legacy

April 5, 2018 at 6:59 am EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

Politico: “It was one of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s core goals: radically reshaping the State Department to make it leaner, cheaper and modernized to the standards of a former private-sector CEO. Now that Tillerson has been fired, the vaunted ‘Redesign’ initiative he launched faces an uncertain future, but at least one clear legacy: around $12 million dollars spent just for private consultants who in some cases charged the State Department more than $300 an hour.”

“As many as 90 consultants worked on the project, according to one document. Many of the consultants have spent extensive time at the State Department, meeting with top officials, collecting and analyzing data, creating PowerPoint presentations and leading group discussions with skeptical employees.”

Trump Gets Testy at National Security Team

April 4, 2018 at 8:12 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

President Trump “grew irritated with his top military brass and national security team on Tuesday when they advised him an immediate withdrawal of US troops from Syria would be unwise and could not provide a timeline for when American forces could exit,” CNN reports.

“In a sometimes-tense meeting of his national security team, Trump complained at length about the amount of American money being spent in the region, which he said had produced nothing for the US in return.”

Mueller Witness Who Advises UAE Also Has Ties to Russia

April 4, 2018 at 8:10 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“A witness who is cooperating in the special counsel investigation, George Nader, has connections to both the Persian Gulf states and Russia and may have information that links two important strands of the inquiry together,” the New York Times reports.

“Mr. Nader’s ties to the United Arab Emirates are well documented — he is an adviser to its leader — but the extent of his links to Russia have not been previously disclosed.”

Kudlow Talks Down Tariffs

April 4, 2018 at 7:17 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow stressed U.S. tariffs announced on Chinese goods are still only proposals that might never take effect as the Trump administration sought to tamp down fears of a trade war,” Bloomberg reports.

Said Kudlow: “None of the tariffs have been put in place yet, these are all proposals. We’re putting it out for comment. There’s at least two months before any actions are taken.”

Mueller Questions Russian Oligarchs

April 4, 2018 at 5:13 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team has taken the unusual step of questioning Russian oligarchs who traveled into the US, stopping at least one and searching his electronic devices when his private jet landed at a New York area airport,” CNN reports.

“The situations have one thing in common: Investigators are asking whether wealthy Russians illegally funneled cash donations directly or indirectly into Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and inauguration.”

“One area under scrutiny… is investments Russians made in companies or think tanks that have political action committees that donated to the campaign.”

“Another theory Mueller’s office is pursuing… is whether wealthy Russians used straw donors — Americans with citizenship — as a vessel through which they could pump money into the campaign and inauguration fund.”

Tennessee Lawmaker Improperly Used Campaign Funds

April 4, 2018 at 5:07 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

“Congressional ethics investigators say they have found substantial reason to believe Rep. John Duncan (R-TN) improperly used thousands of campaign dollars on personal expenses for himself and his family,” the Knoxville News reports.

“The expenses totaled more than $100,000 and include trips for Duncan’s family and friends… Other expenses outlined in the 57-page report include thousands of dollars for membership dues and private parties, including baby showers and bridal dinners, at the Club LeConte in Knoxville and membership dues at the Knoxville Quarterback Club.”

Judge Skewers Manafort’s Case Challenging Mueller

April 4, 2018 at 4:47 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

A federal judge tore into all of the legal arguments that a lawyer for Paul Manafort made in his long-shot civil case to convince her that special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation has run amok and should be reined in, Reuters reports.

Said Judge Amy Berman Jackson: “I don’t really understand what is left of your case.”

Petit Mulls Congressional Bid in Connecticut

April 4, 2018 at 4:40 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard Leave a Comment

State Rep. William Petit Jr. (R), whose wife and daughters were murdered in a home invasion, confirmed to the Hartford Courant that he is considering a run for Rep. Elizabeth Esty’s (D-CT) House seat.

“Petit is arguably the most high-profile of the potential contenders in the swing district, which Esty has represented since 2013.”

The Case for Membership

Some of it may be perfectly good, but most of us would rather pay for something more reliable and convenient if we’re able. And many people will pay a lot for something superior.
